Abstract: investigation results are of major interest for both the investigator and the reader, this is the reason why their validity is important. while evaluating if a result is valid, we should keep in mind that this can be affected by the random error and by the systematic error. the bias is a systematic deviation (error) of the truth and can appear in any moment of the investigation. many types of bias exist, some particular to each design and others common to many designs. it is of utmost importance to be able to recognize and then prevent them during the design phase or control them during the analysis in the case of the investigator or in the case of an interested reader to recognize them in order to estimate if the results are valid or not. we review the more common biases in analytical studies.

Abstract: the question of investigation in most cases cannot be answered with all investigation designs, that is, each question of investigation should be answered with the most appropriate design.bwhen a question of investigation seeks to establish causality, the best model to establish this relation is the clinical trial but sometimes because of ethical or methodological implications this cannot be used and we should resort to observational models. among the observational studies the best one to establish causality and measure risks is the cohort study. the cohort study allows the comparison of two groups of patients free of illness, exposed and non exposed to a particular risk factor, to observe after a period of time which of these two groups presents the expected outcome.

Introduction: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has acquired an important role in the context of mental health care. Objective: To describe the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in patients with bipolar affective disorder (BD), examining the impact this kind of medicine can have on the early diagnosis of the illness and on the adherence to treatment. Method: A structured, anonymous, and self-administered survey was conducted among 100 adult patients affected by Bipolar Disorder in Colombia, between May 2008 and May 2009. Results: We obtained data on 100 subjects, 66 women and 34 men, with a mean age of 45.5 years (SD 14.9 years). 29.3% reported that from the onset of symptoms until the diagnosis of BD by a psychiatrist more than 5 years had passed; 31.6% confirmed the use of CAM as primary health care. Consultations with priests and attending healing masses were the most commonly used practices, along with homeopathic medicine, b

Revista Facultad Nacional de Agronomía, Medellín , 2012,
Abstract: Resumen. It was evaluated the response of alder (Alnus acuminata Kunth) to the dual inoculation of strains of Frankia spp. and endomycorrhizal fungi with two levels of boron (B) (0.3 and 0.6 mg kg-1 soil) and the application of nitrogen (N) (40 kg ha-1), phosphorus (P) (30 mg kg-1 soil) and a control without inoculation or chemical elements. The experimental design was completely randomized; it was composed kg-1of 41 treatments and 20 replications. The statistical analysis consisted of a Principal Component Analysis using a Multibiplot software. The response variables were: dry-aboveground biomass and the content of N, P, calcium (Ca) and ashes. Results indicated that P and N treatments and the wild strains of Frankia spp. (UdeA902, UdeA904 and CUNMS502) combined with the mycorrhizal fungi (UdeA1905 and Glomus fistulosum) respectively, promoted the yield and the N content of alder. The application of B improved the yield of alder, although in some cases it was affected negatively. Nevertheless, the B promoted the response of some inoculations, especially where G. fistulosum was present, even when

Abstract: In the Neotropics, almost every species of the stream-dwelling harlequin toads (genus Atelopus) have experienced catastrophic declines. The persistence of lowland species of Atelopus could be explained by the lower growth rate of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) at temperatures above 25°C. We tested the complementary hypothesis that the toads' skin bacterial microbiota acts as a protective barrier against the pathogen, perhaps delaying or impeding the symptomatic phase of chytridiomycosis. We isolated 148 cultivable bacterial strains from three lowland Atelopus species and quantified the anti-Bd activity through antagonism assays. Twenty-six percent (38 strains representing 12 species) of the bacteria inhibited Bd growth and just two of them were shared among the toad species sampled in different localities. Interestingly, the strongest anti-Bd activity was measured in bacteria isolated from A. elegans, the only species that tested positive for the pathogen. The cutaneous bacterial microbiota is thus likely a fitness-enhancing trait that may (adaptation) or not (exaptation) have appeared because of natural selection mediated by chytridiomycosis. Our findings reveal bacterial strains for development of local probiotic treatments against chytridiomycosis and also shed light on the mechanisms behind the frog-bacteria-pathogen interaction.
