Abstract: The present paper aims at a systematic review of the current knowledge on phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in blood as a direct marker of chronic alcohol use and abuse. In March 2012, the search through “MeSH” and “free-text” protocols in the databases Medline/PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Ovid/Embase, combining the terms phosphatidylethanol and alcohol, provided 444 records, 58 of which fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were used to summarize the current evidence on the formation, distribution and degradation of PEth in human blood: (1), the presence and distribution of different PEth molecular species (2), the most diffused analytical methods devoted to PEth identification and quantization (3), the clinical efficiency of total PEth quantification as a marker of chronic excessive drinking (4), and the potential utility of this marker for identifying binge drinking behaviors (5). Twelve papers were included in the meta-analysis and the mean (M) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of total PEth concentrations in social drinkers (DAI ≤ 60 g/die; M = 0.288 μM; CI 0.208–0.367 μM) and heavy drinkers (DAI > 60 g/die; M = 3.897 μM; CI 2.404–5.391 μM) were calculated. The present analysis demonstrates a good clinical efficiency of PEth for detecting chronic heavy drinking.

Abstract: DAFNE induced backgrounds are dominated by Touschek scattering [1]. A luminosity upgrade of the machine at the same beam energy would be obtained essentially by increasing the bunch density, that in principle would increase this particle loss process. Some preliminary studies and general considerations of the Touschek effect for the DAFNE high luminosity upgrade are presented here.

Abstract: the different practices used in fish breeding require intense handling, leading to fish stress. the use of anesthetics is important to overcome this problem. this study aimed at evaluating the impact of eugenol on the induction and anesthetic recovery of piaractus mesopotamicus from different weight classes. an experiment was carried out in a 5x5 factorial scheme, consisting of five weight classes (50 ± 5.61 g, 100 ± 9.36 g, 150 ± 12.29 g, 200 ± 12.73 g and 250 ± 18.77 g) and five eugenol concentrations (40 mg l-1, 80 mg l-1, 120 mg l-1, 160 mg l-1 and 200 mg l-1). the anesthesia induction was divided into four stages, according to the behavior of the anesthetized fish, being the duration of each stage recorded, and the desensitization moment and recovery time evaluated. a quadratic effect was observed at the anesthetic induction time, i.e., when the dose increased, the induction time decreased, tending to stabilize for increasing doses. the best results for anesthetic induction were observed at the 175 mg l-1, 208 mg l-1, 203 mg l-1, 240 mg l-1 and 225 mg l-1 concentrations, respectively for the 50 g, 100 g, 150 g, 200 g and 250 g weight classes. no interaction between the shortest induction time and the shortest recovery time was observed. thus, the doses which provided a lower induction time for the weight classes range between 175 mg l-1 and 240 mg l-1.

Nonlinear Pulse Shaping in Fibres for Pulse Generation and Optical Processing

Abstract: The development of new all-optical technologies for data processing and signal manipulation is a field of growing importance with a strong potential for numerous applications in diverse areas of modern science. Nonlinear phenomena occurring in optical fibres have many attractive features and great, but not yet fully explored, potential in signal processing. Here, we review recent progress on the use of fibre nonlinearities for the generation and shaping of optical pulses and on the applications of advanced pulse shapes in all-optical signal processing. Amongst other topics, we will discuss ultrahigh repetition rate pulse sources, the generation of parabolic shaped pulses in active and passive fibres, the generation of pulses with triangular temporal profiles, and coherent supercontinuum sources. The signal processing applications will span optical regeneration, linear distortion compensation, optical decision at the receiver in optical communication systems, spectral and temporal signal doubling, and frequency conversion. 1. Introduction The use of photonic technologies for data processing in the all-optical domain has a strong potential for a variety of interesting applications in such diverse areas as optical telecommunications, metrology, optical sensing, microwave engineering, advanced microscopy image processing, optical computing, and many others. Advantages of processing the information in the all-optical domain include the large available bandwidth and the (potential) parallelism intrinsic to the optical approach, which translate into high-processing speeds. However, today electronic techniques of signal manipulation are advanced compared to all-optical processing devices, which are still at the research stage rather than under commercial development. A key feature of electronics, enabling many different applications, is the capability of generating electrical waveforms with arbitrary temporal profiles by use of simple integrated circuits. This capability is so far unmatched in the optical frequency range, where bulky and complex devices are required to shape the light fields. Hence, considerable knowledge still has to be accumulated and new methodologies need to be explored before a true breakthrough can be achieved in this field, allowing the range of functions and operations currently accomplished electronically, to be performed in the optical domain. Abstract: This study was aimed at analysing the effects of a 15-week instructional intervention withprimary school children regarding the use of narrative functions and evaluative strategies in writing personalaccounts. Eighty-one 4th graders from a primary school in a northern Italian town were divided intotwo groups: Labovian (N = 41) and traditional (N = 40). After the intervention, the children in the Laboviangroup, who were taught to use evaluation strategies, wrote longer and better narrations, and morepersonal and complete accounts than those in the traditional group. The improvement in writing abilitywas stable three months after the end of the intervention.
