Abstract: Coaxial electrospinning process was used to produce biodegradable membranes made of coreshell fibers of a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) shell and a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) core. Scanning electron microscopy analyses of these structures showed that the PLA shell can present certain porosity depending on the process condition. FTIR-ATR and contact angle measurements also suggested imprisonment of the PVA core within the PLA shell. This type of structure was also confirmed by means of transmissions electron microscopy. The morphology of these fibers was dependent on the flow rate of both core and shell solutions, and homogeneous and smooth surface was only attained when the flow rate of the external PLA solution was 4 times the flow rate of the internal PVA solution. The increase in the PLA solution flow rate increases the diameter of the core-shell fiber which reaches up to 1.7 μm. Nevertheless, fibers with smaller average diameter could also be produced (200 nm). These core-shell fibers presented improved hydrophilicity as compared with monolithic PLA fibers.

Todos os domínios do Componente Saúde Física (CSF) do SF-36 apresentaram escores significativamente menores no grupo CEAP 4, 5, 6 (p<0,05), representando maior comprometimento físico e funcional. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the quality of life (QOL) of patients with chronic venous disease (CVD) and to analyze the relationship between QOL and disease severity. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 50 participants with a diagnosis of CVD. The participants were classified according to disease severity using the CEAP clinical classification (Clinical manifestations, Etiological factors, Anatomical distribution of disease, Pathophysiological findings). They were then divided into two groups: CEAP 1, 2 and 3 (less clinically compromised) and CEAP 4, 5 and 6 (more clinically compromised). QOL was evaluated using the SF-36 questionnaire. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the SF-36 scores between the groups. The Spearman correlation was used to evaluate the association between QOL and the CEAP. Differences were considered statistically significant with p < 0.05. The SPSS statistical

Abstract: Following the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm R ntgen and Max von Laue’s discovery of X-ray diffraction by crystals, William and Lawrence Bragg made it possible to calculate the positions of the atoms within a crystal from the way in which an X-ray beam is diffracted by a crystal lattice. Since then, several researchers have applied this powerful technique in the study of many molecules of life, such as proteins, vitamins and hormones. In this interdisciplinary field, two women played a very important role, viz. Dorothy Hodgkin (Nobel Prize, 1964) and Rosalind Franklin. Nowadays, Ada Yonath (Nobel Prize, 2009) follows a similar line of research. We will emphasize the extraordinary work of these scientists.

Abstract: objectives: to evaluate the quality of life (qol) of patients with chronic venous disease (cvd) and to analyze the relationship between qol and disease severity. methods: this was a cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 50 participants with a diagnosis of cvd. the participants were classified according to disease severity using the ceap clinical classification (clinical manifestations, etiological factors, anatomical distribution of disease, pathophysiological findings). they were then divided into two groups: ceap 1, 2 and 3 (less clinically compromised) and ceap 4, 5 and 6 (more clinically compromised). qol was evaluated using the sf-36 questionnaire. the mann-whitney u test was used to compare the sf-36 scores between the groups. the spearman correlation was used to evaluate the association between qol and the ceap. differences were considered statistically significant with p < 0.05. the spss statistical software version 16.0 was used for the analyses. results: seventy-four percent of the sample was female. the mean age was significantly higher (p<0.001) among participants classified as ceap 4, 5 and 6 (56.6±10.3) than among those classified as ceap 1, 2 and 3 (40.6±10.7). all the domains of the physical component of the sf-36 presented significantly lower scores in the ceap 4, 5 and 6 group (p<0.05), thus showing greater physical and functional impairment. only the domains of the physical component presented statistically significant negative correlations with the ceap. conclusions: the physical and functional characteristics were more impaired, especially in the more severe forms of cvd. these findings may contribute to a better understanding of the effects of cvd on qol and better management of therapeutic interventions in this population.

Abstract: heat concentration from wood cutting process promotes the tool premature wear, with consequent effect on the surface processed material, causing burnt areas as well as provoking larger superficial roughness than observed in machining process with absence of accumulated heat. the objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of cutting tool refrigeration during wood machining. the adopted mechanism was the use of pressurized carbon dioxide in fog form applied directly in the cutting area as a refrigeration method. the test was performed using eucalyptus grandis and as cutting tool, a circular saw. to evaluate the wood final surface the following parameters were adopted; superficial roughness and occurrence of surface carbonization. the results showed that carbon dioxide applied in fog form, even at the smallest level (15g min-1), avoided the superficial carbonization of the processed material, as well as reduced the values of superficial roughness.

Abstract: wood has always been an important material for the civil construction industry and for furniture manufactures. nevertheless, brazil has been roted for its indiscriminate deforestation and lack of preoccupation in preservation and reclamation of the native species. the reason for this deforestation is due to several factors, among them the lack of technology in the wood industry. on top of that, the lack of knowledge of the material properties induce the users to utilise always the same species until its exhaustion. to remedy this it is necessary to promote the use of reforestation wood. the challenge is to know its characteristics and applications. the proposition of this work was to evaluate the ultrasonic methodology as a way to determine the mechanical properties of reforestation wood for classification purposes. the correlation between the results obtained in bending static tests in ultrasonic tests, using eucalyptus citriodora and pinus elliotti was verified. the results show that this methodology can be used in evaluation of structural pieces and indicate the viability of this method for wood classification.

Abstract: this paper develops and presents a model aimed at explaining the differences of price among several wine brands and tests innovative variables. moreover, the data is analysed with partial least squares, which is particularly useful for exploratory research. the model was firstly developed by exploring a sample of portuguese brands and after it was validated in a new sample, including wines from spain, portugal, argentina, chile and others. it shows that intrinsic quality is a relevant variable in an international setting and that the origin of the wines only explains differences in price in very specific cases. as far as portuguese wines are concerned, it was also possible to compare two kinds of evaluators of intrinsic quality - professional and amateurs tasters - and their differences were accordingly recorded. in conclusion, this paper contributes to undo current myths about the positioning of those brands and origins (representing the new world and the old world) regarding their prices and intrinsic quality. lastly, it becomes clear that intrinsic quality (which is measured by blind tests) only explains a fairly small proportion of the price variations.

Abstract: Lise Meitner was a pioneer. Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1878, of Jewish ancestry but converted to Protestantism, shy but with strong professional connections and the pleasure of teamwork, she studied physics "seriously". She overpassed the Great War and, in a first breath, she gave us protactinium and false transuranium elements. In a second breath, she gave us the interpretation of nuclear fission. She overpassed World War II. No, she said, I did not design any atomic bomb
