Abstract: There is consistent empirical support that demonstrates the relationship between phonological deficits of developmental dyslexics and their reading difficulties. However, the morphological skills—which also play an important role in the development of alphabetic writing—are seldom investigated among children and adolescents with dyslexia. The focus of this study was to analyse reading patterns according to the dual route model and verify the performance of each subtype of dyslexic in tests of morphological awareness. Participants were nine students classified as surface or phonological dyslexics through their performance in an isolated words-reading task. Four tests were applied to the participants to assess their knowledge of derivational morphology, and two tests focused on their knowledge of inflectional morphology. The hypothesis that guided this research was that students with different reading patterns would also present different performances on morphological tests. This hypothesis was confirmed only for derivational morphology, in which a higher performance was observed among participants with phonological dyslexia. It is concluded that metamorphological skills may serve as facilitators of reading in students with developmental dyslexia, and a focus on the development of these skills is suggested as a strategy to promote the reading skills of these students.

Abstract: Food by-products containing bioactive substances, such as phenolic compounds, have garnered attention due to the possibility to increase the value of what would otherwise be considered residue. The present work sought to evaluate the extraction of phenolic compounds and their bioaccessibility from pinhão “comum” (Araucaria angustifolia var. angustifolia) and pinhão “macaco” (Araucaria angustifolia var. indehiscens) cooking water extracts during in vitro simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Our findings indicate that changes occurred depending on the type of extract and the gastrointestinal step. Although both of the evaluated pinhão extracts displayed bioaccessible phenolic compounds, the gradual bioaccessibility decrease of pinhão “macaco” extract during in vitro simulated gastrointestinal condition steps, characterizes this extract as the one with the best functional property. The functional property is related to antioxidant properties which are able to generate protective effects against various diseases.

Acta Botanica Brasilica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33062010000300027
Abstract: the monimiaceae is represented in the neotropical region by six genera. macropeplus perkins is a brazilian genus comprising four species restricted to high-montane atlantic forest areas, which have not been properly examined from the anatomical point of view. this study characterizes the anatomical structure and histochemical aspects of the leaves of macropeplus dentatus and m. ligustrinus, and adds to our taxonomic knowledge ofthe genus. the individuals studied were collected in the serra dos órg?os national park and in the cara?a natural park in southeastern brazil. among the characteristics common to the two species, hypostomatic leaves, dorsiventral structure, paracytic stomata, a subepidermal layer, collateral vascular system in the form of an arc in the petiole, semicraspedobrochidodromous venation, and the presence of prismatic crystals were registered. intracellular metabolites, such as phenolic compounds, lipids and mucilage, were identified. the petiole shape, occurrence and distribution of secretory cells and brachysclereids, in association with other morphological features, were relevant to species identification.

Ciência Animal Brasileira , 2009,
Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate some stress parameters of horses submitted to competitions of “vaquejada” and inherent to ambient conditions of these places of competition. The experiment was carried out in the city of Mossoró-RN, using ten crossbred Quarter Horses, six females and four castrated males, aging from six to eleven years, body weight from 358 to 450 kg and height of 135 to 150 cm. Blood samples were collected at two moments: in the bay, in the morning with animals at rest (M1), the second immediately after race “vaquejada” (M2). The heart rate, the respiratory frequency and the retal temperature were evaluated immediately before the blood collections. All the clinical and biochemical parameters presented significant difference (P <0.05) between the evaluated moments, except total proteins and creatin kinase. All hemogram parameters, except mean corpuscular volume and number of eosinophils and monocytes, were also affected. Thus, it is feasible to suggest that equines evaluated during the “vaquejada” presented physical, biochemical and hematological alterations in result of stress associated with physical exercise, lack of a routine adjusted by training, and inhospitable ambient conditions “vaquejada” locales. KEY WORDS: Animal welfare, horses, sports.

Cordova, Caio Mauricio Mendes de;Cunha, Regina Ayr Flório da;
Jornal Brasileiro de Patologia e Medicina Laboratorial , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-24442002000200007
Abstract: in this work the prevalence of three mycoplasma species recently identified as human pathogens was investigated: m. genitalium, involved in cases of non-gonococcal urethritis, and m. fermentans and m. penetrans, isolated from immunosupressed individuals, and the 2 species more frequently isolated from the urogenital tract: m. hominis and u. urealyticum. studied groups were composed by 110 patients with symptoms of urethritis (group a) and 106 hiv-1-infected individuals (group b). m. genitalium was detected in 10.9% of the urethral swab samples from the group a, and in 1.9% of the urethral swab samples and 0.9% of the urine samples from the group b. m. fermentans was detected in 0.9% and 5.7% of the urethral swab samples from the groups a and b, respectively. m. penetrans was detected in 6.6% of the urine samples only from the group b. m. hominis and u. urealyticum presented infection rates of 0.9% and 14.5% in the group a, and of 7.5% and 18.9% in the group b, respectively. the relevant prevalence of infection by these new species, as compared to the better known mycoplasmas of the genitourinary tract, suggest that the role of these microorganisms in the field of std and hiv infection may be underestimated in our population.
