High Nature Value (HNV) Grazing Systems in Europe: A Link between Biodiversity and Farm Economics
Rafael Caballero
The Open Agriculture Journal , 2007, DOI: 10.2174/1874331500701010011]
Abstract: Large tracts of the European rural land, most frequently in the Less Favoured Areas (LFA) are devoted to lowinput and Large Scale Grazing Systems (LSGS) under severe environmental constraints. A small part of the rural population strives to make a living under a risk of abandonment. Paradoxically, these areas harbour a great part of the European High Nature Value (HNV) farmland. We argue that government intervention on these LSGS can only be devised after proper knowledge of technical, structural and social constraints. LSGS may deliver environmental and social benefits but current European Union (EU) schemes of support do not fit the requirements and spatial scale of HNV farming systems. A new methodological approach and research agenda is described based on inter-disciplinary environmental and economic research, stakeholders’ participation and differential diagnosis. The results summarise the main findings of the EUfunded LACOPE research project in seven study-areas and broadly enlarge the analysis to other European LSGS with the experience of collaborative experts. The LACOPE research project advanced the research agenda in the identification of major LSGS and diagnosis of the seven study-areas. In most of these latter, grazing and biodiversity showed compatible features, but severe structural and social constraints were identified, which require public intervention or enhancement of social cohesion. Delivering of potential environmental assets is linked to economic and social viability of these LSGS. Poor economic performance was more common than social fragility, with some LSGS well entrenched and supported by local social values and cultural traditions. The core objectives of the proposed Rural Development Policy (RDP) of the EU for the years 2007-2013 are compatible with the differential diagnosis proposed in the research agenda. However, the articulation of environmental, economic and social analysis under current schemes of policy support (Natura 2000, LFA, and agri-environment measures), can be questionable. A single space-scale of HNV farmland and system research can be better suited to reach the core objectives of the RDP guidelines for environmental and economic convergence, programming, monitoring and financial controls.
Proceedings of the 19th Workshop on Logic-based methods in Programming Environments (WLPE 2009)
Rafael Caballero,John Gallagher
Computer Science , 2010,
Abstract: This volume contains the papers presented at the 19th Workshop on Logic- based methods in Programming Environments (WLPE'09), which was held in Pasadena, USA, on July 14th, 2009. WLPE aims at providing an informal meeting for researchers working on logic-based methods and tools which support program development and analy- sis. This year, we have continued and consolidated the shift in focus from en- vironmental tools for logic programming to logic-based environmental tools for programming in general, so that this workshop can be possibly interesting for a wider scientific community. All the papers submitted to WLPE'09 have gone through a careful process of peer reviewing, with at least three reviews for each paper and a subsequent in-depth discussion in the Program Committee.
Characterization of umbilic points of isometric immersions in Riemannian and Lorentzian manifolds
Magdalena Caballero,Rafael M. Rubio
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: Several characterizations of umbilic points of submanifolds in arbitrary Riemannian and Lorentzian manifolds are given. As a consequence, we obtain new characterizations of spheres in the Euclidean space and of hyperbolic spaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space.
A dual rigidity of the sphere and the hyperbolic plane
Magdalena Caballero,Rafael M. Rubio
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: There are several well-known characterizations of the sphere as a regular surface in the Euclidean space. By means of a purely synthetic technique, we get a rigidity result for the sphere without any curvature conditions, nor completeness or compactness. As well as a dual result for the hyperbolic plane, the spacelike sphere in the Minkowski space.
Caballero, Rafael,Gomez, Trinidad,Sala, Ramon
Rect@ , 2009,
ABSTRACT The football teams take advantage of the temporary interval between the end one season and the beginning of the following one to come to reconstruct their groups of players and some times to contract new trainers or coachs. This last one usually happens when the teams has not reached in the season that finalizes the goal pursued by the club, or the trainer goes away by them to have reached and to look for new challenges in his race. Many teams in which the development of the season is not agreed with the initial expectations, comes to make some change in the sport slope, in order to be able to print a new impulse to the present trajectory. Most of the teams resort to change to the trainer (dismissing the present one) to half of season, looking for the necessary chance to be able to change the tendency. When the wished objective is not obtained short term, it changes to the trainer again, and thus some teams can even finish the season with three and four trainers. In the p
Resolution of the linear fractional goal programming problem
Caballero, Rafael,Hernández, Mónica
Rect@ , 2010,
Abstract: This work deals with the resolution of the goal programming problem with linear fraccional criteria. The main difficulty of these problems is the non-linear constraints of the mathematical programming models that have to be solved. When there exist solutions satisfying all target values, the problem is easy to solve by solving a linear problem. So, in this paper we deal with those instances where there is no guarantee such solutions exist, and therefore we look for those points in the opportunity set closest to the target values. This study has been done taking into account all the different approaches available for solving a goal programming problem, creating solution-search algorithms based on these approaches, and performing a sensitivity analysis of the target values.

Avances en Sistemas e Informática , 2007,
Abstract: Rough Set Theory (RST) is a technique for data analysis. In this study, we use RST and boostrap’s technnique to improve the performance of classifiers. The RST is used to edit and reduce the training set. We propose a method to edit training sets, which is based on the lower and upper approximations and boostrap’s technique. The accelerated growth of the environmental of information volumes on processes, phenomena and reports brings about an increasing interest in the possibility of discovering knowledge from data sets. Experimental results show a satisfactory performance using these techniques.

Revista Facultad de Ingeniería Universidad de Antioquia , 2011,
Abstract: the rough set theory provides several measures and techniques to data analysis, especially in the case of problems in which the decision feature has a discrete domain. in this paper a measure and methods are proposed which allow extending this theory to the case of problems in which the features have a continuo domain, especially the decision feature. the experimental studies show their affectivity.
Sistema de ayuda al turista: Modelo para la planificación de un viaje personalizado
Rodríguez Díaz,Beatriz; Caballero Fernández,Rafael;
Estudios y perspectivas en turismo , 2012,
Abstract: the tourist sector has undergone many changes in recent years. a substantial change has taken place in tourist preferences and behaviours. visitors look more and more for different tourist attractions instead of only sun and beach, with a move away from standard trips to other more personalized options. the advances in communication technologies and the easy access to the internet, have led to the globalization of tourist information. on these days a great number of tourists are able to access information on a huge number of products, the tourist is able to know, completely detailed, destinations and activities in those destinations, updated tariffs, etc., and also will have the opportunity to make bookings. however, with so much information, it's very difficult to study all possible alternatives for designing a trip, taking into account that also the tourist's objectives may be in conflict. therefore, the aim is develop a decision aid system for the tourist that offers him/her an itinerary according theirs needs. this system includes the activities on a set schedule, taking into account tourist wishes and the characteristics of the environment. it does solve using a multicriteria model considering the conflict among his/her criteria among other. finally, this system is applied to design a tour in andalusia.
