Abstract: invasive meningococcal disease constitutes a worldwide health problem. gram negative bacteria, neisseria meningitidis is the causal agent of this disease. plain or conjugated polysaccharide vaccines are available against four of five serogroups responsible of more than 95% of cases in the world. because serogroup b polysaccharide is non immunogenic, some vaccine candidates, based on outer membrane proteins have been obtained and evaluated in clinical trials. bactericidal activity determination and elisa igg have been used to evaluate immune response generated by antimeningococcal vaccines. the latter has been used, as potency test, to release va-mengoc-bc? vaccine lots, produced at finlay institute. as a result of the collaboration with norwegian researchers, a vaccine candidate based on outer membrane proteins against serogroups a and w 135 , has been obtained and evaluated in animal models. the current work describes the standardization of an elisa method to be used in the immune response evaluation of the bivalent vaccinal candidate.

Abstract: an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa) was developed to quantify tetanus antitoxin activity in guinea pig sera based on a previously calibrated standard. this test is proposed as an alternative to the traditional in vivo neutralization assay used for potency evaluation of tetanus vaccines.the accuracy, precision and linearity of our elisa were determined. both methods were used to evaluate 75 guinea pig sera and the results were compared by linear regression analysis. the individual immunological responses against different lots of tetanus vaccine were also studied. the elisa showed an excellent accuracy, with recovery values between 90-110%; intra, inter and total-assay imprecision ranging around 10% and parallelism deviations below 10%. a high correlation was found between our elisa and the in vivo neutralization assay (r2= 0,989). the seroprotection levels of the tetanus vaccines tested were over 83%. all those results indicate our elisa is an excellent alternative procedure for potency testing of tetanus toxoid vaccines.
A coupling ocean-atmosphere climatic modelling study for rainfall and soil moisture simulations on the S o Francisco River basin

Ambiente e água : An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science , 2011,
Abstract: The aim of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the Ocean-Atmosphere Global Circulation Coupling Model (CGCM) performance for forecasting the interannual rainfall variability on the S o Francisco River Basin, during austral summer (DJF) 1997-2007. In addition, the rainfall predictions and calculated potential vapor transpiration were the input variables for the Hydrological Balance Model (HBM) experiments to obtain soil moisture estimations. Simulations using CGCM were compared with forecastings based on the Atmosphere Global Circulation Model (AGCM), which has been used previously for this purpose. Even though there were systematic errors of rainfall over estimations for the Basin, the CGCM had better performance than the AGCM at the spatial representation and showed positive correlation coefficients with observation values. These facts corroborate that ocean-atmosphere coupling is an important mechanism to be taken into account for rainfall forecasting at the Brazilian southeast zone. On the other hand, the HBM-AGCM and the HBM-CGCM were quite similar in terms of correlation coefficients (0,6) for soil moisture estimation. This suggests that the corrected estimated precipitation and potential evapotranspiration (ETP) resulting from climate modeling and dynamics of the AGCM and CGCM, as input data for water balance models in the seasonal scale, can be used to provide support to the best practices for the management of surface water in the basin of the S o Francisco River.

Presunciones, verdad y normas procesales
Aguiló Regla, Josep
Isegoría , 2006,
Abstract: The aim of this article is threefold: 1) To cast some light on the controversial issue of the “nature” of presumptions in law; to this purpose, showing the gap existing between “is presumable” and “shall be presumed” (or “ought to be presumed”) is the way to adequately individuate the idea of “presumption norms”. 2) Once this idea has been made clear, to show the need to bring, in the analysis of it, the distinction between rules and principles; this allows to distinguish, in turn, between presumption norms which are rules (“presumption rules”) and presumption norms which are principles (“presumption principles”). 3) To try to dissolve, in theoretical terms, the socalled “iuris et de iure presumptions” (or “conclusive presumptions”); to this end, “presumption norms” (which oblige to presume) are distinguished from “presumption-based norms” (which do not oblige to presume).

Abstract: this paper tries to continue the way started by a previous one about didactics of our own disciplines in the polimodal level, where we proposed to read a theatrical play about the philosopher baruch spinoza and analyze different aspects of it from both philosophy and literature. in this opportunity, we would like to show how it is possible to work with a philosophical text, socrates'apology, in both disciplinary spaces. though many teachers use non traditional resources (literary texts, comics, movies, news' articles...) in the teaching of philosophy, usually it's very hard to find bibliography which describes systematically how the experience could be concreted. besides the philosophical questions that we could distinguish in apology (philosophy's concept, philosophical method, pedagogic conception, ethical values…), from perspective of literature this text allows to undertake its teaching from a present theoretical frame, the discourse's theory. while we put in evidence the connections that exist between different discourse practices (artistic and non artistic) of one society and the differences between reality and discourse, the student will have the possibility of thinking about fallacy of some disciplinary prejudices that troubled his access to literary/philosophical texts and will open his reading of world as a big cultural text.

Revista M??dica Electr?3nica , 2010,
Abstract: acute respiratory infections are among the ten main death causes in general population, and among the three first causes of death in less-than-5-years-old children. in the genesis of the acute respiratory infections in pediatric ages, who/pho point to several risk facts, as immaturity of the immunologic system, asthma and its complications. among the most frequent infections are pneumonias, requiring treatment with wide spectrum antibiotics. if we add to that the asthma conventional treatment, usually including steroids, the results will be a ground favourable for the development of opportunistic bacterial infections. in that way, a vicious circle is established: respiratory infection-allergy- respiratory infection, allowing the installation of germs, than even if they are normal flora, when there is a decrease of systemic and local immunity, are able to colonize the respiratory system. metabolic diseases, like diabetes mellitus type i, help the emergence of infections secondary to hyper glycaemia, and the status of secondary immunodeficiency they provoke. there are individual facts associated to the acute respiratory infections, like age; frequency and seriousness are bigger in less-than- one-year-old children, especially in those lees than two months old, low weight at birth, lack of breastfeeding, undernourishment, recurrent respiratory infections, uncompleted vaccination scheme, vitamin a deficiency. among the social facts related with the acute respiratory infections frequency and complications are overcrowding, ground floor in the house, parents with low scholarship, low or insufficient per capita income.

Abstract: We present a case of a 34-year-old white female patient, of rural origins, with a history of 3rd degree bronchial asthma and respiratory arrests for that cause, who has required several admissions in the ICU. Gestation history 1, no deliveries, 1 abortion and secondary infertility, for which she was treated, along with her spouse, in the infertility consultation, in which ovulation disorders were diagnosed, consisting of bilateral tubaric obstruction on her and severe oligospermia on her spouse, for which they underwent combined surgical treatment. Tubaric permeability with hydrotubation was first accomplished, then ovulation and spermatogenesis with clomiphene citrate and then low-technology fertilization was performed, resulting in a quadruple pregnancy, which satisfactorily arrived to full term at 34 weeks of gestation. Due to the mother’s medical history, the risks involved in this type of pregnancy and its happy outcome, we decided to publish the case.
