Thinking about Physicalism  [PDF]

Abstract: Physicalism, if it is to be a significant thesis, should differentiate itself from key metaphysical contenders which endorse the existence of platonic entities, emergent properties, Cartesian souls, angels, and God. Physicalism can never be true in worlds where things of these kinds exist. David Papineau, David Spurrett, and Barbara Montero have recently developed and defended two influential conceptions of physicalism. One is derived from a conception of the physical as the non-mentally-and-non-biologically identifiable. The other is derived from a conception of the physical as the non-sui-generis-mental. The paper looks at the resources available to those conceptions, but argues that each is insufficient to yield a conception of physicalism that differentiates it from key anti-physicalist positions. According to these conceptions, if we lived in a world full of things that clearly cannot be physical, we would still live in a physical world. Thus, such conceptions of physicalism are of little theoretical interest.
Two Myths of Psychophysical Reductionism  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper focuses on two prominent arguments claiming that physicalism entails reductionism. One is Kim’s causal exclusion argument (CEA), and the other is Papineau’s causal argument. The paper argues that Kim’s CEA is not logically valid and that it is driven by two implausible justifications. One is “Edward’s dictum”, which is alien to non-reductive physicalism and should be rejected. The other is by endorsement of Papineau’s conception of the physical, immanent in Papineau’s causal argument. This argument only arrives at the physical property-property identities by using a conception of the physical that licenses anything to be reductively physical, including putative core anti-physical entities; thus, leaving Papineau’s causal argument and Kim’s CEA without a reductive physicalist conclusion of philosophical interest.
Democratic Freedom of Expression  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper suggests the democratic direction in which the right of freedom of expression should be conceived and applied. In the first two sections it suggests some counter-examples to, and diagnoses of, the libertarian and liberal conceptions of freedom of expression, taking Scanlon (1972) and Scanlon (1979), respectively, to be their chief proponents. The paper suggests that these conceptions cannot take into account clear examples, like fraudulent propaganda, which should not be legal. The democratic conception takes it to heart that the pillars upon which the right of freedom of expression is founded are individual and collective autonomy, the right to know facts of public interest and information necessary for effective democratic control of government. The paper suggests that in a time when private powers seriously threaten these pillars, it is correct for the government to step in to provide the framework in which genuine discussion geared toward fulfilling the objectives of these pillars can take place.

Abstract: application of a methodology to determine acute toxicity and toxic charge of the six effluents of ecopetrol's production field la cira-lnfantas, as well as to assess water quality of receptor streams (la cira and reposo), through toxicity test with three native organisms from the region: an algae (scenedesmus subspicatus), a macrophite (lemna aequinoctialis) a cladoceran (moinodaphnia macleayi) and daphnia pu/ex as the reference organism. the toxic potential of the effluents, by conducting additional bioassays with (bac+2 y naci), was also determined since high concentrations of (ba+2 and cl-;) are present in the effluents. all tested organisms showed sensitivity to the reference toxicant (k2cr2o7), and met international criteria fortheir use as bioindicators in ecotoxicology studies. the response of the bioindicators to the effluents depended on each organism; however effluents 2 and 3, the more highly contaminated, presented the highest toxicities.

Abstract: contamination indexes (ico) for characterization of natural water bodies and industrial discharges have been formulated in previous works by ramirez, et al, 1 997. in this work, complementary indexes not correlated with other icos previously developed are established thus resulting in a complementary tool to be applied in the interpretation and characterization on continental surface water bodies. first, a ph index (icoph) is obtained to determine ph incidence on water quality interpretation. a temperature index (icotem) is also obtained to evaluate effluent incidence on receiving water bodies. icotem is based on temperature difference of the wastewater discharge and the water body. finally, indexes for the evaluation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons are also developed based on data collected on sediments and fish tissue samples. these hydrocarbon compounds are highly viable to accumulate and produce longterm detrimental effects on living organisms. these latter indexes have been developed based on data of nearly 1 30 samples collected during monitoring campaigns in streams and water bodies affected by discharges of the petroleum industry or by accidental spills of crude oil or hydrocarbon by-products in colombian streams; it is also possible that anthropic influence other than petroleum discharges might be affecting the streams included in the monitoring campaigns.

Abstract: Se utilizó una metodología para determinar la toxicidad aguda y carga tóxica de los seis efluentes del campo de producción La Cira-Infantas, perteneciente a la Gerencia Centro Oriente (Ecopetrol -GCO). Además, se valoró la calidad del agua de los cuerpos receptores (ca o La Cira y ca o Reposo), por medio de pruebas de toxicidad con tres organismos autóctonos de la región: el alga Scenedesmus subspicatus, la macrófita Lemna aequinoctialis y el cladocero Moinodaphnia macleayi. Como organismo de referencia, por su amplia utilización internacional, se empleó Dap/in/a pu/ex. Se buscó determinar el potencial tóxico de los efluentes (BaC+2 y NaCI) por medio de bioensayos adicionales, pues la concentración de estos iones (Ba+2 y Cl-) sobrepasan los límites permisibles. Los organismos presentaron sensibilidad al tóxico de referencia (K2Cr2O7), cumpliendo con las exigencias dadas por los protocolos internacionales para ser utilizados como bioindicadores en estudios ecotoxicológicos. La respuesta de los bioindicadores a los efluentes dependió de cada organismo. Sin embargo, las estaciones 2 y 3 presentaron mayor toxicidad y, a su vez, son las que vierten las mayores cargas tóxicas a los cuerpos receptores. Abstract: Como complemento a un desarrollo previo, publicado por Ramírez et al., 1997, y gracias a los análisis de información recopilada en muestreos de cuerpos de aguas, se formulan nuevos índices de contaminación (ICO) para la caracterización de aguas naturales y vertimientos, todos ellos independientes de otros ICO definidos con anterioridad y que brindan información complementaria sobre la calidad de las aguas. Se desarrolla un índice para el pH (ICOpH), que resulta complementario con aquellos durante la caracterización de aguas dulces naturales. Adicionalmente, se presenta un índice para la temperatura (ICOTEM), desarrollado para la evaluación de vertimientos y se fundamenta en la diferencia de temperatura entre el vertimiento y el cuerpo receptor. Por último, se formulan índices de contaminación para hidrocarburos aromáticos y alifáticos, componentes altamente susceptibles a su acumulación en organismos vivos. Estos índices se han desarrollado basados en aproximadamente 130 mediciones realizadas en muestras de tejidos de peces y en sedimentos, en desarrollo de monitoreos en cuerpos de agua que han sido afectados en grado diferente por la industria petrolera, así como de otras actividades antrópicas. Decoherence induced by an ordered environment

Abstract: This Letter deals with the time evolution of a qubit weakly coupled to a reservoir which has a symmetry broken state with long range order at finite temperatures. In particular, we model the ordered reservoir by a standard BCS superconductor with s-wave pairing. We study the reduced density matrix of a qubit using both the time-convolutionless and Nakajima-Zwanzig approximations. We study different kinds of couplings between the qubit and the superconducting bath. We find that ordering in the superconducting bath generically leads to an unfavorable non- Markovian faster-than-exponential decay of the qubit coherence. On the other hand, a coupling of the qubit to the non-ordered sector of the bath can result in a Markovian decoherence of the qubit with a drastic reduction of the decoherence rate. Since these behaviors are endemic to the ordered phase, qubits can serve as useful probes of continuous phase transitions in their environment. We also briefly discuss the validity of our main result, faster than exponential decay of the qubit coherences, for a qubit coupled to a generic ordered bath with a spontaneously broken continuous symmetry at finite temperatures.
Heat Current Characteristics in Nanojunctions with Superconducting Leads

Abstract: As a fundamental requisite for thermotronics, controlling heat flow has been a longstanding quest in solid state physics. Recently, there has been a lot of interest in nanoscale hybrid systems as possible candidates for thermal devices. In this context, we study the heat current in the simplest hybrid device of a two level system weakly coupled to two heat baths. We use the reduced density matrix approach together with a simple Born-Markov approximation to calculate the heat current in the steady state. We consider different kinds of reservoirs and show that the nature of the reservoir plays a very important role in determining the thermal characteristics of the device. In particular, we investigate the effectiveness of a conventional superconductor as a reservoir with regard to manipulating the heat current. In the emergent temperature characteristics, we find that superconductivity in the reservoirs leads to enhanced thermal currents and that the superconducting phase transition is clearly visible in the heat current. We observe negative differential thermal conductance and a pronounced rectification of the heat current, making this a good building block for a quantum thermal diode.
