Mesopic Visual Contrast Sensitivity in Patients with Major Depression  [PDF]

Abstract: The present study evaluated the effects of major depression on visual contrast sensitivity (CS) at low mesopic luminance (.7 cd/m2 mean luminance), a condition that has been little explored in the literature. We measured spatial visual CS in 20 male volunteers aged 20 - 30 years, including 10 healthy individuals and 10 medicated individuals with major depression, to linear sine-wave gratings of .25, 1.0, and 4.0 cycles per degree (cpd) of visual angle using the psychophysical staircase method with forced choice. The average spatial visual CS in the depressed group was approximately 1.7 lower than the average spatial visual CS in the control group. However, the post hoc test showed significant differences only at the spatial frequencies of .25 and 1.0 cpd (p < .05), which are likely processed by the magnocellular visual pathway. These results suggest that spatial visual CS to sine-wave gratings should be used to evaluate the responsiveness of the visual system in patients with major depression under conditions of low luminance.

Abstract: Salvia hispanica L. is a herbacia plant that originates from Mexico and Guatemala, and it is currently known by the popular name of chia. Currently, chia seeds have been considered to be of great importance for human health and nutrition because they have a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids. They contain the largest known percentage of fatty α-linolenic acid (ALA) in plants—approximately 68%. Furthermore, they are an excellent source of protein, dietary fiber, calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin B and phenolic compounds that have antioxidant properties. However, despite the high nutritional value present in the food and the possible health benefits of its nutrients, there is a need to evaluate the bioaccessibility of its micronutrients to measure their effectiveness. Thus, we evaluated the chemical composition of chia seeds from different producers, their lipid profiles and the bioaccessibility of some of their minerals.
Discovery of Novel Orally Active Anti-Inflammatory N-Phenylpyrazolyl-N-Glycinyl-Hydrazone Derivatives That Inhibit TNF-α Production

Abstract: Herein, we describe the synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of novel N-phenylpyrazolyl-N-glycinyl-hydrazone derivatives that were designed as novel prototypes of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitors. All of the novel synthesized compounds described in this study were evaluated for their in vitro capacity to inhibit tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α production in cultured macrophages) and in vitro MAPK p38α inhibition. The two most active anti-TNF-α derivatives, (E)-2-(3-tert-butyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-ylamino)-N’-((4-(2-morpholinoethoxy)naphthalen-1-y?l)methylene)acetohydrazide(4a) and (E)-2-(3-tert-butyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-ylamino)-N’-(4-chlorobenzylid?ene)acetohydrazide(4f), were evaluated to determine their in vivo anti-hyperalgesic profiles in carrageenan-induced thermal hypernociception model in rats. Both compounds showed anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties comparable to SB-203580 used as a standard drug, by oral route at a dose of 100 μmol/kg. This bioprofile is correlated with the ability of NAH derivatives (4a) and (4f) suppressing TNF-α levels in vivo by 57.3 and 55.8%, respectively.

Abstract: a variety of studies involving schizophrenic patients have shown the occurrence of severe disabilities related to perception and cognition. most diagnostics rely on alterations that reveal faulty reasoning. our studies evaluate altered visual form and size perception in schizophrenic and major depression patients using 24 paintings by salvador dalí. we conducted two studies comparing experimental and control groups and found in both cases that schizophrenic patients first saw forms 1.5-3.0 times larger than controls. in another study with major depression patients, we show the absence of alterations in size perception during aggravated depressive symptoms. these effects on size perception can contribute as markers in the precocious diagnostic of the onset of positive symptoms in schizophrenia. we suggest that these paintings by dalí can be employed as a tool to assess the state of visual form and size perception in schizophrenic patients, and therefore prevent cognitive deterioration by introducing early treatment.
Novel Potent Imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-N-Glycinyl-Hydrazone Inhibitors of TNF-α Production: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Abstract: In this work, we describe the design, synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of novel imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-N-glycinyl-hydraz?onederivatives (1a–k) intended for use as inhibitors of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) production. The compounds were designed based on the orally active anti-inflammatory prototype LASSBio-1504 (2), which decreases the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro pharmacological evaluation of the imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine compounds (1) showed that substitution of the N-phenylpyrazole core present in prototype 2 by a bioisosteric imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine scaffold generated anti-TNF-α compounds that were more potent than the previously described N-phenylpyrazole derivative 2 and as potent as SB-203580, a p38 MAPK inhibitor. The most active derivative (E)-2-(2-tert-butylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridin?-3-ylamino)-N’-(4-chlorobenzylidene)acetohydrazide, or LASSBio-1749 (1i) was orally active as an anti-inflammatory agent in a subcutaneous air pouch model, reducing expressively the levels in vivo of TNF-α and other pro-inflammatory cytokines at all of the tested doses.
Substrate selection of the caprellid Caprella dilatata (Crustacea, Amphipoda)

Abstract: the diversity of space and the variability of environmental conditions that affect habitat quality for organisms, are determining factors in the selection of an ideal habitat. the present study aimed to understand the substrate selectivity of a caprellid amphipod, caprella dilatata, in natural environments along the southern brazilian coast and in laboratory conditions. a total of 31 biological substrates sheltering invertebrates were collected across various localities. c. dilatata was recorded in 11 substrate samples, and was a dominant species only in finely branched and softly surfaced algal substrate, ascidian and bryozoan colonies, and the surfaces of buoys and ropes. laboratory experiments for substrate selection by c. dilatata were performed under two conditions: two-algal substrates and four-algal substrates. the phytals of gracilaria cervicornis, pterocladia capillacea, sargassum cymosum and ulva fasciata were selected for the experiments due to their contrasting degrees of ramification. in the first experiment (two-algal substrates), caprellids were transferred to three aquaria containing varied combinations of two algal substrates with a total of nine combinations. for the second experiment (four-algal substrates), all species of algae were combined together in each aquarium. amphipods obtained for laboratory experiments always showed an exoskeleton color very close to that of the original algal substrate. caprellids showed a strong preference for the original algal substrate. despite the cosmopolitan morphology of c. dilatata for selection of the substrate, the individuals were mostly found in structurally complex substrates, and the experiments show the importance of camouflage for these caprellids.
LASSBio-1135: A Dual TRPV1 Antagonist and Anti-TNF-Alpha Compound Orally Effective in Models of Inflammatory and Neuropathic Pain

Abstract: LASSBio-1135 is an imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivative with high efficacy in screening models of nociception and inflammation, presumed as a weak COX-2 inhibitor. In order to tease out its mechanism of action, we investigated others possible target for LASSBio-1135, such as TNF-α and TRPV1, to better characterize it as a multitarget compound useful in the treatment of chronic pain. TRPV1 modulation was assessed in TRPV1-expressing Xenopus oocytes against capsaicin and low pH-induced current. Modulation of TNF-α production was evaluated in culture of macrophages stimulated with LPS. In vivo efficacy of LASSBio-1135 was investigated in carrageenan and partial sciatic ligation-induced thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia. Corroborating its previous demonstration of efficacy in a model of capsaicin-induced hyperalgesia, LASSBio-1135 blocks capsaicin-elicited currents in a non-competitive way with an IC50 of 580 nM as well as low pH-induced current at 50 μM. As an additional action, LASSBio-1135 inhibited TNF-α release in these cells stimulated by LPS with an IC50 of 546 nM by reducing p38 MAPK phosphorilation. Oral administration of 100 μmol.Kg?1 LASSBio-1135 markedly reduced thermal hyperalgesia induced by carrageenan, however at 10 μmol.Kg?1 only a partial reduction was observed at the 4th h. Neutrophil recruitment and TNF-α production after carrageenan stimulus was also inhibited by the treatment with LASSBio-1135. Modulating TRPV1 and TNF-α production, two key therapeutic targets of neuropathic pain, 100 μmol.Kg?1 LASSBio-1135 was orally efficacious in reversing thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia produced by partial sciatic ligation 7–11 days after surgery without provoking hyperthermia, a common side effect of TRPV1 antagonists. In conclusion LASSBio-1135, besides being a weak COX-2 inhibitor, is a non-competitive TRPV1 antagonist and a TNF-α inhibitor. As a multitarget compound, LASSBio-1135 is orally efficacious in a model of neuropathic pain without presenting hyperthermia.

Application of a Pid+fuzzy controller on the motion control system in machine tools

Abstract: this work deals with an hybrid pid+fuzzy logic controller applied to control the machine tool biaxial table motions. the non-linear model includes backlash and the axis elasticity. two pid controllers do the primary table control. a third pid+fuzzy controller has a cross coupled structure whose function is to minimise the trajectory contour errors. once with the three pid controllers tuned, the system is simulated with and without the third controller. the responses results are plotted and compared to analyse the effectiveness of this hybrid controller over the system. they show that the proposed methodology reduces the contour error in a proportion of 70:1.
Evaluation of cutting forces and prediction of chatter vibrations in milling

Abstract: the prediction of chatter vibrations between the cutter and workpiece is important as a guidance to the machine tool user for an optimal selection of depth of cut and spindle rotation, resulting in maximum chip removal rate without this undesirable vibration. this can be done by some approaches. in this work, an analytical method is applied in which the time-varying directional dynamic milling forces coefficients are expanded in fourier series and integrated in the width of cut bound by entry and exit angles. the forces in the contact zone between cutter and workpiece during the cut are evaluated by an algorithm using a mathematical model derived from several experimental tests with a dynamometer located between the workpiece and machine table. the algorithm results depend of the physical properties of the workpiece material and the cutter geometry. the modal parameters of the machine-workpiece-tool system like natural frequencies, damping and residues must also be identified experimentally. at this point, it is possible to plot the stability lobes to this dynamic system. these curves relates the spindle speed with axial depth of cut, separating stable and unstable areas, allowing the selection of cutting parameters resulting maximum productivity, with acceptable surface roughness and absence of chatter vibrations. experimental face milling tests were performed in a knee-type machine, using a five inserts cutter. the results showed perfect agreement between chatter prediction and experimental tests.
