El ultrasonido en algunas afecciones del tiroides Use of ultrasonography in some thyroid diseases
Ultrasonography is the first diagnostic modality through imaging that is used in the study of thyroid diseases, and some of the advantages include being a cheap, non-invasive method and a guide for biopsy. Certain ultrasonographic features are significantly more frequent in malignant than in benign nodules. With the objective of creating a standard of the ultrasonographic lesions and the correlation with malignancy, the American College of Radiology has developed the system of thyroid image data and reporting.
Mederos Curbelo,Orestes Noel; Da Costa Fernández,José Manuel; Jequín Savariego,Esther; Ramos Hernández,Ricardo Ulises;
Revista Cubana de Cirug?-a , 2010,
Abstract: this is the case of a woman aged 55 presenting with localized acute abdominal pain in right inferior quadrant of 12 hours of course, leukocytosis and peritoneal reaction. the abdominal echography findings showed a supposed epiploitis but the pain intensity and persistence determined the surgical intervention. epiploic acute appendicitis is a infrequent affection that must to be suspected in case of acute pain in inferior abdominal quadrants and imaging studies are essential for preoperative diagnosis.

This is the case of a woman aged 55 presenting with localized acute abdominal pain in right inferior quadrant of 12 hours of course, leukocytosis and peritoneal reaction. The abdominal echography findings showed a supposed epiploitis but the pain intensity and persistence determined the surgical intervention.

Our work was done on fourth grade students from a public primary school to evaluate their knowledge about certain topics considered important in the current times: Drugs and Alcohol, Child Abuse, Family Violence and Sexually Transmited Diseases. Based on data obtained we conluded that there was a serious lack of basic concepts regarding the mentioned topics and we established that the best way to explain those concepts was through workshops, which were performed on december 2009 and that allowed to clarify crucial doubts and allowed us to recognize first hand the serious deficiencies that exists in our current education system in the mentioned topics.
Effect of Gamma Irradiation and Selection with Fungus Filtrate (Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn) on the in Vitro Culture of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)  [PDF]

Abstract: The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of gamma irradiation (dose from 10 to 100 Gy) and in vitro selection with fungus filtrate as selecting agent (concentration from 20% to 100%) on the susceptibility of the common bean to Rhizoctonia solani. The best results were found with a dose of 20 Gy or a concentration of 20% of fungus filtrate applied separately. These conditions were used to evaluate the combined effect of both approaches in a second experiment. The combined effect of irradiation and then selection adversely affected growth (height and roots) and survival of the in vitro plants. It may not be necessary to combine the variation generated by irradiation with the selection technique. For future assays we propose the application of: 1) gamma radiation, thereby inducing not only mutants with pathogen resistance, but also with other agronomic traits of interest. Later in the subculture MV4 potential fungus-resistant mutants will be evaluated in the field; or 2) selection pressure using fungus filtrate during three subcultures, which may be sufficient to induce the variation necessary to obtain in vitro plants resistant to fungus.

Abstract: objetives: upper urinary tract (uut) tumors are a relatively low incidence pathology which often represents a diagnostic challenge for the urologist, because several imaging tests are usually necessary to achieve the final diagnosis. over the last years ct scan has suffered a notable development and nowadays, with the arrival of new image processing hardware and software, it is possible to detect small urothelial lesions and to perform 3-d urinary tract reconstruction and virtual endoscopic navigation. methods: between january 2004 and june 2005 we performed a total of 15 examinations in 15 patients for the study of asymptomatic hematuria of probable upper urinary tract origin. the technique included three phases to obtain images: basal phase, vascular phase and excretory phase. processing and image analysis was performed by one radiologist. results: a total of 10 tumors were diagnosed, with pathological confirmation in all cases. we did not register any complication secondary to the technique, and all patients tolerated well the exam. conclusions: the ct urography is a safe, well- tolerated, highly sensitive and efficient imaging test, very useful in the diagnosis of renal and uut pathology. it may become the only imaging test performed in the study of asymptomatic hematuria and the test of choice for the study of urological tumoral pathology.
Hernández Royero,Ricardo;
Revista Cubana de Medicina Militar , 1997,
Abstract: crudes of saponins were obtained from the small thin shell of grains of chenopodium quinoa willd (quinúa) by reflow with ethanol at 80 % v/v in order to use them as anticholesteraemia agents. the different batches of gross saponins obtained showed an average yield of 37.12 % on the basis of the total amount of small thin shell (8.03 %) and of 2.98 % on the basis of the whole number of grains. these products reacted strongly in the tests of liebermann-burchard and selivoflo, and their hemolytic potency (h50 in mg/ml) was in the run from 42.6 to 28.4. 6 samples of crudes were subjected to saponification and no significant changes were observed in the hemolytic potency of the saponified products (h50 between 37.2 and 22.7). this fact, and the fact that the total of crudes had a negative reaction in the fehling and molish's tests, suggest that the products obtained are in the form of sapogenins or other non-saponifiable derivatives.
