Revista Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-72992004000200014
Abstract: obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (osas) in childhood is becoming more important and its incidence is increasing. this increase mainly reflects as an improve in diagnosis, both because of better understanding and recognition of the symptoms the syndrome causes in children, and because of better diagnostic complementary exams. in this article, the symptoms and the characteristics of osas related to childhood are reviewed. in addition, the causes and the consequences of osas on childhood development are discussed, as well as the current treatment strategies and their prognoses.
Descompress?o endoscópica orbitária na oftalmopatia de Graves
Lima, Wilma Terezinha Anselmo;Perches, Mateus;Valera, Fabiana Cardoso Pereira;Demarco, Ricardo Cassiano;
Revista Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-72992006000200022
Abstract: graves? disease may lead to exophthalmos that is cosmetically unacceptable or causes visual loss. this has been managed surgically by external orbital decompression. however, a new minimally invasive endoscopic orbital decompression technique is now possible, with resection of the medial and posterior portion of the orbital limits requiring no cutaneous or gingival incisions. this technique produces decompression comparable to that obtained by external techniques. endoscopic orbital decompression is a safe and effective procedure for the treatment of thyroid orbitopathy.

A single dose of live-attenuated 638 Vibrio cholerae oral vaccine is safe and immunogenic in adult volunteers in Mozambique

Abstract: A placebo-controlled randomized, double-blind, clinical trial was carried out to assess the safety, reactogenicity,and immunogenicity of the lyophilized vaccine candidate against cholera derived from the live attenuated 638 Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor Ogawa strain. One hundred and twenty presumably healthy female and male adultvolunteers aged between 18 and 50 years were included. They were from Maputo, Mozambique a cholera endemic area, where, in addition, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seroprevalence is from 20 to 30%. A dose of 2 x 109 colony forming units (CFU) was given to 80 subjects and other 40 received only vaccine lyoprotectors as a placebo control. Out-patient follow-up of adverse events was carried out during the following 30 days after vaccination.The immune response was evaluated by the estimation of seroconversion rate and the geometric mean titer (GMT) of vibriocidal antibodies in the sera from volunteers that was collected previously, and at days 14 and 21 after immunization. No serious adverse events were reported. The adverse events found in the vaccine group were similar to those of the placebo groups. They were independent from the detection of antibodies againstHIV-1, HIV-2, hepatitis (H) A; HC and hepatitis B surface antigen. The presence of helminthes did not modify the incidence of adverse events. The 638 vaccine strain was isolated in 37 (46.25%) vaccinated volunteer’s feces. The peak of the GMT of vibriocidal antibodies in the vaccine group was 9056 versus 39 in the placebo group at 14 days with a total seroconversion of 97.4% at 21 days. The 638 vaccine candidate is safe and immunogenic in a choleraendemic region.
THE DESCRIPTIVE STUDY OF PREPROCESSING FROM WEB USAGE MINING
MANISHA VALERA
Indian Streams Research Journal , 2012,
Abstract: Now a day World Wide Web become very popular and collaborative for transferring of information. The web is huge, diverse and active and thus increases the scalability, multimedia data and temporal matters. The several kinds of data have to be organized in a manner that they can be accessed by several users effectively and efficiently. So the usage of data mining methods and knowledge discovery on the web is now on the spotlight of a boosting number of researchers. Web mining is the extraction of exciting and constructive facts and inherent information from artifacts or actions related to the WWW. Web usage mining is a kind of data mining method that can be useful in recommending the web usage patterns with the help of users' session and behavior. Web usage mining includes three process, namely, preprocessing, pattern discovery and pattern analysis. After the completion of these three phases the user can find the required usage patterns and use this information for the specific needs. Web usage mining requires data abstraction for pattern discovery. This data abstraction is achieved through data preprocessing. In this paper we survey about the data preprocessing activities like data cleaning, user identification, session identification, path completion

Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: The author finds geodesics, shortest arcs, cut locus, and conjugate sets for left-invariant sub-Riemannian metric on the Lie group $SO_0(2,1)$ under the condition that the metric is right-invariant relative to the Lie subgroup $SO(2)\subset SO_0(2,1)$.

Abstract: dacryocystorhinostomy (dcr) is a procedure used to create a lachrymal drainage pathway into the nasal cavity in order to reestablish the permanent drainage of a previously obstructed excretory system. aim: to report our results obtained with endoscopic dcr technique, describing its advantages and disadvantages study design: historic cohort. material and method: we retrospectively analyzed thirty-two dacryocystorhinostomies performed at the otorhinolaryngology discipline from march 2002 to january 2004 on patients with post-lachrymal sac obstruction confirmed by dacryocystorhinography (dcg). in all cases, the patients were submitted to probing with crawford probe. results: surgery was bilateral in ten of the twenty-two analyzed patients, totaling thirty-two procedures, twenty-nine of which were primary surgeries and three revision procedures after unsuccessful external dcr. our success rate was 79.12%. conclusions: endoscopic dcr proved to be a safe and low morbidity technique, which also avoids facial scars and maintains the mechanism of the lachrymal pump, with results similar to those obtained with external dcr.

Abstract: there is still controversy on which is the best method to collect the secretion directly from the middle meatus or maxillary sinus in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. aim: to evaluate the prevalence of bacteria in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and compare the suction trap collector to direct aspiration attached to a syringe for the microbiological analysis of these secretions. materials and methods: prospective study involving 31 patients who underwent endoscopically guided maxillary secretion aspiration by two different methods (aspiration with the collector tube "suction trap" and aspiration with the use of a catheter connected to a syringe), to determine the microbiological diagnosis and to compare the two methods used. results: microorganisms grew samples collected from 55% of the 31 patients. the most frequent bacteria were s. aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa and other aerobic gram-negative bacteria. the results from cultures were similar between the two methods in 71% of patients. conclusion: s. aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa and other aerobic gram-negative bacteria make up the main flora in the maxillary sinus of the patients. there was good correlation between the microbiological results obtained by using a catheter attached to a syringe and the "suction trap" nasal collector.
