Diálogos , 2010, DOI: 10.4025/dialogos.v10i2.97
Abstract: This article concerns Luis A. de Herrera’s works (1873-1959, Uruguayan) on the Paraguayan War. During the first decades of the 20th century, this author was one of the leading figures of the movement of historical revisionism, formed around this event. He was at the same time a historian and a representative of a political party. His father had been one of the main uruguayan diplomatic dignitaries in Paraguay before that conflict. For the political party to which Herrera did belonged, the war remained associated with the exclusion from the political power. The narrative of the conflict proposed by this author has been perceived by some of his contemporaries, in Paraguay as well as in Uruguay, as a kind of restitution of the memory of the defeated. We explore the different discursive formations of the Herrera’s proposition, from a point of view that takes into account the modalities of production and reception of his work. From 5% to 40% of patients with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis, and increasing evidence indicates an association with other systemic manifestations, including cardiovascular disease and the metabolic syndrome. In psoriatic disease, there is a need for development of biomarkers for assessment of disease severity, for prediction of the outcome of therapeutic interventions, and for distinction between the different clinical variants of the disease. A field of great importance is identification of biomarkers for prediction of development of comorbidities, such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and the metabolic syndrome. Genetic determinants of psoriasis and their products not only give an important insight into the pathogenesis of the disease, but may also function as markers of risk for developing cutaneous psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. So far, there are limited validation data to support the use of candidate biomarkers in clinical practice. Here we review the data from several studies on some of the most promising candidate biomarkers for cutaneous psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, for the detection of systemic inflammation, and for use as endpoints for therapeutic interventions. Attention is focused on the molecules that take part in the interplay giving rise to psoriasis and on gene products that may represent a link between predisposing genetic factors and the immune and inflammatory processes involved in pathogenesis of the disease. Finally, we provide an overview on how biomarkers can offer insights into the pathogenesis and natural history of psoriasis.

This paper deals with the interactions between the works of a historian and their context of production through the analysis of the case of Luis Alberto de Herrera (1873-1959), writer, historian and Uruguayan politician. Like many other public figures of the same period, this author has associated a retrospective reflection with a diagnosis of the current events of his country and he has extended his overall view towards larger geographical spaces. Besides, he has pursued an intense activity in the realm of public affaires. Thus, his intellectual career and his political propositions have intertwined many times during the years of his activity without, however, any of them being dependent of the other. Our perspective intends to highlight not only the relationships between these two levels but also their spaces of possible autonomy, their gaps, tensions and conflicts. Herrera’s case is here examined as a form of a broader interrogation over the conditions of exercise concerning the intellectual activity of his time.

Light propagation in dielectric materials

Physics , 2015,
Abstract: We present a pedagogic derivation of the electromagnetic field established in a dielectric material by an impinging external field. We consider the problem from the point of view of the physical mechanism involved at the microscopic level. The internal field emerges when the material is thought of as an assembly of atoms in vacuum, each of them being polarized by the external incident field and by the re-radiated fields of all the other polarized atoms of the material. In this way, each atom becomes itself a source of secondary radiation that adds and interferes with all the other internal fields (including the internal extension of the externally impinging field), contributing to build up the total internal field within the dielectric material as well as the externally scattered field. This picture naturally leads to a connection between the microscopic properties of the material and its index of refraction, that describes the dielectric response to the applied electromagnetic field. Calculations also show that the incident radiation is extinguished inside the dielectric by an equal but opposite field generated by the total induced polarization currents, and is substituted by a macroscopic electric field which propagates with the new speed c/n.
Consistency Analysis of Sensor Data Distribution
Mauro Femminella,Gianluca Reali
Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: In this paper we analyze the probability of consistency of sensor data distribution systems (SDDS), and determine suitable evaluation models. This problem is typically difficult, since a reliable model taking into account all parameters and processes which affect the system consistency is unavoidably very complex. The simplest candidate approach consists of modeling the state sojourn time, or holding time, as memoryless, and resorting to the well known solutions of Markovian processes. Nevertheless, it may happen that this approach does not fit with some working conditions. In particular, the correct modeling of the SDDS dynamics requires the introduction of a number of parameters, such as the packet transfer time or the packet loss probability, the value of which may determine the suitability of unsuitability of the Markovian model. Candidate alternative solutions include the Erlang phase-type approximation of nearly constant state holding time and a more refined model to account for overlapping events in semi-Markov processes.

Abstract: Initial teacher education is not enough for the provision of all the knowledge that teachers needs for the development of their educational practice. Thus, other formative spaces and times such as continuing education are considered essential to subsidy teachers practice. This article reports a study that aimed at offering contributions in the search of new formative spaces though the investigation of teachers in the context of Distance Education. The study started with the following research question: What are the limitations and possibilities of a distance continuing education via internet to teachers of the fi rst years of Basic Education? A study was carried out at distance in a telematic learning environment via the Portal for Teachers (from the Federal University of S o Carlos – UFSCar) through MOODLE platform, which is designed for beginning teachers. The investigation, which adopted a methodological model called constructive-collaborative, revealed among other issues that the formative process investigated contributed to the teachers involved in the research – intervention, offering positive subsidies for teachers′ pedagogical practice.Resumo: O período inicial de forma o docente é insufi ciente para oferecer todos os conhecimentosde que um professor necessita para o desenvolvimento de sua prática educativa.
