Abstract: The objective of the study was to analyze the impact of 12 weeks of resistance training (RT) on physical functional fitness in elderly women. Fifty-one elderly women (66.1±4.4 years), apparently healthy, insufficiently active, and without prior experience in RT were randomly assigned into two groups: Training Group (TG = 24) and Control Group (CG = 27). The TG was submitted to a standardized RT program composed of eight exercises, performed in two sets of 10 to 15 repetitions, three times a week, and the CG was submitted to a 12 week stretching exercise program composed by two sessions per week of 30 minutes each. Their physical and functional fitness level was analyzed before and after the intervention period by motor testing to assess Right and Left Upper Limb Endurance (RULE, LULE), Lower Limb Endurance (LLE), Flexibility (FLEX), Manual Skills (MS), Ability to Put on Socks (APS), and Coordination (COORD). The TG had improved performance in LLE (+13.8%), RULE (+24.3%), LULE (+22.9%), and MS (- 0.9 s), whereas the CG improved performance in RULE (+13.9%) and LULE (+14.1%), but had increased time in COORD by (+1.5 s), and these were the only tests showing significant interactions of group vs. time (p<0.05). The results suggest that 12 weeks of RT seem to be sufficient to induce positive changes on physical and functional fitness of healthy and previously untrained elderly women.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the concordance of two obesity indicators, BMI and % body fat in boys and girls. Therefore, 100 girls and 100 boys, with ages ranging from 8 to 10 years, were submitted to anthropometric measurements for subsequent calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI) and % body fat, both as obesity indicators. The variables were analyzed with relation to the reference criteria proposed by Williams et al and Cole et al. The results were then analyzed with the kappa index, elucidating that 79% of the boys and 85% of the girls were classified simultaneously by both procedures. The kappa index indicated a moderate agreement between the two obesity indicators for obese and non-obese classification. However, our data demonstrated that 21% of the boys and 15% of the girls showed normal weight according to BMI, but were classified as obese according to the % body fat. The results show that BMI, when compared with skinfolds, had moderate agreement in children from 8 to 10 years old for detecting obesity.

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 12 weeks of resistance training on muscle strength, body composition and triglycerides in sedentary men. fourteen healthy men were randomly divided into experimental (eg = 29 ± 1 yrs; 180.0 ± 3.0 cm; 80.5 ± 1.8 kg) and control (cg = 27 ± 1 yrs; 170.0 ± 2.0 cm; 76.2 ± 0.9 kg) groups. the eg subjects participated in a resistance training protocol during 12 weeks, three times per week. the program of resistance training included 10 exercises performed in two sets of 10-20 repetitions. body mass, height, skinfold thickness and triglycerides were measured before and after the 12 weeks of intervention. one maximal repetition test (1rm) was done to measure muscle strength. significant differences (p<0.05) were observed on the sum of skinfolds only in eg after the resistance training, while body mass and triglycerides did not change in neither groups. muscle strength increased (p<0.05) in both exercises performed between the first and the second and between the second and the third 1-rm tests. therefore, 12 weeks of resistance training were enough to improve muscle strength and sum of skinfolds, but without promoting any changes in triglycerides and body mass.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether participation in exercise programs specifically developed for elderly translates into a more active lifestyle. OBJECTIVES: To compare the objectively measured level of physical activity in daily life (PADL) between physically independent elderly who participate or do not participate in community-based exercise programs; and to evaluate which factors are associated with the higher level of PADL in these subjects. METHOD: 134 elderly participants in community-based exercise programs (PG) and 104 non-participants (NPG) had their level of PADL measured using pedometers during 7 days. Other measurements: 6-minute walking test (6MWT), incremental shuttle walking test (ISWT), muscle strength, flexibility and balance. RESULTS: The PG had higher 1-week mean daily step count than NPG (8314 [IQR 5971-10060] vs. 6250 [IQR 4346-8207] steps/day, p<0.0001), as well as higher step count in any day of the week. There was a higher proportion of physically active subjects (>8000 steps/day) in PG than in NPG (37% vs. 16%, respectively; p<0.001), as well as the proportion of sedentary subjects (<5000 steps/day) (14% vs. 33%, respectively; p<0.001). Participation in exercise programs, 6MWT and ISWT explained a higher daily steps count (model r2=0.56, p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: In physically independent elderly, a higher level of physical activity in daily life occurs in those who participate in community-based exercise programs, regardless of the weekday and including non-program days. Participation of elderly in community-based exercise programs should be more systematically available and encouraged due to its close link to higher activity levels and better exercise capacity. Abstract: In this work, we describe the molecular cloning and pharmacological properties of an acidic phospholipase A 2 (PLA 2) isolated from Bothrops pauloensis snake venom . This enzyme, denominated BpPLA 2-TXI, was purified by four chromatographic steps and represents 2.4% of the total snake venom protein content. BpPLA 2-TXI is a monomeric protein with a molecular mass of 13.6 kDa, as demonstrated by Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) analysis and its theoretical isoelectric point was 4.98. BpPLA 2-TXI was catalytically active and showed some pharmacological effects such as inhibition of platelet aggregation induced by collagen or ADP and also induced edema and myotoxicity. BpPLA 2-TXI displayed low cytotoxicity on TG-180 (CCRF S 180 II) and Ovarian Carcinoma (OVCAR-3), whereas no cytotoxicity was found in regard to MEF (Mouse Embryonic Fibroblast) and Sarcoma 180 (TIB-66). The N-terminal sequence of forty-eight amino acid residues was determined by Edman degradation. In addition, the complete primary structure of 122 amino acids was deduced by cDNA from the total RNA of the venom gland using specific primers, and it was significantly similar to other acidic D49 PLA 2s. The phylogenetic analyses showed that BpPLA 2-TXI forms a group with other acidic D49 PLA 2s from the gender Bothrops, which are characterized by a catalytic activity associated with anti-platelet effects.

Abstract: It was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the internal markers: indigestible fibers (FDAi and FDNi), lignin Klason and the external markers: chromic oxide and modified enriched hidroxiphenilpropan LIPE on the total intake estimates of penned crossbreed heifers (Holstein x Zebu). They′re assigned to four diets: elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) silage; elephant grass silage and commercial concentrate; chopped sugar cane and urea; chopped sugar cane, urea and commercial concentrate. The chromic oxide underestimated the heifers consumption of all diets and its estimates differed from either hod consumption or those obtained with markers. LIPE may replace chromic oxide because its consumption estimates did not differ from hod consumption of all diets. The lignin Klason showed to be more appropriate to estimate the heifers consumption that were fed with diets based on grass silage than those heifers fed with sugarcane. This marker underestimated the consumption of heifers that received sugarcane and urea (3,57kg/day of MS) when it was compared to the consumption registered in hod (4,05kg/day of MS), however, for those heifers that received sugarcane, urea and supply, lignin Klason underestimated the consumption (3,90kg/day of MS), so that, it differed form consumption in hod (4,90kg/day of MS). The indigestible fibers (FDAi and FDNi) were suitable to estimate the heifers consumption in all diets. Those results showed that markers present differentiated effect according to the roughage used.
