Abstract: In this paper we investigate anomalous diffusion coupled with linear convection, using fractional calculus to describe the anomalous associated memory effects in diffusive term. We get an explicit travelling wave solution, wavefront, with finite propagation. We comment the properties of the solution, including the stationary case.
Metabolic Syndrome in Schizophrenia: A Non systematic Review

Abstract: Background: The link between mental illness and metabolic disturbances has been recognized since the beginning of the last century. The debate concerning medical morbidity in schizophrenia intensified during the last twenty years, especially after the introduction of atypical antipsychotics. Aims: To highlight some features of the metabolic syndrome in this population, specifically epidemiological data, underlying mechanisms and antipsychotic therapy. Methods: Non systematic review of literature. Results and Conclusions: Despite the different criteria used for the definition of metabolic syndrome, it is clear today that the schizophrenic population has the highest rate of metabolic syndrome. Additionally, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in this population demonstrates a geographical distribution similar to the general population. Although it hasn’t been recognized for years, schizophrenic patients’ vulnerability to develop metabolic disturbances isn’t entirely related to antipsychotic therapy. Actually, it results from an interaction of multiple factors, including hereditary, genetic, biochemical and environmental ones (which include antipsychotic therapy). Moreover, they are not exclusively explained by weight gain. Metabolic disturbances are one of the main concerns related to general psychopharmacology. The differences between typical and atypical antipsychotics in terms of metabolic syndrome are not completely established. However, clozapine and olanzapine are recognized to have the worst metabolic profile, amongst all atypical antipsychotics.

Abstract: Objective: Drug resistance is considered one of the main threats for tuberculosis control. Our aim was to identify risk factors for drug resistance in tuberculosis patients in the Northern Portugal. Study Design and Methods: Retrospective case-control study. The medical records and drug susceptibility test data from TB patients diagnosed between 31 March 2009 and 1 April 2010 were examined. We enrolled 119 patients with any drug resistance to first line anti-TB drugs and 238 with drug-susceptible TB, matched by age group. Variables analyzed included: gender, country of origin, employment situation, site of disease, previous treatment, presence of diabetes mellitus, HIV infection, alcohol abuse, intravenous drug use, abuse of other drugs and smoking habits. Multivariate conditional logistic regression was used to identify independent predictors for drug-resistant TB. Results: Diabetes mellitus [adjusted odds ratio (OR): 3.54; 95% CI: 1.45 - 8.66], intravenous drug use (OR: 4.77; 95% CI: 1.24 - 18.32) and previous TB treatment (OR: 2.48; 95% CI: 1.12 - 5.49) were found to be risk factors for drug-resistant disease development. Conclusions: Diabetes mellitus, prior tuberculosis treatment, and intravenous drug use were risk factors for drug-resistant disease. The association between diabetes and drug-resistant TB should be further explored. Identifying clinical predictors of drug resistance can allow prompt identification of patients at risk for drug-resistant TB.
Cultivos primarios de células endoteliales aisladas de cordón umbilical humano: un modelo biológico para el estudio de los mecanismos de infección por enterococos

Abstract: although enterococcus bacteria are normal human intestinal flora, they rank as the third most common pathogen involved in hospital acquired infections. generally, these bacteria are considered extracellular pathogens; however, an increasing number of reports indicate invasiveness to epithelial cell lines and macrophages. despite their importance as nosocomial infection agents in patients suffering bacteremias and endocarditis, their interaction with endothelial cells has not been fully described. herein, the nosocomial enterococcus faecalis isolate ef2890 from a hospitalized patient was exposed to cultured human venous endothelial cells from the umbilical chord. when the primary cell cultures were inoculated with ef2890 and treated with bactericidal antibiotics to kill extracellular and adhered bacteria, intracellular bacteria were recovered and plated 4 h post-infection. these observations indicate that cell cultures provide a valuable biological model to study interactions between endothelium and enterococci.
Characterization of maize populations in different environmental conditions by means of Three-Mode Principal Components Analysis

Abstract: characterization of 31 native populations of maize conserved at the germplasm bank of the pnla pergamino experimental station, argentina, was achieved by evaluating 10 quantitative attributes in two different environmental situations. the experimental design generated three-way or three-mode data, repeated observations of a set of attributes for a set of individuals in different conditions. the information was displayed in a three-dimensional array, and the structure of the data was explored using three-mode principal component analysis, the tucker-2 model. a group of populations was identified that displayed homogeneous behavior in the two environments with respect to the following traits: ear length, prolificacy, grains per meter, yield and 1000 kernel weight. however, another group of populations displayed opposite behavior for the traits of plant height and ear insertion height in the different environment conditions and is indicative of the existence of genotype-environment interaction. in conclusion, three-mode principal component analysis is an important tool for characterizing plant genetic resources when their phenotypic values are likely to be affected by environmental conditions.

Abstract: aspect-oriented requirement engineering provides approaches for eliciting and specifying the concerns and crosscutting concerns in the early stages of software development. in this paper, we present a case study in order to assess a model of the aspect-oriented multidimensional separation of concerns. with the case study, we review their features for elicitation, analysis and traceability of requirements, as well as some limitations of the model and how it can be adapted to the development process. also, we discuss some issues that might endorse the development and evolution of this model.

Abstract: La Psicologia en Paraguay tuvo sus origines en la Educación, desde el siglo XIX en la curricula de la secundaria se tenia la materia de Psicología. Recién en la década de los 60 surge la formación universitaria, tanto en la Universidad Nacional como la Universidad Católica. Con la apertura democrática en los a os 90, se abrieron otras universidades públicas y privadas para la formación de psicólogos. Las grandes desigualdades sociales en América Latina y los problemas sociales convocan a la Psicologia a generar conocimientos acordes a la realidad latinoamericano. Se constituyen como desafíos fundamentales para la Psicología en Paraguay la formación con calidad y la investigación, estos dos temas surgen como emergentes para avanzar en la integración de la Psicología Paraguaya a la Psicologia Regional y a otros ámbitos del conocimiento.

Abstract: La Ingeniería de Rrequisitos Orientada a Aspectos provee enfoques para la elicitación y especificación de los asuntos y asuntos transversales en etapas tempranas de desarrollo de software. Este artículo presenta un caso de estudio para evaluar un modelo de la separación multidimensional de asuntos orientados a aspectos. Con el caso de estudio, se revisan sus características para la elicitación, análisis y trazabilidad de requisitos, así como algunas limitaciones del modelo y cómo este puede ser adaptado al proceso de desarrollo. Abstract: macrophages serve as an effective component of innate immunity in their ability to recognize, engulf and kill potential pathogens. they also coordinate additional host responses by synthesizing a range of inflammatory mediators that can activate the adaptive immune response and establish protective immunity. although they are a key component of mammalian defense system, macrophage activity is not always beneficial to the host. the centrality of macrophages in disease processes makes macrophage regulation a major target in the prevention, control and cure of inflammatory processes. consequently, macrophage-restricted genes may be crucial targets for therapeutic intervention. a review is presented of the use of large-scale cdna microarrays to compare macrophage inflammatory genes differentially expressed in two distinct macrophages populations -bone marrow derived macrophages (bmm) and inflammatory thioglycolate-elicited peritoneal macrophages (tepm)- to non-macrophage cell populations consisting of primary embryonic fibroblast and spleen non-adherent cells. expression profiles indicate that macrophage inflammatory genes are associated with expected functional categories, such as lysosomal degradation, phagocytosis, host defense and homeostasis.
