Anti HIV-1 and antimicrobial activity of the leaf extracts of Calotropis procera

Abstract: Calotropis procera R.Br. (Asclepiadiaceae) is an important medicinal plant whose leaves and roots have multiple uses. The plant is a rich source of many bioactive compounds which are of medicinal importance. The study was undertaken to investigate the anti HIV-1 and antibacterial activities of the crude leaf extracts of C. procera. Hot water extract was used for evaluating the efficacy against the growth of HIV. Inhibition of p24 antigen′s expression was used as the method for the study. Antibacterial activity was tested against four different bacteria using agar well diffusion method. Zones of inhibition were measured with different concentrations of the extracts and some of them gave better values than the antibiotics used. The results were presented as the average and standard error of triplicate experiments. The statistical significance was checked at P<0.5. A dose-dependent inhibition of the p24 antigen expression was observed and the extract was found to be efficient against HIV-1. Ethyl acetate extract was effective against all the bacteria tested. The results observed support ancient and traditional medicinal values of C. procera.
Bt cotton influencing enzymatic activities under varied soils  [PDF]

Abstract:

The enzymatic activity was evaluated under both Bt and non-Bt systems in varied soil type. The study was conducted during the 2010 wet season (July to December) in a net-house at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences of Banaras Hindu University. It was carried out on three different soil ordersi.e.entisol, inceptisol and alfisol. Bt cotton (cvNCS-138) and its non-transgenic isoline (cvNCS-138) were grown until maturity. A no crop pot was maintained with three replications for all the three soil orders. Study design was a factorial experiment under a completely randomized block design with three replications. The study concludes that soil under Bt cotton cultivar produced significantly higher amount of phosphatase activity than both nonBt and no crop treatments at three growth stages. And the value decreased as the crop growth period advanced. The interaction effect between soil type and Bt-crop was found to be significant in different growth stages throughout the growing season. Results from the study revealed that a significant reduction (9.4%) of the dehydrogenase activity and soil respiration (5%) in the rhizosphere of Bt cotton over non-Bt isoline.

Abstract: A particle moves among the vertices of an $(m+1)$-gon which are labeled clockwise as $0,1,...,m$. The particle starts at 0 and thereafter at each step it moves to the adjacent vertex, going clockwise with a known probability $p$, or counterclockwise with probability $1-p$. The directions of successive movements are independent. What is the expected number of moves needed to visit all vertices? This and other related questions are answered using recursive relations.
Pest and Disease Tolerance in Rice cv Pusa Basmati as Related to Different Locally Available Organic Manures Grown in New Alluvail Region of West Bengal, India

Abstract: Field experiments were carried out to evaluate relative efficacy of organic manures in improving productivity, pest tolerance of rice in lateritic soil. Three commercial manures viz., Processed Municipality Waste (PMW), Vermicompost (VC) and Oil Cake Pellets (OCP) were assessed in relation to Farmyard Manure (FYM) and with Chemical Fertilizer (CF). Among the organic manures tested, FYM produced maximum grain yield. Maximum tolerance to pests and pathogens in terms of per cent affected hills/panicles was observed when manured with VC followed by FYM. Chemical fertilizer showed significantly higher per cent affected hills and plants compared to all other organic manures. Among the commercial manures, PMW emerged as a potential alternative to FYM and VC.

Abstract: Photocatalysis has been predicted as a promising technology for waste water treatment. N-doped zinc oxide has been used as an effective catalyst for carrying out number of chemical reactions, but limited work has been reported on use of N-doped ZnO as photocatalyst. In the present work, the photocatalytic degradation of Azure A was carried out in the presence of N-doped zinc oxide and the progress of the reaction was observed spectrophotometrically. The morphologies and structures of the as-synthesized nanomaterials were investigated by using FT-IR and DRS techniques. On the basis of observations, a tentative mechanism has been proposed for the photocatalytic degradation of dye.
An Efficient and Facile Methodology for Bromination of Pyrimidine and Purine Nucleosides with Sodium Monobromoisocyanurate (SMBI)

Abstract: An efficient and facile strategy has been developed for bromination of nucleosides using sodium monobromoisocyanurate (SMBI). Our methodology demonstrates bromination at the C-5 position of pyrimidine nucleosides and the C-8 position of purine nucleosides. Unprotected and also several protected nucleosides were brominated in moderate to high yields following this procedure.
Entropic Counterpart of Perturbative Einstein Equation

Abstract: Entanglement entropy in a field theory, with a holographic dual, may be viewed as a quantity which encodes the diffeomorphism invariant bulk gravity dynamics. This, in particular, indicates that the bulk Einstein equations would imply some constraints for the boundary entanglement entropy. In this paper we focus on the change in entanglement entropy, for small but arbitrary fluctuations about a given state, and analyze the constraints imposed on it by the perturbative Einstein equations, linearized about the corresponding bulk state. Specifically, we consider linear fluctuations about BTZ black hole in 3 dimension, pure AdS and AdS Schwarzschild black holes in 4 dimensions and obtain a diffeomorphism invariant reformulation of linearized Einstein equation in terms of holographic entanglement entropy. We will also show that entanglement entropy for boosted subsystems provides the information about all the components of the metric with a time index.
An Objective Evaluation Method for Image Restoration

Abstract: Accurate image restoration is of paramount importance for low-level vision, computer vision, and various other fields. Numerous complex restoration algorithms have been stated in the literature. Performance of these restoration algorithms differs with the nature of the image and distortion. These algorithms are evaluated either qualitatively or quantitatively by comparing the restored image with the original image. The practical drawback of this quantitative comparison is the requirement for the original image. In this paper, we propose a measure, with theoretical grounding, to objectively evaluate the restoration algorithms with no knowledge about the original image. This measure analyses the deblurring as well as the denoising nature of the restoration method. The main utility of this measure will be in designing automatic restoration systems. Effectiveness of this measure is substantiated with experimental results.
Role of VAM on growth and phosphorus nutrition of maize with low soluble phosphate fertilization

Abstract: The effect of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) infection on growth and P nutrition in Maize (Zea mays, cv.DDH hybrid) were assessed in Oxisol pot experiment. Maize was grown inoculated with spores of VAM fungi Glomus mosseae or non-inoculated. Low soluble ferrous phosphate (FePO4.4H2O) was added to the mycorrhized and non-micrrohized maized. The dry weight of mycorrhized plants with added phosphate (P) were higher than in mycorrhized plants without added P or non-mycorrhized plants with added P. The amount of P in the soil samples from pots with mycorrhizal plants fertilized with P was evidently smaller than those in samples also fertilized non-mycorrhizal plants. The percentage of P was higher in tissues of fertilized mycorrhial plants than in those mycorrihzed plants without or nonmycorrhized plants with added low-soluble P. These results indicated that plants in VAM symbiosis mobilize P better from low-soluble P than non-mycorrhized plants.
