Abstract: Our aim, in this work, were to reach a different vision about ideologics attitudes of Machado de Assis when in beginning of your literary career, as articulist, and your opinions about the national literature. We intend to demonstrate how, even in Machado, there is the manifestation of one civilizing preoccupation that give the tonus of our literature during all Brazilian nineteenth century. To reach this aim, we utilize one only article, in which are more evidents the symptoms of this attitude of esthetizing and moralizing character.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to develop new irrigated rice lines tolerant to imidazolinone herbicides. the backcross breeding procedure was used to transfer the imidazolinone tolerance allele from mutant 93as3510 to the recurrent parents 'brs 7 taim' and 'brs pelota'. individual herbicide-tolerant plants were selected in each generation, for three backcrossings (rc1 to rc3), followed by three selfing generations (rc3f1 to rc3f3). the best four rc3f3 lines for agronomic traits were genotyped with 44 microsatellite markers. the observed conversion index of the new imidazolinone-tolerant lines varied from 91.86 to 97.67%. pairwise genetic distance analysis between these lines and 22 accessions from the embrapa's rice germplasm bank clustered the new lines with their respective recurrent parents, but not with 'irga 417', which was originally used as recurrent parent to derive irga 422 cl, the only imidazolinone-tolerant irrigated rice cultivar recommended for cultivation in brazil. therefore, these lines represent new options of genetically diverse imidazolinone-tolerant rice accessions. lines cna10756 ('brs sinuelo cl') and cna10757 will be released for cultivation in the clearfield irrigated rice production system in rio grande do sul, brazil.

Abstract: Hookworm infection is considered one of the most important poverty-promoting neglected tropical diseases, infecting 576 to 740 million people worldwide, especially in the tropics and subtropics. These blood-feeding nematodes have a remarkable ability to downmodulate the host immune response, protecting themselves from elimination and minimizing severe host pathology. While several mechanisms may be involved in the immunomodulation by parasitic infection, experimental evidences have pointed toward the possible involvement of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in downregulating effector T-cell responses upon chronic infection. However, the role of Tregs cells in human hookworm infection is still poorly understood and has not been addressed yet. In the current study we observed an augmentation of circulating CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ regulatory T cells in hookworm-infected individuals compared with healthy non-infected donors. We have also demonstrated that infected individuals present higher levels of circulating Treg cells expressing CTLA-4, GITR, IL-10, TGF-β and IL-17. Moreover, we showed that hookworm crude antigen stimulation reduces the number of CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ T regulatory cells co-expressing IL-17 in infected individuals. Finally, PBMCs from infected individuals pulsed with excreted/secreted products or hookworm crude antigens presented an impaired cellular proliferation, which was partially augmented by the depletion of Treg cells. Our results suggest that Treg cells may play an important role in hookworm-induced immunosuppression, contributing to the longevity of hookworm survival in infected people.

Abstract: The metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) radiopharmaceutical, an analogue of norepinephrine, has been used to diagnose certain diseases in the cardiovascular system when radiolabeled with 123I. This radiopharmaceutical can also be used to treat tumors, such as neuroblastomas and pheochromocytomas, when radiolabeled with 131I. Its clinical use is often accompanied by a slow intravenous administration, where a significant dose of radiation can directly affect workers in nuclear medicine services. To overcome this problem, the incorporation and controlled release of radiopharmaceuticals from the matrix of mesoporous systems based on silica, such as SBA-15 and hybrid [SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)], can lead to a significant reduction in radiation doses received by workers. In the present study, silica matrices SBA-15 and hybrid [SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)] containing the radiopharmaceutical MIBG were prepared and physicochemically characterized through FTIR, SEM, and small angle X-ray diffraction techniques. The release profiles of MIBG from SBA-15 and [SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)] were studied in a simulated body fluid (SBF) to evaluate their potential application as vehicles for controlled releases. Furthermore, in vitro studies were performed to assess the cytotoxicity of matrices as compared to human lung fibroblast cells (MRC-5). The results revealed that the amount of MIBG incorporated within the studied matrices was indeed quite different, showing that only the hybrid [SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)] system allowed for a more adequate release profile of MIGB. Taking all results into consideration, it can be concluded that the hybrid matrix [SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)] can be considered a potential alternative material for the controlled release delivery of radio-pharmaceuticals.

Abstract: In the dairy cattle production of the small region of S o Jo o Del Rei (MG - Brazil) it is common to manage extensive native pastures with annual fires on low natural fertility Haplumbrept soils. The objective of this work was to evaluate the physical stability by measuring the degree of clay flocculation of a Haplumbrept soil under different management systems of extensive pastures. The evaluations were done using three types of managements: native pasture without fire; native pasture with fire, and recovered pasture. For each treatment it was selected one “sub area” of 1 hectare, located at the middle hillside with declivity between 10 and 12%, where, in the month of June 2007, 50 randomized deformed soil samples were collected/studied, in the layer of 0-10 cm to evaluate the degree of clay flocculation, pH, DpHH2O, pHKCl (1N), zero point charge (PCZ). The systems of soil management did influence the degree of clay flocculation, with the lowest values found in pasture with annual burning and recovered pasture. The recovery of pasture in this fragile soil requires care with physical and chemical soil management.

Abstract: loose anagen hair syndrome is characterized by thin and sparse hairs that can be easily extracted upon mild traction. the disorder affects predominantly children. trichogram shows at least 70% of loose anagen hairs devoid of inner and outer hair sheaths, presenting a ruffled cuticle at the proximal portion. although benign and self-limited, the disorder frequently concerns parents and should be further differentiated from telogen effluvium and trichotillomania.
Touch attention Bayesian models for robotic active haptic exploration of heterogeneous surfaces

Computer Science , 2014,
Abstract: This work contributes to the development of active haptic exploration strategies of surfaces using robotic hands in environments with an unknown structure. The architecture of the proposed approach consists two main Bayesian models, implementing the touch attention mechanisms of the system. The model pi_per perceives and discriminates different categories of materials (haptic stimulus) integrating compliance and texture features extracted from haptic sensory data. The model pi_tar actively infers the next region of the workspace that should be explored by the robotic system, integrating the task information, the permanently updated saliency and uncertainty maps extracted from the perceived haptic stimulus map, as well as, inhibition-of-return mechanisms. The experimental results demonstrate that the Bayesian model pi_per can be used to discriminate 10 different classes of materials with an average recognition rate higher than 90% . The generalization capability of the proposed models was demonstrated experimentally. The ATLAS robot, in the simulation, was able to perform the following of a discontinuity between two regions made of different materials with a divergence smaller than 1cm (30 trials). The tests were performed in scenarios with 3 different configurations of the discontinuity. The Bayesian models have demonstrated the capability to manage the uncertainty about the structure of the surfaces and sensory noise to make correct motor decisions from haptic percepts.
