A estética do corpo na filosofia e na arte da Idade Média: texto e imagem The aesthetics of the body in the philosophy and art of the Middle Ages: text and image

The concept of beauty, and its consequent aesthetic enjoyment, has varied according the transformations of human societies over time. During the Middle Ages there were different conceptions, in both philosophy and art, of what the role of the body is in the hierarchy of aesthetic values. Our purpose is to present the aesthetic of the body that some medieval philosophers developed in their treatises (especially Isidore of Seville, Hildegard of Bingen, John of Salisbury, Bernard of Clairvaux and Thomas Aquinas), as well as some bodily representations of medieval images (illuminations and sculptures). We thus examine the issue in three ways: a) the body as a prison of the soul, b) the body as an instrument, and c) the body as degradation.

Abstract: This article analyses the work British Destruction of the British monk Gildas, written in the 540 years AD. We brought out the passages that the author advises the British chiefs to supplant their weaknesses and their governmental incapacities due to their vices. To Gildas this chiefs were tyrants and the main responsible for the British defeat from the invasions. We also brought out the critics that Gildas made of the clerics of his time, probably influenced by the Irish monkship. To complete the historical research we took one work of Tacito (Life of Julio Agrícola), Beda (Historical Works), Nennius (History of Britons) and The Anglo Saxon Chronicle, written in the time of the king Alfred, the Great. The article is divided in six parts: the common characteristics of the German kingdoms, the invasion of the Britain – with a brief description of the Germanic migrations and the settlement of the Angles, Saxons and Juts, the new social structures – specially the changing of the Sippe, the Christianisation of England – with the return of the paganism and the works of conversion of Augustine, and a brief biography of Gildas.

Acta Amazonica , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0044-59672007000200008
Abstract: leaf water potential is one of the most important factors affecting stomatal functioning. the aim of this study was to assess the effect of variation in diurnal irradiance and vapour pressure deficit on photosynthesis (a), stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potential (y) in carapa guianensis (aubl.). data were collected from 07:00 to 17:00 h. photosynthetic rates reached a maximum (2.5 μmol m-2 s-1) at 10:00 h, thereafter declined to a minimum of 1 μmol m-2 s-1 at 16:00 h. stomatal conductance oscillated during the day, from 0.04 mol m-2 s-1 (at midday) to 0.02.mol.m-2.s-1 at the end of the afternoon. leaf water potential was higher early in the morning (-0.3 mpa) and lower (-0.75 mpa) at mid-afternoon (14:30 -15:00 h). after reaching a minimum, y increased up to -0.64 mpa at sunset. photosynthetic rates increased linearly as a function of gs (p < 0.01). also there was a positive relationship between y and gs (p< 0.01). photosynthetic rates declined during the day after reaching a peak early in the morning, which makes clear that environmental factors that influence y greatly affect carbon assimilation of c. guianensis.
