Abstract: this article presents qualitative research which sought to reflect with individuals who experience psychic suffering about their daily experiences, identifying the meanings of such experiences. the study was carried out with two patients of a psychosocial care center (caps ii), in florianópolis, santa catarina, brazil. the data was collected through the implementation of rosemarie rizzo parse?s care process theory. through the data analysis, the following meanings were identified: coexisting with infancy memories; co-constitution of the psychiatric illness; the work permeating the health-illness process; transcending in health, citizenship, and quality of life, illuminated by the psychiatric care reform. thus, the "becoming human" theory, with its concepts and principles, allowed the individuals in psychic suffering to glimpse a new way of living, sharpened with the proposal of the brazilian psychiatric reform.

Abstract: this is a historical research whose objective is to historicize the nursing team and the patients at the hospital col?nia sant'ana (hcs), in the period from 1941 to 1960. five employees that worked at the hospital in the period of the study were interviewed and other documental sources were used. to analyze the data foucault's theory was used. hcs was the main pole of psychiatric care in the santa catarina. the nursing team was constituted by the nuns, "male nurses" and "watchmen". the institution received indigent, private, and health insurance covered patients, who were diagnosed with many different problems, and some who were more of a social case than anything else. the general conditions of the hospital were precarious. the studied period made possible visualize that the treatment given to the patients, as well as the work conditions offered to the workers, were distant from the ideal, and that it was part of a national policy, characterized by the creation of state macro psychiatric hospitals.
Evaluating Cultural and Technical Obstacles in School-Based ICT Programs: An Analysis of Two Case Studies  [PDF]

Creative Education (CE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2013.49B006
Abstract:

The emergence of a knowledge-based economy has been identified as a central trend in modern economies as a result of the increasingly important role of information technology and learning in economic performance. In recognition of this most governments throughout the developed world have responded with a series of policy initiatives since the late 1990’s to either introduce or significantly increase information technology provision in schools to prepare students for life in the twenty first century. Ireland, with its growing reliance on the knowledge economy sector for employment and continued economic prosperity, developed its own policy initiative for computerizing the nations’ schools known as“Schools IT 2000: A Policy Framework for the New Millennium”. It was an ambitious programme with high expectations for the integration of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) in education. This paper examines two longitudinal educational ICT projects in Ireland in the first decade of the new millennium to query how far schools have travelled along the information superhighway and to ponder how well the catalytic capabilities of ICT have become embedded in the realities of classroom life and teachers pedagogic practices, with attendant implications for Ireland’s economic development.

Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71672008000700009
Abstract: this study is a qualitative research with a socio-historic approach whose objective was to know the prejudice and stigma lived by the institutionalized patients/residents with hanseniase. to achieve this goal, three patients were intervewed who lived in a colony hospital during the research period, utilizing the oral history method. data were collected and were further analysed, utilizing the stigma referencial. the results indicated that after the entry in the institution, these patients got their family bonds broken, lost their rights as citizens, regarding the situation, they took upon a new life, in a new environment. concluding that, the nosocomial isolation for a long period of time (years of confinement and dismissal), caused the symbolic death of many patients that lived with the hope to cohabit with family and/or society.

Abstract: this article is a qualitative research with socio-historical approach which aimed at describing the history of the treatment given to psychiatric patients hospitalized in the old hospital named col?nia sant'ana, in the period between 1941 and 1960. the data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with five employees that worked at the hospital in the period, using the verbal method of history. after the analysis of the interviews using the content analysis of bardin, it was achieved the following results - the psychiatric patients hospitalized were submitted to some therapies such as: electric discharge, insulin therapy, specifics drugs, occupational therapy and family care. although many of these therapies are currently in disuse, and are criticized by diverse social segments, they were in agreement to the psychiatric practice by that time.

The Sun and stars as the primary energy input in planetary atmospheres
I. Ribas
Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1017/S1743921309992298
Abstract: Proper characterization of the host star to a planet is a key element to the understanding of its overall properties. The star has a direct impact through the modification of the structure and evolution of the planet atmosphere by being the overwhelmingly larger source of energy. The star plays a central role in shaping the structure, evolution, and even determining the mere existence of planetary atmospheres. The vast majority of the stellar flux is well understood thanks to the impressive progress made in the modeling of stellar atmospheres. At short wavelengths (X-rays to UV), however, the information is scarcer since the stellar emission does not originate in the photosphere but in the chromospheric and coronal regions, which are much less understood. The same can be said about particle emissions, with a strong impact on planetary atmospheres, because a detailed description of the time-evolution of stellar wind is still lacking. Here we review our current understanding of the flux and particle emissions of the Sun and low-mass stars and briefly address their impact in the context of planetary atmospheres.
The field brown dwarf LP 944-20 and the Castor moving group
I. Ribas
Physics , 2003, DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20030006
Abstract: A reliable age estimation for the field brown dwarf LP 944-20 is accomplished through the analysis of its kinematic properties. The space velocities of this star strongly suggest its membership in the so-called Castor moving group. LP 944-20 can be sensibly assumed to have the group's age, which is estimated to be ~320 Myr, and metal content, which is found to be roughly solar. With these new constrains and the available photometry and lithium abundance, current brown dwarf models are put to a test. Using the IR magnitudes and the lithium diagnostics, the models are able to provide a reasonable description of the brown dwarf's properties (to within a few sigma) but yield an age which is roughly 50% larger than our estimate. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.
