Ciência Animal Brasileira , 2012,
Abstract: The exploration of ostriches aims at trading meat, feathers, leather and grease. The digestive system is intimately related to productivity, and the celiac artery is amongst the major vessels responsible for its nutrition. The artery′s origin and distribution was studied here. In 30 specimens, the left ischiatic artery was cannulated for the injection of a blood vessels marker solution and then fixed in formalin solution 10% via deep intramuscular, subcutaneous and intracavitary applications. We concluded that this artery originated from the descending aorta, its first branch is ventral and it headed for the right side sending branches to: esophagus, proventriculus, ventriculus, spleen, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, duodenum, ileum, left and right cecum.

Biotemas , 2009,
Abstract: A study was carried out on the origin, number and disposition of the arterial vessels and their branches which irrigated the cloacal bursas of 30 hens (Gallus gallus) of the Hybro PG lineage. First of all, the left isquiadic artery from the samples was cannulated and injected with a 50% colored solution of Neoprene latex “450”; then, we continued the experiment with dissection whose results confi rmed that the cloacal bursa was supplied by direct branches from the left and right internal pudendal arteries and bursocloacal arteries in 100% of the cases, varying only in terms of the numbers and disposition of their branches. There were also some branches from the median caudal artery (23%) and left external pudendal (3.33%). The total number of branches varied from 1 to 4 and their distribution was unique in each sample.

Abstract: objective: to identify the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and the presence of cardiovascular risk factors in pediatric patients after one year of renal transplant. methods: this was an exploratory retrospective study. data were collected from 111 medical records of pediatric patients (aged 0 to incomplete 18 year old) who underwent renal transplant at both the "hospital do rim and hypertension (renal and high blood pressure hospital) and the s?o paulo hospital of the federal university of s?o paulo between january 2000 and january 2006. results: a half of patients (50.5%) used high blood pressure medications prior to undergoing renal transplant. a year after renal transplant the use of high blood pressure medications by the pediatric patients was reduced by 28%. before transplant, 13.5% of the patients were overweighed and did not have any significant changes in their weight after the transplant (12.6%). there was an increase in the number of overweight patients after a year of renal transplant by 50.0%. approximately 1.0% of the patients developed diabetes mellitus after the renal transplant. conclusion: obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes mellitus were common conditions among pediatric patients after renal transplant.

Abstract: variations in hematologic parameters are used to assess the degree of training or clinical state of the animal. the hematologic evaluation of horses at rest has been an object of study in order to establish a correlation with training or athletic capacity. the purpose of this study was to evaluate the hematologic profile of horses subjected to team penning competitions, correlating sex and frequency of physical activity. two milliliters of blood were drawn through a puncture made in the external jugular vein from 29 horses, 18 males and 11 females, at rest (moment i) and after exercising (moment ii). the blood samples were processed in an abc vet automated veterinary hematology analyzer (horiba abx diagnostics). the animals were divided into group a, b, c and d according to the number of times they participated in the competition. the values of globular volume, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, rod-shaped segmented neutrophils and monocytes increased after the physical exercise, unlike the number of lymphocytes and eosinophils, which decreased. a comparison of the before/after exercise correlations showed no significant differences (p<0.05) between males and females. in addition, it was found that the value of the mi/mii ratio for the globular volume, hemoglobin and number of erythrocytes varied according to the frequency of the exercise. it was concluded that the team penning competition produces hematologic alterations in horses, which are affected by the frequency of exercising, regardless of sex.

Abstract: purpose: to characterize the electrical activity of the masseter muscle during swallowing of liquids in healthy young adults. methods: participants were 14 volunteers considered healthy according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria established for this study. the bilateral electromyographic evaluation of the masseter muscle was conducted at rest and in swallowing tasks of 14.5 ml, 20 ml and 100 ml of liquid. the electromyographic signal was normalized by the maximum voluntary activity resisted (mvar), considered as 100% of the muscle's electrical activity. results: in the right masseter, the highest average percentage was found in the 20 ml task, and in the left masseter, in the 14.5 ml task. in the right masseter there was difference between the 14.5 ml and the 20 ml swallowing tasks. in the left masseter, no differences were found between the swallowing tasks. conclusion: the electrical activity of the masseter muscle in healthy young adults during deglutition of liquids can be influenced by volume swallowed, and present different responses bilaterally.

Abstract: the saimiri sciureus is a non human primate that exists in the amazon region, which is not in the list of endangered animals according to ibama. so, this research systemized the collateral branches visceral of the abdominal aorta of these animals. it was used six animals, three males and three females, which had the circulatory system filled with latex neoprene added of radiographic contrast. the results showed that the abdominal aorta ventrally emitted a collateral visceral branch called celiac artery, which originates three branches: left gastric, hepatic and lienal arteries. the branches of the celiac artery promoted the irrigation of the stomach, duodenum, liver, pancreas and spleen. then the abdominal aorta emitted the cranial mesenteric artery, which was of a larger size than the celiac artery and was caudally juxtaposed. the cranial mesenteric artery supply branches that irrigate the final portion of the duodenum, pancreas, jejunum, ileum, cecum and colon. abdominal aorta emitted laterally the right and left kidney arteries. the left adrenal artery as a collateral branch of the celiac artery and the right adrenal artery has been originated in the right renal artery. the mesenteric caudal artery was emitted from the ventral surface of the abdominal aorta, below the kidney arteries. in l6, abdominal aorta has two derivations to origin the right and left external iliac arteries and these had given origin to the internal iliac and femoral artery right and left. the testicular or ovary arteries were emitted in internal iliac arteries. of the abdominal aorta led to origin the sacral median artery and in this sequence there is the caudal median artery. the study of this specie is very important to generate knowledge about non human primates existing in our country. it can be said that saimiri sciureus is an important biological model for development of biomedical researches.

Abstract: this study was carried out to evaluate intake, nutrient digestibility and body weight gain of foals on diets of concentrate and legume hay. treatments were: lucerne hay (medicago sativa), campo grande stylo hay (20% stylosanthes macrocephala and 80% stylosanthes capitata) and mineir?o stylo hay (stylosanthes guianensis cv. mineir?o). fifteen weaned foals at 160 kg body weight (bw) were used. the experiment was entirely randomized with three treatments and five replicates. dry matter intake was estimated at 30 g of dry matter (dm)/kg bw and was comprised of 40% concentrate meal and 60% hay. fecal production and nutrient digestibility were calculated by the lipe? marker methodology. there was no difference between lucerne hay and campo grande stylo hay intake, but intake of mineir?o stylo hay was lower than that of lucerne hay. body weight gain and nutrient digestibility coefficients were similar for foals fed different diets. intake was similar for campo grande and lucerne hay, and led to similar body weight gain in diets with concentrate. mineir?o stylo hay, at 137 days of growth, was not palatable for the foals.
