Jha A,Rahmathulla G,Vaishya S,Walia B
Neurology India , 2007,
Abstract: We present our initial experience with the high field (1.5T) intra-operative magnetic resonance imaging, the operating room set-up, our initial cases, the difficulties we faced and how this tool affected a change in the surgical strategy intra-operatively and finally our results. 11 patients were operated on from June 1st to August 1st 2006 of which there were astrocytomas (7), pituitary adenoma (1), craniopharyngioma (1) and meningiomas (2) Localization and lesion targeting were accurate, intra-operative imaging helped to assess the resection volumes, enable corrections for brain shift, perform further tumor resection at the same sitting and help preserve eloquent cortical areas. Gliomas formed 63.6% of the tumors operated on and in 71.4% of these, our surgical strategy changed intra-operatively. Meningiomas formed 9.1% of the tumors operated and image guidance enabled a minimally invasive approach, although no change in our surgical plan was required. One pituitary adenoma and a craniopharyngioma were also operated on with good outcome.
Simultaneous detection of Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus in human plasma using Taq-man chemistry

Journal of Medical and Allied Sciences , 2011,
Abstract: Designing a rapid, reliable and sensitive assay, for detection of hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus variants by real-time PCR, is challenging at best. A recent approach for quantifying the viral load using the sensitive fluorescence principle, was used in this study. A total of 350 samples were collected from outpatient unit, Center for Liver Research and Diagnostics (CLRD). Complete Human HBV DNA and HCV sequences were obtained from the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI); primers and probes were designed and synthesized from core, surface and x region of Hepatitis B and UTR region of HCV. Real-time based detection was done, using standard kit and in-house generated standards and RT-PCR protocols. A standard curve was generated by using the Smart Cycler II software and serial dilution 102 to 108 of cloned viral regions, the calibration curve was linear in a range from 102 to108 cp/ml for both HBV and HCV, with R2 value of 0.999 and 0.995. Out of 100 predetermined HCV negative samples, 02 samples were found positive with in-house developed RT-PCR assay, the positivity of this sample was confirmed by sequencing the amplified product. Low cost of this assay procedure and précised sample volume will permit the assay to be implemented for routine screening of Hepatitis B and C virus mono-infection and co-infection using Real Time PCR , Nucleic acid Chip technology and Fluorescent End Point detection systems. This assay is reproducible showing limited inter and intra assay variability. Our results correlated well with the standard kit for HBV and HCV virus monitor.

Psyche , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/186214
Abstract: The production of quality mulberry leaf and subsequent production of quality silk is hampered due to the incidence of various insect pests. The present study analyses the population dynamics of Diaphania pulverulentalis (leaf roller), a serious pest of mulberry in a sericulture seed farm. The results indicated that maximum population buildup of the pest was recorded during rainy season. High humidity coinciding with low temperature because of southwest and northeast monsoon was conducive for breeding and multiplication of the pest. Correlation studies revealed that there was a significant negative correlation between increase in temperature and pest infestation. All other weather factors recorded from the study location have a positive correlation with incidence of the pest. The regression model developed also supported the relationship between the pest population buildup and weather factors.

Psyche , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/121234
Abstract: The seasonal differences in the environmental components considerably affect the genotypic expression in the form of phenotypic output of silkworm crop such as cocoon weight, shell weight, and cocoon shell ratio. The variations in the environmental conditions day to day and season to season emphasize the need of management of temperature and relative humidity for sustainable cocoon production. The present review paper discuss in details about the role of temperature and humidity on growth and development of silkworm including recent studies on heat shock protein. Study also discusses the influence of air and light on silkworm development. In addition to this study emphasis on the role of various environmental factors on embryonic development of silkworm egg, nutritional indices of silkworm larva and reproductive potential of silkworm moth. The study also highlights about the care to be required during silkworm spinning and influence of temperature and humidity on post cocoon parameters of silkworm. The study included future strategies to be taken for the management climatic condition for successful cocoon crop. The paper covers 140 references connected with the topic. 1. Introduction Sericulture is the science that deals with the production of silk by rearing of silkworm. Silk is called the queen of textiles due to its glittering luster, softness, elegance, durability, and tensile properties and is discovered in China between 2600 and 2700 BC. Silk originating in the spittle of an insect is a natural fibrous substance and is obtained from pupal nests or cocoons spun by larvae known as silkworm. The silk is preferred over all other types of fibres due to its remarkable properties like water absorbency, heat resistance, dyeing efficiency, and luster. Factors mainly influence the physiology of insects are temperature and humidity. Despite wide fluctuations in their surroundings, insects show a remarkable range of adaptations to fluctuating environmental conditions and maintain their internal temperature and water content within tolerable limits. Adaptation is a complex and dynamic state that widely differs from species to species. Surviving under changing environment in insects depends on dispersal, habitat selection, habitat modification, relationship with water, resistance to cold, diapause and developmental rate, sensitivity to environmental signals, and syntheses of variety of cryoprotectant molecules. The mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) is very delicate, highly sensitive to environmental fluctuations, and unable to survive extreme natural
The Molecular Biology of Brain Metastasis

Journal of Oncology , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/723541
Abstract: Metastasis to the central nervous system (CNS) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with systemic cancers. Various crucial interactions between the brain environment and tumor cells take place during the development of the cancer at its new location. The rapid expansion in molecular biology and genetics has advanced our knowledge of the underlying mechanisms involved, from invasion to final colonization of new organ tissues. Understanding the various events occurring at each stage should enable targeted drug delivery and individualized treatments for patients, with better outcomes and fewer side effects. This paper summarizes the principal molecular and genetic mechanisms that underlie the development of brain metastasis (BrM).

Abstract: Gazanfar Rahmathulla,1 Elizabeth J Hovey,2,3 Neda Hashemi-Sadraei,4 Manmeet S Ahluwalia4 1Department of Neurological Surgery, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, 2Department of Medical Oncology, Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, NSW, Australia; 3School of Medicine, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW, Australia; 4Department of Medical Oncology, Neurological and Taussig Cancer Institutes, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, USA Abstract: High-grade gliomas continue to have dismal prognosis despite advances made in understanding the molecular genetics, signaling pathways, cytoskeletal dynamics, and the role of stem cells in gliomagenesis. Conventional treatment approaches, including surgery, radiotherapy, and cytotoxic chemotherapy, have been used with limited success. Therapeutic advances using molecular targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and others such as dietary treatments have not been able to halt tumor progression and disease-related death. High-grade gliomas (World Health Organization grades III/IV) are histologically characterized by cellular and nuclear atypia, neoangiogenesis, and necrosis. The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor, a molecular mediator, plays a key role in vascular proliferation and tumor survival. Targeting vascular endothelial growth factor has demonstrated promising results, with improved quality of life and progression-free survival. Bevacizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody to vascular endothelial growth factor, is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a single agent in recurrent glioblastoma and is associated with manageable toxicity. This review discusses the efficacy, practical aspects, and response assessment challenges with the use of bevacizumab in the treatment of high-grade gliomas. Keywords: bevacizumab, antiangiogenesis, glioma, glioblastoma, vascular endothelial growth factor

Abstract: Let \"\" be an injective function. For a vertex labeling f, the induced edge labeling \"\" is defined by, \"\" or \"\"; then, the edge labels are distinct and are from \"\". Then f is called a root square mean labeling of G. In this paper, we prove root square mean labeling of some degree splitting graphs.

American Journal of Computational Mathematics (AJCM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ajcm.2012.21002
Abstract: We investigate the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) model and G-CSF (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor) treatment of CN (Cyclical Neutropenia). We collect grey collies and normal dog’s data from CN and analyze the G-CSF treatment. The model develops the dynamics of circulating blood cells before and after the G-CSF treatment. This is quite natural and useful for the collection of laboratory data for investigation. The proposed interventions are practical. This reduces the quantity of G-CSF required for potential maintenance. This model gives us good result in treatment. The changes would be practical and reduce the risk side as well as the cost of treatment in G-CSF.
