The Effects of Isosorbide Dinitrate on in Vitro Proliferation of WEHI-164 Cells and Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells

Abstract: Background: Isosorbide dinitrate has been broadly used in the treatment of various ischemic heart diseases. Isosorbide is a nitric oxide donor which increases blood flow to tumors through vasodilatation and consequently accelerates the access of chemo-drugs to them. Furthermore, this drug has inhibitory effects on angiogenesis, tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. Moreover, its ant-inflammatory effects have also been reported. In the present study we evaluated the effects of isosorbide on the proliferative activity of fibrosarcoma WEHI-164 cell line and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Methods: WEHI-164 fibrosarcoma cells and human PBMCs were cultured in complete Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) 1640 medium with 10% fetal bovine serum and 2×104 cells/mL for WEHI-164 and 2×105 cells/mL for PBMCs. The cells were then incubated at the exponential growth phase with different concentrations of isosorbide (4×10-6-1.6×10-3 M) for 24, 48 and 72 hours. Subsequently, isosorbide effects on proliferation of the cells were evaluated by trypan blue dye exclusion (TB) test and MTT assay. Statistical comparisons between groups were made by analysis of variance. Results: The proliferative activity of WEHI-164 fibrosarcoma cells and human PBMCs treated with different concentrations of isosorbide, did not show any significant difference with untreated control cells. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that isosorbide neither had any significant effects on the proliferative activity of fibrosarcoma WEHI-164 cells nor on human PBMCs. Our findings suggest that anti-tumoral effects of isosorbide reported by other investigators may be mediated through non-cytotoxic mechanisms.

Abstract:

This study aims to assess and to evaluate band ratios, brovey and HSV (Hue-Saturation-Value) techniques for discrimination and mapping the basement rock units exposed at Wadi Bulghah area, Saudi Arabia using multispectral Landsat ETM+ and SPOT-5 panchromatic data. FieldSpec instrument is utilized to collect the spectral data of diorite, marble, gossan and volcanics, the main rock units exposed at the study area. Spectral profile of diorite exhibits very distinguished absorption features around 2.20 μm and 2.35 μm wavelength regions. These absorption features lead to lowering the band ratio values within the band-7 wavelength region. Diorite intrusions appear to have grey and dark grey image signatures on 7/3 and 7/2 band ratio images respectively. On the false color composite ratio image (7/3:R; 7/2:G and 5/2:B), diorite, marble, gossan and volcanics have very dark brown, dark blue, white and yellowish brown image signatures respectively. Image fusion between previously mentioned FCC ratio image and high spatial resolution (5 meters) SPOT-5 panchromatic image is carried out by using brovey and HSV transformation

Attempt at the determination of aluminum nitrate LD50 and the study of its neurotoxicological effect in Wistar rat

Abstract: Values of oral lethal dose of aluminum (Al) nitrate are extremely different and rare in the literature. The study is an attempt to determine the oral LD50 of aluminum nitrate in the Wistar rats and to measure the effect of the high doses of this aluminum compound on rats’ different organs, on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and on acetylcholine (ACh) levels in the hippocampus. Four groups of male Wistar rats are used (n = 28). The treated groups receive three doses of aluminum nitrate (Al1 = 2,500 mg/kg, Al2 = 3,500 mg/kg, and Al3 = 4,500 mg/kg) once by gavage, while control rats receive tap water. All rats are examined twice daily for mortality and impairment during the 2-week experiment. The bodyweight (BW) is measured at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. Dissection is realized for each dyed rat and the dosage of AChE activity and ACh levels isrealized at the end of the experiment by colorimetric method. The obtained results show that the higher dose (Al3) kills 30% of the rats under study and causes spleens’ dark discoloration in the dyed rats. Both Al2 and Al3decrease significantly the spleen weight (p < 0.01) and AChE activity (p < 0.01), but increase significantly the ACh levels (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively), in hippocampus of rats. Even if the lethal dose of aluminum nitrate is not reached, the effect of the high acute doses on viscera and cholinergic system is demonstrated.

Abstract: One of the main environmental pollutants is heavy metals. Due to extensive usage in industry, these metals enter biological cycle rapidly and contaminated water and soil resources rapidly. In this work, lead, copper, zinc and chromium of Bandar Abbas wastewater are examined. For this research, nine stations were set for measurement in urban level in Bandar Abbas and sampling of aforesaid metals was performed in fall and winter 2006 in these stations. After extraction and preparation operations using APDC-MIBK, samples were measured using flame atomic absorption system. According to results, concentrate of studied metals was lower than allowable standard value set by Iran environmental protection organization for agricultural purposes and sewage to ground level waters. In addition, efficiency of Bandar Abbas wastewater treatment plant to remove these metals is 40% - 70% from which highest removal is for zinc as much as 71.1% and lowest level is for copper as much as 40.5%. However, copper level was higher than allowable level for agricultural purposes in spring and summer (0.21 mg/L and 0.23 mg/L, respectively) and lower in fall and winter (0.103 mg/L and 0.098 mg/L, respectively). Furthermore, changes in concentration of metals in these stations in various seasons were measured and analyzed using one-way variance analysis and simultaneous effects of time and place on measured variables were analyzed using two-way variance analysis.

Abstract: The relation between Maghribi cities and their hinterland has yet to be explored in depth. Insufficient archives and the lack of archaeological approaches are slowing down the understanding of the various manifestations of this issue. Without being aware of the economic, social, and cultural phenomena of the countryside, it is not yet possible to ask fundamental historical questions. A theoretical and historical contextualization shows diverse cases and complex relations that are not unilateral between Islamic cities and their hinterland. In other words, one cannot reach reliable conclusions concerning global or regional history without putting together, across centuries, exploitative relations along with interdependency within a division of labor and resources that link the city with its environment. Marketing agricultural produces and products in the city, the natural function of an outlet for rural population, the function of a judicial and administrative center, and the function of a locus for acculturation of multiple ethnic groups, are aspects less conflictual of these relations that should be included in discussion, in order to recapture them at the stage of a synthesis.

Abstract: Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$. Under some assumptions, we prove that there exists a positive function $\varphi$ solution of the following Yamabe type equation \Delta \varphi+ h\varphi= \tilde h \varphi^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}} where $h\in L^p(M)$, $p>n/2$ and $\tilde h\in \mathbb R$. We give the regularity of $\varphi$ with respect to the value of $p$. Finally, we consider the results in geometry when $g$ is a singular Riemannian metric and $h=\frac{n-2}{4(n-1)}R_g$, where $R_g$ is the scalar curvature of $g$.
