An effective-charge model for the trapping of impurities of fluids in channels with nanostructured walls

Abstract: We present model equations for the trapping and accumulation of particles in a cylindrical channel with nanostructured inner walls when a fluid passes through, carrying a moderate load of impurities. The basic ingredient of the model is the introduction of a phenomenological ‘effective-charge density’ of the walls, related to the electrical charges exposed in the nanotexture. The effective charge is gradually reduced as the flow runs through the channel and the trapped impurities cover the internal walls. Based on the proposed equations, the position and time dependence of the areal density of trapped impurities, and the filtration performance, may be calculated. It is proposed that experimentally testing these results may help to understand the enhanced trapping capability observed in many diverse nanotextured channel structures.

Abstract: RESUMEN: El artículo presentado pertenece a un proyecto más amplio sobre el estudio de las catedrales espa olas. En este caso se seguirá el proceso evolutivo que abarca el periodo Barroco, desde principios del siglo XVII hasta finales del siglo XVIII. El estudio se centra en las actuaciones arquitectónicas que se llevan a cabo en algunas catedrales espa olas: Zamora, Murcia, La Seo de Zaragoza, Santiago de Compostela, etc. Se dividen las actuaciones en tres bloques: las de justificación religiosa, las que presentan una funcionalidad directa a las nuevas necesidades del culto y de un cabildo cada vez más refinado y preparado intelectualmente, y, por último, las obras de carácter representativo volcadas hacia el exterior del edificio: fachadas, cierres de claustro y torres. De estos tres bloques el que se sigue aquí es el perteneciente a las fachadas, pero sin renunciar a ninguno de los otros apartados. ABSTRACT: This article is part of a broader project on the study of Spanish cathedrals. Here, we folbow the process of development that covers the Baroque period, from the beginning of the seventeenth century to the end of the eighteenth century. The study focuses on architectural activity carried out on some Spanish cathedrals: Zamora, Murcia, La Seo of Zaragoza, Santiago de Compostela, etc. The activities are divided into three bocks: those with a religious justification, those that have direct functionality for the new needs of the liturgy and an evermore refined and intellectually prepared chapter and, finally, works of a representative nature related to the outside of the building: fa ades, closings of cloister and towers. Of these three blocks, the one followed here is that of the fa ades, without renouncing the other sections.
On the energy saved by interlayer interactions in the superconducting state of cuprates

Abstract: A Ginzburg-Landau-like functional is proposed reproducing the main low-energy features of various possible high-Tc superconducting mechanisms involving energy savings due to interlayer interactions. The functional may be used to relate these savings to experimental quantities. Two examples are given, involving the mean-field specific heat jump at Tc and the superconducting fluctuations above Tc. Comparison with existing data suggests, e.g., that the increase of Tc due to the so-called interlayer tunneling (ILT) mechanism of interlayer kinetic-energy savings is negligible in optimally-doped Bi-2212.
Introduction to the AdS/CFT correspondence

Abstract: This is a pedagogical introduction to the AdS/CFT correspondence, based on lectures delivered by the author at the third IDPASC school. Starting with the conceptual basis of the holographic dualities, the subject is developed emphasizing some concrete topics, which are discussed in detail. A very brief introduction to string theory is provided, containing the minimal ingredients to understand the origin of the AdS/CFT duality. Other topics covered are the holographic calculation of correlation functions, quark-antiquark potentials and transport coefficients.

By solving the proposed equations, three regimes are predicted for the channel: a linear or clean-filter regime, a logarithmic or half-saturation regime, and the saturation limit. It is proposed that experimentally testing these regimes may help to understand the enhanced trapping capability observed in many diverse nanotextured channel structures.

Abstract: in this work, the effect of operating conditions during calcium pretreatment on the calcium uptake and the compression resistance of papaya bits in syrup was studied. the papaya fruit was cut into cylinders of approximately 10 mm in length and 25 mm in diameter. an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide was used as impregnation medium. different conditions of calcium pre-treatment were applied. a three-factor two-level factorial design was chosen to evaluate the combined effect of three independent impregnation variables: concentration solution, temperature and impregnation time. the system response was measured in terms of calcium gain in the fruit and mechanical property values of processed food. the results showed that the solution concentration and the impregnation time were the most relevant variables on the hardness of papaya in syrup. the greatest calcium content (116.7 mg/100 g fresh fruit) was reached by fruit impregnation in 1.5% ca(ho)2-solution at 40°c for 4.5 h.
Supersymmetric Intersections of M-branes and pp-waves

Abstract: We study supersymmetric intersections of M2 and M5 branes with different pp-waves of M-theory. We consider first M-brane probes in the background of pp-waves and determine under which conditions the embedding is supersymmetric. We particularize our formalism to the case of pp-waves with 32, 24 and 20 supersymmetries. We also construct supergravity solutions for the brane-wave system. Generically these solutions are delocalised along some directions transverse to the brane and preserve the same number of supersymmetries as in the brane probe approach.
Universal properties of cold holographic matter

Abstract: We study the collective excitations of holographic quantum liquids formed in the low energy theory living at the intersection of two sets of D-branes. The corresponding field theory dual is a supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with massless matter hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of the gauge group which generically live on a defect of the unflavored theory. Working in the quenched (probe) approximation, we focus on determining the universal properties of these systems. We analyze their thermodynamics, the speed of first sound, the diffusion constant, and the speed of zero sound. We study the influence of temperature, chemical potential, and magnetic field on these quantities, as well as on the corresponding collisionless/hydrodynamic crossover. We also generalize the alternative quantization for all conformally $AdS_4$ cases and study the anyonic correlators.
