Abstract: The electrochemical behavior of pure titanium and titanium alloys in a simulated body fluid (normal saline solution) has been tested, and the results have been reported. The significance of the results for dental use has been discussed. The tests also serve as a screening test for the best alloy system for more comprehensive long-term investigations.

Abstract: Dissociated vertical deviation (DVD) is an intermittent anomaly of the non-fixing eye. Although association of DVD with sensory visual deprivation owing to congenital or acquired opacities of the ocular media has been reported, its association with congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy (CHED) has not been reported hitherto. We report a case having a bilateral asymmetric DVD, in a know case of bilateral CHED.
Evaluation of subjective and objective cyclodeviation following oblique muscle weakening procedures

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the subjective and objective cyclodeviational changes following different weakening procedures on superior and inferior oblique muscles Design: Comparative case series Materials and Methods: In a prospective institution based study, 16 cases of A pattern horizontal strabismus having superior oblique overaction were randomized to superior oblique weakening procedures: either silicon expander or translational-recession. Similarly, 20 cases of V pattern horizontal strabismus with inferior oblique overaction were randomized for inferior oblique weakening procedures: either 10 mm Fink′s recession or modified Elliot and Nankin′s anteropositioning. Cyclodeviation was assessed subjectively with the synoptophore and objectively using the fundus photograph before surgery and 3 months postoperatively. Change in cyclodeviation was measured by subjective and objective methods. The index of surgical effect (ISE) was defined as the net torsional change postoperatively. Results: The difference between the extorsional change induced by the two superior oblique procedures, silicone expander (-6°) and translational recession (-11.3°), was statistically significant (P=0.001). Translational recession caused more extorsional change (ISE=296%) than silicone expander surgery (ISE=107%). The two inferior oblique weakening procedures, Fink′s recession (+2.5°) and modified Elliot and Nankin′s anteropositioning (+4.7°) produced equitable amount of intorsional shift with no statistical difference (P=0.93). Objective measurements were significantly more than the subjective measurements. Conclusions: Different weakening procedures on oblique muscles produce different changes in cyclodeviation, which persists even up to 3 months. Subjective cyclodeviation is less than the objective measurements indicating partial compensation by sensorial adaptations.
Corrosion Response of Ti6Al4V and Ti15Mo Dental Implant Alloys in the Presence of Listerine Oral Rinse

Abstract: The influence of a commonly used antibacterial mouth rinse, Listerine, on the corrosion behavior of one of the commonly used titanium alloys Ti6Al4V (two-phase structure, i.e., α and β) and a newer Ti15Mo (single β phase) in normal saline solution has been investigated using electrochemical techniques. Interfacial electrochemical changes occurring at the oxide-solution interface have been analysed using EIS circuit modeling. Listerine acts as a corrosion inhibitor for Ti15Mo alloy and a corrosion promoter for Ti6Al4V alloy. 1. Introduction Listerine is a commonly used mouth rinse with antiplaque, anticaries, and antibacterial properties. It is used in several dental applications following periodontal procedures and routine oral prophylaxis. It was awarded the American Dental Association’s seal of recognition in 1987 for its clinical efficacy in plaque control and gingival improvement [1]. Listerine antiseptic, developed by Warner-Lambert, was the first over-the-counter mouth rinse [2]. Listerine contains different essential oils, which are phenolics such as thymol, eucalyptol, menthol, and methyl salicylate and are known to retard plaque buildup and reduce gingivitis [3–10]. Thymol, eucalyptol, and menthol are known to possess proven antibacterial activity and are found in thyme (Thymus vulgaris), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), and peppermint (Mentha piperita), respectively. Methyl salicylate has anti-inflammatory activity and is found in meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) and willow (Salix spp.) [2]. The effect of Listerine on plaque was ascribed to its bactericidal properties related to the alteration of bacterial cell wall, which has been well documented in vitro and in vivo [11–15]. A newly inserted prosthesis and various surrounding tissues may get exposed to Listerine from minutes to days, depending upon the therapy performed and the local and systemic patient factors. It is thus important to understand the effect of Listerine on the electrochemical and corrosion behavior of titanium alloys in order to predict treatment prognosis. Cestarolli et al. [16] have compared the effect of mouthwashes including Listerine and a simulated body fluid on the corrosion behavior of an Fe-Cr-Ni alloy. The corrosion resistance of this alloy was the highest in the presence of Listerine mouthwash. However, the present study simulates the use of Listerine as an oral prophylactic rinse, in other words, the condition when the concentration of saliva gets altered due to the presence of Listerine in the mouth. Twitter and Polls: Analyzing and estimating political orientation of Twitter users in India General #Elections2014

Abstract: This year (2014) in the month of May, the tenure of the 15th Lok Sabha was to end and the elections to the 543 parliamentary seats were to be held. A whooping $5 billion were spent on these elections, which made us stand second only to the US Presidential elections in terms of money spent. Swelling number of Internet users and Online Social Media (OSM) users could effect 3-4% of urban population votes as per a report of IAMAI (Internet & Mobile Association of India). Our count of tweets related to elections from September 2013 to May 2014, was close to 18.21 million. We analyzed the complete dataset and found that the activity on Twitter peaked during important events. It was evident from our data that the political behavior of the politicians affected their followers count. Yet another aim of our work was to find an efficient way to classify the political orientation of the users on Twitter. We used four different techniques: two were based on the content of the tweets, one on the user based features and another based on community detection algorithm on the retweet and user mention networks. We found that the community detection algorithm worked best. We built a portal to show the analysis of the tweets of the last 24 hours. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first academic pursuit to analyze the elections data and classify the users in the India General Elections 2014.
Study on the use of tobacco among male medical students in Lucknow, India

Abstract: Objectives: Is use of tobacco a major health problem among medical students? To find out the factors associated with the use of tobacco. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was done on 250 undergraduate male medical students using a pre-designed, pre-tested questionnaire to study about the problem and various correlates of the tobacco use. Data was collected and analysed using Excel and SPSS software. Results: Among the tobacco users (28.8%), smoking was found in 87.5% and tobacco chewing in the form of gutka, khaini, gulmanjan (locally available forms of tobacco) in 37.5% as the predominant means of the use of tobacco. The mean age of our sample was 23.5 years. The residential background, i.e., rural or urban, and religion were not significantly associated with the use of tobacco in the present study. Hostellers were found to be more frequent tobacco users as compared to day-scholars. There was a familial aggregation of the use of tobacco. The factor initiating the use of tobacco was usually peer pressure. Conclusion: Tobacco use is a significant problem among the male medical students and we need to take steps to stop its use by them so as to prevent them from being exposed to its hazardous effects. This will also make their role in the advocacy of the smoking cessation activities more trustworthy.
