Use of Bacteriocin Producing Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis LABW4 to Prevent Listeria monocytogenes Induced Spoilage of Meat  [PDF]

Abstract: A bacteriocin producing strain of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis LABW4 was isolated from naturally fermented milk product which exhibited strong antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes MTCC657, a food spoilage psychrophilic organism. Both cell free and heat killed supernatants of LABW4 were effective to produce zones of inhibition against L. monocytogenes in vitro. The antibacterial metabolite(s) of LABW4 showed strong cidal effect on the growth of L. monocytogenes. Meat samples, mixed with heat killed supernatant of LABW4 when inoculated with Listeria, remain fresh up to 25 days in refrigerated condition whereas spoilage started immediately after 24 hours of inoculation for control sets. Enhancement of Lactate dehydrogenase of L. monocytogenes upon treatment with LABW4 cell free supernatant suggested its lytic mode of action. Cell lysis or degradations were also supported by scanning electron micrograph of treated cells.
Transverse vibration of spinning disk with attached distributed patch and discrete point masses using finite element analysis

Abstract: Free and forced transverse vibration characteristics of a thin spinning disc attached to a rigid core have been investigated by finite element analysis using ANSYS software. The effect of discrete point masses and patches of distributed masses attached at the periphery of the plate on free and forced vibration behavior of a spinning disc has been investigated. Discrete point masses and distributed patch masses have been placed at higher strain regions to look into its influence on the natural frequencies, mode shapes and response of the plate to external excitation. Results for eight and sixteen point masses and patches on the vibration characteristics have been compared. It has been observed that discrete patches and point masses have significant influence on the modal frequencies and these can also act as dynamic vibration absorbers in reducing vibration of a spinning disc. It has also been shown that discrete patches of piezoelectric patches can also be used to actively control vibration of the spinning disc.

Abstract: A previously tested differential equation method for generating low temperature series expansion for diagonal spin-spin correlation functions in the d=2 Ising model is extended to generate the non-universal terms for arbitrary separation of the spins. Abstract: Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) with probiotic potentials isolated from fermented food of Indian origin were investigated for antioxidant activities. The antioxidant potential of the Cell Free Extracts (CFEs) of the nine probiotic isolates (GS3, GS4, GS7, GS9, GS14, GS16, GS17, GS20 and GS21) were investigated through different assays namely the Reducing power, DPPH free radical scavenging and β-Carotene bleaching assay. The Cell Free Extracts of isolates demonstrated reducing activity in the range of 60 to 92.66 μg/μl ascorbic acid equivalence; with the maximum activity being observed with the CFE of Pediococcus GS4 isolate (92.66μg/μl). DPPH free radical scavenging activity of the CFE of isolates was observed in the range of 48.67-91.26%. The β-Carotene bleaching assay was performed on CFE of isolates showing maximum activity in the above two assays. 150 μl of CFE of GS4 exhibited the maximum zone of colour retention of 22.00±1.000 mm and Butylated hydroxy toluene (1mg/100 μl) as positive control exhibited an average zone of colour retention of 27.00±0.577mm. 150 μl CFE of GS17 exhibited lower antioxidant activity in comparison to CFE of GS4 with the average zone of colour retention being 20.30±0.577mm. This extends the functional use of Probiotics as nutraceutical with antioxidant potential and may find therapeutic application for degenerative diseases related to ageing.
MIRROR SYMMETRY IN THE FEW ANYON SPECTRA IN A HARMONIC OSCILLATOR POTENTIAL

Abstract: We find that the energy spectra of four and five anyons in a harmonic potential exhibit some mirror symmetric (reflection symmetric about the semionic statistics point $\theta=\pi/2$) features analogous to the mirror symmetry in the two and three anyon spectra. However, since the $\ell=0$ sector remains non-mirror symmetric, the fourth and fifth virial coeffients do not reflect this symmetry.
Fractional Quantum Hall Effect States as Exact Ground States

Abstract: We construct many particle Hamiltonians for which the Laughlin and Jain wavefunctions are exact ground states. The Hamiltonians involve fermions in a magnetic field and with inter-particle interactions. For the Laughlin wave-functions,the interactions involve two- and three-body correlations similar to the Chern-Simons interactions, whereas for the projected Jain wave-functions, N-body interactions (which cannot be explicitly written down in general) are involved.
Exactly Solvable Models in Arbitrary Dimensions

Abstract: We construct a new class of quasi-exactly solvable many-body Hamiltonians in arbitrary dimensions, whose ground states can have any correlations we choose. Some of the known correlations in one dimension and some recent novel correlations in two and higher dimensions are reproduced as special cases. As specific interesting examples, we also write down some new models in two and higher dimensions with novel correlations.
