Nomes Sanumá entre gritos e sussuros
Ramos,Alcida Rita;
Etnográfica , 2008,
Abstract: like the other yanomami indians, the sanumá (the northermost subgroup of this amazon language family) preserve their personal names in secrecy. but, unlike most yanomami, they suspend this secrecy when it is necessary to ?do things with names?, to paraphrase j.?l. austin. personal names, transformed into social tools, are capable of marking the public sphere with devices coming from the private realm. in this way, a few male names lose their secrecy so as to herald the emergence of new patrilineal groups with which the sanumá organize their marriage and political life. with the arrival of outsiders, foreign names made their entrance in the sanumá social lexicon, thus relieving the pressure over name secrecy. first came protestant missionaries with the davids and sarahs, then gold miners and other jungle adventurers with their regional and idisioncratic nicknames - ceará, paraíba, passar?o, etc. - greatly contributing to keep sanumá personal names away from the public ear. it would thus seem that whispering would no longer be necessary, and crying out people?s names could be done at ease. things, however, are not as they seem. to what extent sanumá naming etiquette has reacted to these changes is what i intend to scrutinize.
O PARAíSO AMEA?ADO: SABEDORIA YANOMAMI VERSUS INSENSATEZ PREDATóRIA

Antipoda. Revista de Antropología y Arqueología , 2008,
Abstract: the upper orinoco region incensed many a european imagination, including columbus' who bewildered by the sight of its majestic mouth took the orinoco as one of the rivers of the earthly paradise. it is, in fact, yanomami country which straddles the brazil-venezuela border. it displays both the grandiosity of the amazon and the wise use the indians make of it. by focusing on the networks of trails opened up in the immense forest by unbroken generations, i want to emphatically deny that the amazon is a "demographic void," thus frmly belying the insidious fallacy that the emptiness of amazonia places a threat to national security, a danger that should be averted with intensive colonization and economic projects. this recurrent fallacy persistently disqualifes the obvious and important presence of indigenous peoples.

Palabras clave: Pluralismo, homogeneidad social, indigenismo, etnicidades nacionales DILEMMAS OF BRAZILIAN PLURALISM Abstract The Brazilian nation has been constructed on the basis of two main premises: one is its territorial and linguistic unity; the other is its purported social homogeneity resulting from the combination of the three “races” – Indians, Blacks, and Europeans. While the first premise, especially regarding territoriality, has been empirically sustained, the second is a clearly mystifying ideology. This paper calls attention to the fictional character of homogeneity and focuses on indigenism to analyze the reasons why pluralism continues to be denied as a social reality in Brazil. Key Words: Pluralism, social homogeneity, indigenism, national ethnicity

Nomes Sanumá entre gritos e sussuros Sanumá names between cries and whispers

Like the other Yanomami Indians, the Sanumá (the northermost subgroup of this Amazon language family) preserve their personal names in secrecy.

Gastrointestinal presentation of disseminated histoplasmosiin a transplant recipient

Portuguese Journal of Nephrology & Hypertension , 2012,
Abstract: histoplasmosis is a clinically relevant fungal infection in immunosuppressed patients, in whom it may present as a serious disease. we describe the case of a renal transplant recipient who presented with malaise, dry cough, severe weight loss, abdominal pain and watery diarrhoea. the laboratory workup revealed anaemia and elevated c reactive protein. chest x-ray showed bilateral reticulonodular infiltrates, and computed tomography scan of the chest and abdomen revealed diffuse thickening of the inter- and intralobular septs, suggestive of lymphangitic infiltration. the abdomen had multiple lymphadenopathies along the mesenteric vessels. endoscopic evaluation disclosed disseminated ulcers throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract, and biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of histoplasmosis. despite adequate treatment with liposomal amphotericin b, the patient had a fatal outcome. we describe this case because of the rarity of gastrointestinal presentation in the context of disseminated histoplasmosis, and we also speculate about the transmission through the allograft. it highlights the importance of considering this once geographically limited disease in challenging cases, even in non-endemic areas
