Abstract: the scarcity of good quality water has led to the necessity of using wastewater for irrigation in the semi-arid region of brazil. this greenhouse experiment was carried out in the universidade federal rural do semiárido, located in mossoro-rn, aiming to evaluate the use of wastewater from the reverse osmosis desalination process on lettuce (lactuca sativa l) production. the experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications. treatments were arranged in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme: five levels of salinity (1.1, 2.4, 3.6, 4,7 and 5.7 ds m-1) in the nutrient solution (according to the proportions of desalination of the wastewater in the nutrient solution: 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%), and two lettuce cultivars: ver?nica and quatro esta??es. seedlings were planted in trays filled with coconut fiber as a substrate and allowed to growth for 24 days under hydroponic conditions, with different levels of salinity in the nutrient solution. the nutrient solution treatments were provided by a continuous flow rate drip irrigation system. total yield, fresh and dry mater, leaf number, and leaf area were recorded. plants grew well in all levels of salinity showing that the wastewater from the desalination process can be a source of water for the hydroponic production of lettuce, although production losses increased with salinity (6 to 8% per unit of electrical conductivity), reaching 28-35% for the solution fully based on wastewater. 'quatro esta??es' showed more tolerance to salinity than 'veronica'.
O que é a política científica e tecnológica?
Dias, Rafael de Brito;
Sociologias , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-45222011000300011
Abstract: this paper seeks to examine a public policy - science and technology policy (stp) - by debating some of its main characteristics (that distinguish it significantly from the others) and evidencing some of its less discussed aspects: as any policy elaborated in the sphere of the capitalist state, stp is, evidently, a class-oriented policy. the paper seeks to understand why this aspect is scarcely recognized. it also discusses some of the main causes and consequences of this aspect. in order to accomplish these goals, it explores some general concepts and definitions regarding public policies. it then discusses the main characteristics and processes associated to science and technology policy, as well as the specificities of brazilian stp that, to a great extent, shows its class orientation. lastly, it presents some arguments that seek to explain why this class orientation is not commonly recognized.

Revista Brasileira de Inova??o , 2007,
Abstract: The idea that the advancement of Science and Technology (S&T) necessarily leadsto progress strongly permeates Science and Technology Policies (STP) throughoutthe world. In the specific case of Latin America, where there is a huge gap betweenknowledge production and social needs, this idea seems to make even less sense thanin developed countries.Based on the criticism that this idea has received from Latin American authorssince the sixties, we show here how they could be understood today in Latin Americancountries, based on a stylization of the views of three important actors that participatein those policies: the research and development (R&D) manager, the STP evaluatorand the STP analyst.Through this analysis, and in particular for the Brazilian case, we identifyincoherences of national STP and we show how it is somewhat related to the predominanttriumphalist view concerning S&T. Also, we argue on the necessity ofadopting a critical position regarding the Instrumental and the Determinist conceptionsof Technoscience in order to make national STP more coherent in relation to the localspecificities and to the changes already in course in several of the Latin Americancountries.
