Abstract: quantitative damages caused by stored pests are vitally important to seeds destined for investigation, since there are generally very small amounts. the study was carried out in seeds from 96 syrian barley lines preserved for six months at 15 + 2oc, with the objective of knowing this sort of losses provoked by rhyzoperta dominica f.; thus, weight reduction (g) was considered, 1000-grain weight (pmg) was determined, the number of adult insects in 1000 grains (namg) was estimated and attack index (ia) was also calculated. results showed that 12 lines were damaged by r. dominica, with an average weight (g) loss of 18 %; the lines studied showed a low pmg (32.38 g), whereas the estimated namg was of 31.25 and ia of 3.17 %.

Abstract: chickpea (cicer arietinum l.) is an excellent option for the cuban population’s feeding due to its high nutritious and medicinal value. chickpea has the advantage of being resistant to the drought and it also contributes to improve the soil quality due to the biological nitrogen fixation in association with the rhizobium bacterias genus. it allows to reduce the chemical fertilizers applications and minimize the emissions of contaminant gases to the atmosphere. with the purpose of to take advantage of these kindness and to substitute imports through the dissemination of the this species fundamentally in the local rural sector, it was introduced from the institute of investigations in dry areas (icarda) in the arabian republic of syria, a high chickpea genetic diversity, of the type ?kabuli?. the existence of this germoplasm, offers the possibility to explore the wide existent genetic variability in these materials, with the purpose of supporting the individual selection of excellent pure lines, adapted to local conditions. the characterization and selection of promising genotypes was based in three statistical analyses: variance analysis (anova), main components analysis (acp) and cluster. results showed that significant differences didn’t exist among the nurseries neither among the chickpea genotypes that integrate them. the more weight variables in the characterization of the evaluated germoplasm were: days to maturation, days to flowering, branches number, height and yield. five groups were conformed in based on these variables and one group was selected, integrated by seven promising lines that expressed high yield potential and good agronomic characteristic.

Abstract: A biocarbon after activation process showed the removal percentage of 92% of methylene blue in solution, the equilibrium parameter—RL value was in the interval from 0 to 1, with 46% of surface coverage degree. The Freundlich constant (n) was higher than 1 as an indication of the physical adsorption process. The Radlich-Peterson calculations obtained the higher R2 value which g constant near 1, a high similarity with Langmuir model. Temkin constant B1 was a positive indication of endothermic process. All calculations provided favorable results for the use of activated biocarbon for dye removing and possible for other organic substances.
Statistical mechanics of dissipative systems

Abstract: We propose a generalization of classical statistical mechanics which describes the behavior of dissipative systems placed in contact with a heat bath. In contrast to conventional statistical mechanics, which assigns probabilities to the states of the system, the generalized theory assigns probabilities to the trajectories of the system. The conditional probability of pairs of states at two different times is given by a path integral. We present two simple analytically-tractable examples which illustrate the predicted effect of temperature on the mean trajectories, hysteresis and drift of the system.

Abstract: this work was developed with the aim of evaluating heat tolerance in a representative sample of ex situ preserved tomato (solanum l. section lycopersicon subsection lycopersicon) germplasm in cuban collections and identifying the most tolerant accessions to be used in plant breeding programs. thus, fruit set percentage was evaluated over the optimal and heat-stressing (spring-summer) crop periods for calculating the following stress criteria: stress susceptibility index (ise); stress tolerance value (tol), stress tolerance index (ite), stress geometric fruit set (fge) and relative tolerance index (it). thus, 122 accessions were classified for their plant heat tolerance based on fruit set percentage in spring-summer sowings, besides the relationship among tolerance indexes was performed through biplot analysis. regarding the germplasm evaluated, there were accessions with high fruit set percentages within the spring-summer period, indicating that the ex situ preserved germplasm in cuba has heat tolerant accessions, which can be used in plant breeding programs to obtain good-performing varieties and hybrids under these conditions.

Abstract: the main characteristics of a new terrestrial orchid genotype obtained in cuba by modifications taken place during in vitro culture of spathoglottis plicata var. rosa seeds are presented. lorita has white sepals and petals, a distinctive characteristic from its donating genotype. this new species will make the environment more beautiful and it is a valuable contribution to cuban ornamental agriculture.

Abstract: the objective of this article is to analyze the populist phenomenon and its relationship with democracy in latin america. a theoretical-conceptual review permits placing the origin of populism and democracy historically among the stages of constructing the state in the region. concepts of populism and democracy for latin america are explained. it was found that there are characteristics belonging to populism and democracy; characteristics corresponding to the first, as well as its values, are contrary to democracy. the conclusion is that it is necessary to build democracy based on agreements and values that cannot hide behind movements and leaderships that are doubtful for the region.

Abstract: treatment of heart failure has been successfully target biologically, to counteract deleterious effects resulting from neuroendocrine activation, with the use of several agents (e.g., angiotensine-converting enzyme inhibitors, beta-adrenergic receptor blockers, spironolactone), that provide benefical effects, demonstrated in multicentric trials in controlled populations. however, this mid-term benefit, becomes less effective with time, resulting in progression of the disease to terminal stages and death. the purpose of this paper is to review other pathophysiologic pathways and the potential application of preventive measures to be incorporated in the standardized treatment of heart failure.
