Dynamics, Patterns and Causes of Fires in Northwestern Amazonia

Abstract: According to recent studies, two widespread droughts occurred in the Amazon basin, one during 2005 and one during 2010. The drought increased the prevalence of climate-driven fires over most of the basin. Given the importance of human-atmosphere-vegetation interactions in tropical rainforests, these events have generated concerns over the vulnerability of this area to climate change. This paper focuses on one of the wettest areas of the basin, Northwestern Amazonia, where the interactions between the climate and fires are much weaker and where little is known about the anthropogenic drivers of fires. We have assessed the response of fires to climate over a ten-year period, and analysed the socio-economic and demographic determinants of fire occurrence. The patterns of fires and climate and their linkages in Northwestern Amazonia differ from the enhanced fire response to climate variation observed in the rest of Amazonia. The highest number of recorded fires in Northwestern Amazonia occurred in 2004 and 2007, and this did not coincide with the periods of extreme drought experienced in Amazonia in 2005 and 2010. Rather, during those years, Northwestern Amazonia experienced a relatively small numbers of fire hotspots. We have shown that fire occurrence correlated well with deforestation and was determined by anthropogenic drivers, mainly small-scale agriculture, cattle ranching (i.e., pastures) and active agricultural frontiers (including illegal crops). Thus, the particular climatic conditions for air convergence and rainfall created by proximity to the Andes, coupled with the presence of one of the most active colonisation fronts in the region, make this region differently affected by the general drought-induced fire patterns experienced by the rest of the Amazon. Moreover, the results suggest that, even in this wet region, humans are able to modify the frequency of fires and impact these historically well preserved forests.

Abstract: throughout costa rican history, legal medicine has contributed providing an important support to the administration of justice, especially in all judicial activities in which it is required, and to the investigator and public ministry in the elucidating of real truth in a specific case. to understand better the forensic doctor’s contribution in a judicial court, we extract a historic synopsis in an international and national realm, followed by the first medical legal report and the development that this discipline has achieved in costa rica. we will also handle the concept and duties of the forensic doctor as an expert, the quality of expertise from the viewpoint concerning fundamental rights of the examined and the forensic duality between the forensic doctor’s ethics and his/her personality.
Reestablecimiento de los géneros Frankliniella, Exophtalmothrips y Bolbothrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

Abstract: four new species are described in frankliniella genus frankliniella marinae sp. n., moundi sp. n., sandovalensis sp. n. and orlandoi sp. n. the later synonyms of frankliniella (exophtalmothrips and bolbothrips) are discussed upon phylogenetical criteria, these criteria support the redescription of these genera because they are independent evolutionary lineages. the three genera are redescribed and resurrected exophtalmothrips and bolbothrips following the actual phylogenetics of the generic group. the genus exophtalmothrips was a little genus with only three species, some studies on mexico fauna, and the analysis of the species of frankliniella from costa rica described in the last years increase the number of species for this genus. bolbothrips is considered a monospecific genus with the single species aztecus misidentified as frankliniella aztecus by some writers.

Abstract: the phylogeny of the species groups of frankliniella and the position of exophtalmothirps and bolbothrips are discussed with reference to recent literature and analysis with the cladistic software paup 3.0 in its heuristic option, the matrix has 24 taxa and 25 characteristics for each; 1) the intonsa group is not a well defined taxon and may include groups of species, but there are no good morphological traits for its recognition, 2) the pulchella and cephalica groups are consistent monophyletic groups of species, 3) the minuta group is monophyletic with a few morphological constraints, 4) exophtalmothrips and bolbothrips seem to be segregated, and not synonymous of frankliniella.

Throughout Costa Rican history, Legal Medicine has contributed providing an important support to the Administration of Justice, especially in all judicial activities in which it is required, and to the Investigator and Public Ministry in the elucidating of real truth in a specific case. Abstract: in this paper we discuss about the utility of the species concept as real definition, particularly the mayr concept. we propose a method for the logical separation of taxa based in the statements of the logical mathematics and the application of the sets theory to the concepts in systematic. we attempt to provide an objective methodology for the interpretation of natural groups in biology including the species as a basic group in evolution. we introduce the concept of the hypothetical ancestor as a mathematical possibility derived from the use of matrix calculations for non square matrix
