International Journal of Photoenergy , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/918025
Abstract: The ozonation catalyzed by iron-pillared clays was studied. The degradation of dye indigo carmine (IC) was elected as test reaction. Fe-pillared clays were synthesized by employing hydrolyzed FeCl3 solutions and bentonite. The pillared structure was verified by XRD and by XPS the oxidation state of iron in the synthesized material was established to be +2. By atomic absorption the weight percentage of iron was determined to be 16. The reaction was conducted in a laboratory scale up-flow bubble column reactor. From the studied variables the best results were obtained with a particle size of 60 microns, , ozone flow of 0.045?L/min, and catalyst concentration of 100?mg/L. IC was completely degraded and degradation rate was found to be double when using Fe-PILCS than with ozone alone. DQO reduction was also significantly higher with catalyzed than with noncatalyzed ozonation. 1. Introduction A vast amount of water is employed by the textile industry. Because of the dyeing process, the produced wastewater contains strong color and this is reflected as well in a high chemical oxygen demand (COD). It has been estimated that 1–15% of the dye is lost during dyeing and finishing processes and is released into wastewater [1, 2]. Even small quantities (<0.005?mg?L?1) of dyes in water are unacceptable since the discharge of effluents containing reactive dyes into the environment can interfere with transmission of sunlight into flowing liquid [3]. This causes perturbations in aquatic life and the food web [4]. Thus, an effective and economical technique for removing dyes from textile wastewaters is needed [5]. In this sense, several conventional methods for treating dye effluents have been studied, such as photodegradation [6], adsorption [7], filtration [8], coagulation [9], and biological treatments [10]. However, due to the stability of the molecules of dyes some of these methods are not completely effective and/or viable. In recent years, water treatment based on the chemical oxidation of organic compounds by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) like ozonation has drawn attention. Ozonation, which is effective, versatile, and environmentally sound, has been tested as a good method for color removal [11]. Ozone is a strong oxidant and reacts rapidly with most of organic compounds [12]. It oxidizes organic pollutants via two pathways: direct oxidation with ozone molecules and/or the generation of free-radical intermediates, such as the radical, which is a powerful, effective, and nonselective oxidizing agent [13, 14]. However, the degree and rate of oxidation by
Assessing Bias: The Qualitative in the Quantitative, Darfuri War Fatalities and the Morality of War  [PDF]
Stephen Reyna
Sociology Mind (SM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/sm.2011.13013
Abstract: This paper formulates a strategy for assessing bias, and applies it to quantitative assessments of the disaster of war in Darfur [Sudan]. In so doing it argues for qualitative investigations of quantitative analyses. The strategy examines epistemic and political regimes with the goal of revealing the sources, the directions, and the forces of bias. Examples of bias are discussed to illustrate the strategy including, among others, the draw-a-person IQ test, questions about how old you are or whether you can bear children in Chad, and the US army’s Human Terrain System. Considerable attention is paid to US governmental biasing of its claims of war fatalities and genocide in Darfur. This biasing is shown to involve cherry picking, symbolic violence, and high-channel regimes of bias. It is shown how the bias assessment strategy may be of use in evaluating moral claims.

Neutrinos at 1%: a reactor based measurement of theta13
Reyna, David;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332004000700021
Abstract: past studies of neutrinos and the recent results on neutrino mixing have opened up many new possibilities as well as the understanding that neutrino mixing is very different from the better known quark mixing. the last remaining unmeasured component of the neutrino mixing matrix (ue3) also provides a window to understanding neutrino matter effects, the mass hierarchy, and the possibility of measuring leptonic cp violation. a discussion of the benefits and difficulties of pursuing such a measurement with reactor neutrinos will be presented. in addition, possible sites for such an experiment will be discussed, including a location in brazil.

Abstract: obesity is a worldwide pandemic and children are a vulnerable group. in america, it was estimated that in 2010, 15.2% of 18 year-old children could suffer from this. obesity in children and teenagers has a negative impact on health and on the load of diseases at this stage of life, and later on in adulthood, having a negative impact on the economy of a country due to the rise of risks of chronic diseases, health expenses and indirect costs as a result of the disease. peru is going through an epidemiological transition, with unsolved malnutrition problems and high child obesity rates (10% of children under five), thus being one of the countries with a higher increase of child obesity in recent years in latin america. childhood and adolescence are considered critical periods because eating habits and physical activity start at this point; and because most obese children and teenagers will maintain those habits until they reach adulthood. for this reason, it is essential to seek strategies and interventions that prevent overweight and obesity among children and teenagers in order to improve the health conditions of a country

González,Natividad M.;
La zaranda de ideas , 2011,
Abstract: huasamayo river basin (tilcara department, jujuy province) holds an important number of prehispanic structures for agriculture. this vast area (of 15000 ha) was approached through satellite images and field work, which allowed to obtain an idea of the characteristiques of agriculture land and the main irrigation sources.the formal and functional diversity of the agriculture structures arose, and so the location and the environmental conditions they face or make use of. hillsides with arrangements for unirrigated crops, water retention structures associated with transitory habitation and pictography, fields with important amount of labor and other of expeditious facture were identified. here we sustain that the use of the basin at prehispanic period was to multiply the opportunities for successful crops, since the internal diversity was privileged and the fields offered likewise the possibility of diversification at a wider territorial strategy.

BiD : Textos Universitaris de Biblioteconomia i Documentació , 2010,
This paper analyses the implementation of Act 19/23 November 2006 on the library system in the Balearic Islands. The background of the Balearic archipelago is presented, as well as the development of the libraries and the responsibilities for library matters that have been assumed by the different levels of government, such as the Government of the Balearic Islands and the Island Councils. In addition, the paper reviews the process of creating the library system and the legislative process that concluded with the approval of Act 19/23 November 2006. Finally, we assess the implementation of and compliance with each of the obligations in the Act by the various levels of government. A certain general delay in implementation was found, despite the fact that considerable progress has been made.
