Abstract: ~Numerous researches have related Pilates and weight training methods in the development of theabdominal endurance the strengthening of the lumbar spine and back pain in maintaining good posture. ThePilates Method appears as a form of physical conditioning interested in providing general welfare of theindividual, and able to provide strength, flexibility and good posture. Strength training follows the same way,and furthermore provides hypertrophy, bone strengthening, increased caloric expenditure. The flexibility and abdominal resistance are physical qualities, components of health related physical fitness (HRPF), whichshould be properly trained. The aim of this study were to evaluate the influence of the Pilates Method (PIL)and strength training (ST) on abdominal endurance, flexibility, and compare the anthropometric and bodycomposition in women. The sample consisted of 20 women divided into 2 groups of 10 for each specifiedmethod. The following results were obtained for resistance abdominal (ABD), 26,9 rep (+10,2) and 30,7((+3,9); to flexibility (FLEX), 34,7 cm (+7,6) and 42,4 cm (+2,5); for body mass index (BMI), kg22,3 kg/m2(+2,6) e 23,0 kg/m2 (+2,5) and for the sum of skinfolds (SS), 138.9 mm (29.7), 148.6 mm ((35.0),respectively in the training groups MUS and PIL. We conclude that both training methods provideimprovement in abdominal muscular endurance as well as on flexibility, although the group involved withthe Pilates has demonstrated improved performance in motor skills. With regard to aspects of bodycomposition results were statistically identical.

Abstract: purpose: to identify extant adaptations into stomatognathic functions of chew, deglutition and speech in aged people at a long permanence institution. methods: 34 aged people, of both genders, being 15 feminine and 19 masculine, with ages ranging from 65 to 88 years, took part in the study. interviews were carried through containing questions for the aged people on general health and feeding and speech therapy evaluations were performed in order to characterize functions of chew, deglutition and speech. results: as for chew, it was observed that the majority of aged people showed an adapted chew, with exaggerated participation of perioral muscles, heaves of jaw and predominant chew standard was bilateral simultaneous. as for deglutition, it was observed that this function as well as chew were an adapted form into the majority of volunteers majority, we also observed the occurrence of exaggerated participation of perioral muscles and noise during deglutition. in speech evaluation we noted that in more than 50% of the aged people, there was great air escape occurring during speaks, as well as a rise of reduced larynx and the presence of substitution, omission, distortion and imprecision. conclusion: it was observed that aged people get adaptations during chew process in order to keep their possible diet next to when they were young. it was also noted that the studied aged people carry through some compensations during deglutition. the found speech characteristics do not limit severely aged people communication currently. it was still possible to observe that attendance to aged people needed to be carried through by an interdisciplinary team and that speech therapist can and must be part of this team assisting in preventing and/or rehabilitating issues related to stomatognathic functions.

Abstract: Cancer is a public health problem, primarily in developing countries. Elderly women are more prone to contracting different diseases, including sexual related neoplasms. The aim of this study was to determine the strategies used and knowledge regarding the prevention of cervical cancer in elderly women. This is a cross-sectional observational study. The sample was comprised of elderly women residents from the Brazilian Northeastern city who attended a coexistence group for elder people. After sample, calculation was obtained N of 209 participants. Associations between the independent and dependent variables were analyzed using the chi-squared test, considering p ≤ 0.05 as significant. The following programs were used for statistical analyses: Excel (Microsoft Office), to tabulate the data and prepare the tables and Bioestat 5.3 to test the associations. The prevalent age range was 60 to 70 years; most of the subjects were retired and had secondary schooling. Although a large number of those interviewed knew about cervical cancer, their knowledge was insufficient to take preventive measures. It is important that the elderly undergo a Pap smear, since the number of increasing cervical cancer cases is known to increase in this age range. In the coming decades, Brazil will have a significant elderly population, reaffirming the growing need for educational campaigns related to the health of elderly women, encouraging self-care and prevention in old age.

DISTIN O E CONTINUIDADE: UMA RESPOSTA AO PROBLEMA LEIBNIZIANO DA CONSCIêNCIA DISTINCTION AND CONTINUITY: AN ANSWER TO LEIBNIZ’S PROBLEM OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Abstract: The concept of apperception reflects the fundamental feature of Leibniz’s theory of perception, a theory which dissociates the act of perceiving from consciousness. However, the monads` series of perceptions is, according to the philosopher, governed by the principle of continuity, and this entails some difficulties when one tries to understand apperception as a perception of second-order and discontinuous in relation to the other perceptions. For that reason, we will defend that the best interpretation of Leibniz’s concept of apperception is that consciousness results from an increase in the degree of distinction of first-order perceptions, which renders unnecessary the resort to second-level perceptions.

Abstract: This research aimed to establish reference values for hemogram and clinical biochemistry, aiming at to evaluating the liver function of healthy macaws (Ara sp.), with the influence of species on the blood constituents, in order to contribute to the health monitoring of this species kept in ecological farms in the state of Bahia (Brazil). We used forty-five blood samples from three distinct species: green-winged macaw (Ara chloroptera), blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) and scarlet macaws (Ara macao). A total of 3.5 mL of blood was collected from the ulnar vein of each bird: 1.5 mL was placed in tubes containing EDTA, to carry out the hemogram, and 2.0 mL of blood without anticoagulant was used to obtain serum, for the biochemical analysis. The averages obtained for the blood of the genus Ara were PCV: 2.74 ± 0.48 x106/μL; VG: 36.8 ± 5.56%; Hb: 15.4 ± 2.42 g/dL; thrombocytes:9,580 ± 2,850 x103/μL; leukocyte count: 5,340 ± 3,580/μL; lymphocytes: 1,408.8 ± 1,020.7/μL; heterophils: 3,252.0 ± 2,026.3/μL; monocytes: 169.1 ± 227.5/μL; basophils: 34.2 ± 72.3/μL; eosinophils: 186.9 ± 183.9/μL. The results of the serum biochemical parameters were activity of the enzymes AST 67.6 ± 12.8 IU/L; CK 77.9 ± 44.6 IU/L; LDH 240.1 ± 85.6 IU/L; cholesterol 160.3 ± 34.8 mg/dL; triglycerides 111.8 ± 58.6 mg/dL; glucose 228.5 ± 38.1 mg/dL and total proteins: 3.37 ± 0.8 g/dL. Significant differences (p <0.05) influenced by species were detected for the values of number of PCV, GV, number of leukocytes and the concentration of cholesterol and glucose.
