Seasonality of the Lagged Relationship between ENSO and the Northern Hemispheric Polar Vortex Variability

Abstract: This paper reports the seasonal feature of the relationship between ENSO and the stratospheric Polar Vortex Oscillation (PVO) variability in the Northern Hemisphere. It is shown that the lagged ENSO-PVO coupling relationship exhibits distinct seasonal feature, due to the strong seasonality of PVO and ENSO. Specifically, the PVO variability not only during winter, but also in autumn and spring months, is significantly correlated with ENSO anomalies leading by seasons; however, no significant effect of ENSO is found on the PVO variability in winter months of November and February. Although a significant ENSO effect is primarily observed when ENSO leads PVO by about one year, a significant correlation is also found between PVO in the following spring months (M+1A+1) and ENSO anomalies in the previous autumn (A-1S-1O-1N-1) when ENSO anomalies lead by about 18 months. The significant correlation between PVO in various seasons and the corresponding ENSO anomalies leading by seasons could be explicitly verified in most of the individual years, confirming that the lagged ENSO effect can largely modulate the seasonal timescale variability of PVO. Moreover, the composite spatial patterns of the zonal-mean temperature anomalies further show that the ENSO effect on the PVO in various seasons is related to the interannual variability of the seasonal timescale PVO events.

Abstract: A new lattice Boltzmann equation(LBE) model is developed based on the previous LBE model and the conservative criteria of mass, momentum and energy. The result shows that the LBE model is further improved in an external force field. The relation between the buoyancy strength parameter and the Grashof number is obtained through the recovery of dynamic equations. The viscosity transport term is obviously improved by comparing the derived momentum equation with Navier-Stokes equation. It is shown that the viscosity stress not only depends on the velocity gradient and the compressibility of the fluid, but also depends on the gradient of unsteady internal energy and unsteady momentum flux. The flow field with nonuniform temperature has been simulated by using the model. It is shown that the model is valid both in theory and in numerical experiment.

Abstract: The daily NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data are employed to study the short term evolution of the subtropical anticyclone over the western Pacific(SAWP) in July 1998 Firstly, the characteristics of SAWP related to the three distinct periods of Meiyu are analyzed It is found that the breaking of the belt type SAWP is closely related to the variation of the circulation in the mid high latitudes Specifically, the intrusion of cold air from the mid high latitudes into the subtropics is very important to the breaking of the belt of SAWP Then the dynamic processes related to the short term variation of SAWP are studied based on the general thermodynamic theory It is shown that the southward/northward intrusion of cold/warm air contributes to the development of north/south wind around SAWP, and result in the SAWP anomalies At last, this mechanism is verified by a numerical experiment based on the atmospheric circulation model R42L9/LASG IAP

Abstract: With the discrete method of the hexagonal cell and three different velocities of particle population in each cell, a two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model is developed in this paper.1,2] The collision operator in the Boltzmann equation is expanded to fourth order using the Taylor expansion.3,4] With this model, good results have been obtained from the numerical simulation of the reflection phenomenon of the shock wave on the surface of an obstacle, and the numerical stability is also good. Thus the applicability of the D2Q 19 model is verified.

Abstract: 针对1998年7月长江中下游地区二度梅期间副热带高压的短期演变特征,利用NCEP逐日资料,首先揭示了此期间西太平洋副热带高压发生东西断裂、副高单体发展的短期异常特征,进而指出了中高纬环流调整与副高短期变异的对应关系.在发现与中高纬环流调整相伴随的强冷空气是副高发生变异的关键因素的基础上,利用大气热力学基本原理,研究副高短期变异的动力机制,发现在副高边缘的冷暖空气活动通过与南北风发展直接关联,而影响副高的短期变异,是副高短期变异的重要机制之一.最后,利用R42L9/LASGIAP大气环流模式,通过敏感性数值试验证实了上述冷暖空气活动影响副高发生变异的动力机制.
A New Distribution-Free Approach to Constructing the Confidence Region for Multiple Parameters

Abstract: Construction of confidence intervals or regions is an important part of statistical inference. The usual approach to constructing a confidence interval for a single parameter or confidence region for two or more parameters requires that the distribution of estimated parameters is known or can be assumed. In reality, the sampling distributions of parameters of biological importance are often unknown or difficult to be characterized. Distribution-free nonparametric resampling methods such as bootstrapping and permutation have been widely used to construct the confidence interval for a single parameter. There are also several parametric (ellipse) and nonparametric (convex hull peeling, bagplot and HPDregionplot) methods available for constructing confidence regions for two or more parameters. However, these methods have some key deficiencies including biased estimation of the true coverage rate, failure to account for the shape of the distribution inherent in the data and difficulty to implement. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new distribution-free method for constructing the confidence region that is based only on a few basic geometrical principles and accounts for the actual shape of the distribution inherent in the real data. The new method is implemented in an R package, distfree.cr/R. The statistical properties of the new method are evaluated and compared with those of the other methods through Monte Carlo simulation. Our new method outperforms the other methods regardless of whether the samples are taken from normal or non-normal bivariate distributions. In addition, the superiority of our method is consistent across different sample sizes and different levels of correlation between the two variables. We also analyze three biological data sets to illustrate the use of our new method for genomics and other biological researches.
Marker-Based Estimation of Genetic Parameters in Genomics

Abstract: Linear mixed model (LMM) analysis has been recently used extensively for estimating additive genetic variances and narrow-sense heritability in many genomic studies. While the LMM analysis is computationally less intensive than the Bayesian algorithms, it remains infeasible for large-scale genomic data sets. In this paper, we advocate the use of a statistical procedure known as symmetric differences squared (SDS) as it may serve as a viable alternative when the LMM methods have difficulty or fail to work with large datasets. The SDS procedure is a general and computationally simple method based only on the least squares regression analysis. We carry out computer simulations and empirical analyses to compare the SDS procedure with two commonly used LMM-based procedures. Our results show that the SDS method is not as good as the LMM methods for small data sets, but it becomes progressively better and can match well with the precision of estimation by the LMM methods for data sets with large sample sizes. Its major advantage is that with larger and larger samples, it continues to work with the increasing precision of estimation while the commonly used LMM methods are no longer able to work under our current typical computing capacity. Thus, these results suggest that the SDS method can serve as a viable alternative particularly when analyzing ‘big’ genomic data sets.
New functional molecular markers for plants in the functional genomics era

Abstract: With the development of functional genomics,expressed sequence tags(ESTs)has become an important resource of PCR-based molecular markers for plants.The advancement in functional molecular markers for plants in the functional genomics era,including EST-SSR,CAPS,SNP,SRAP and TRAP were reviewed.Compared with conventional markers,the EST-derived markers are a novel type of molecular tool with remarkable advantages,such as being easily to develop,more informative,and highly transferable,especially for preferential targeting ORFs.Applications of the new functional molecular markers in plants genetics and breeding are summarized,such as construction of genetic linkage maps,important trait gene tagging location,comparative mapping,genetic diversity,cultivars identification and marker-assisted selection breeding.

Abstract: 研究首先从桃中克隆了AGAMOUS(AG)同源基因PpMADS4的第二个内含子--pPpMADS4,全长约2.1kb.序列分析表明,该内含子含有一些对基因表达十分重要的调控元件.同时,克隆了七个不同桃品种中的PpMADS4基因的第二内含子,序列比对和SNP测算表明,PpMADS4第二内含子是一段SNP富集区域,具有高度的核苷酸多态性,但是在这段序列上各个调控元件的序列和位置都非常保守,暗示了这些调控元件可能具有很重要的生物学功能.为了认识这一内含子的调控功能,将pPpMADS4与minimal35S连接并与GUS基因融合,构建表达载体转入野生型拟南芥中.GUS染色显示,其表达主要分布在花的两轮生殖器官上,这与拟南芥中AG第二内含子调控的GUS着色部位相似,但存在着差异.PpMADS4第二内含子能够特异启动GUS在花发育晚期的表达.
