Abstract: Plant-associated bacteria that inhabit the rhizosphere may influence the plant growth by their contribution to the endogenous pool of phytohormones and by the activity of ACC deaminase to decrease the ethylene concentration. The aim of this study was to analyse the root length growth by the promoting effect of indole acetic acid producers phytobacteria with ACC deaminase activity, on inoculated seeds of Lens esculenta as synergistic effect on root elongation. In this study, although the roots of L. esculenta seedlings do not show a significant promotion, these phytobacteria could be recommended to treat plants analyzing their added inoculum to increase plant biomass and retard the effect of ethylene on cultures supplied with Tryptophan and ACC.

Abstract: Polyurethane is a versatile plastic with several industrial applications in the modern life, but it is considered as a very recalcitrant material. Biodegradation of this plastic has been poorly explored, and most of the studies that have been published focus on bacterial enzymes. In this work, some fungi with the capacity of growing with polyurethane foam as nutrient source were isolated from sands contaminated with this plastic and from DIA/UAdeC collection, testing their ability to grow on polyurethane as sole carbon and nitrogen sources and their enzymatic activities were determined in specific media as well as their invasion capacity on polyurethane agar plates. 22 fungal strains demonstrated their capacity of growing on polyurethane. Among the enzymatic activities evaluate, the most common was the urease activity (95% of the strains).Protease, esterase and laccase activities were present in 86%, 50% and 36% respectively. The great ability of the isolated fungal strains to use polyurethane foam as nutrient opens an important opportunity to study at detail the biodegradation of this plastic, with clear implications in cell biology and environmental technology.
Colecistectomía laparoscópica transumbilical: Una técnica reproducible

Abstract: background: a new laparoscopic cholecystectomy technique uses a single umbilical port, to reduce trauma. aim: to evaluate prospectively the feasibility of performing single incision laparoscopic cholecystectomies. material and methods: patients with cholelithiasis or gallbladder polyps, without recent acute biliary episodes and a normal biliary tract were considered eligible for the study. an optical device with a working channel was introduced through a single umbilical incisión. a second smaller trocar was also introduced through the same incisión. results: between may 2008 and february 2009, twelve women aged 14 to 64 years (nine with cholelitiasis and three with gallbladder polyps) fulfilled inclusion criteria. the procedure lasted 160 minutes at the beginning of the series to 45 minutes in the latest cases. abdominal pain and hospital stay (12-48 hours) do not differ from patients subjected conventional laparoscopy cases. no complication was recorded and no patient had to be converted to conventional surgery. conclusions: single umbilical incisión laparoscopic cholecystectomy is similar to conventional laparoscopy procedures in terms of surgical pain and hospital stay and offers a better esthetic outcome.

Abstract: Introducción: Con el objetivo de disminuir el trauma quirúrgico, se dise a un protocolo para evaluar la factibilidad de realizar en nuestro medio una colecistectomía laparoscópica utilizando un único punto de ingreso al abdomen. Material y Método: Se incluye pacientes con colelitiasis o pólipos vesiculares, sin antecedentes de cólicos biliares recientes y con vía biliar fina. A través de una incisión umbilical se introduce una óptica con canal de trabajo y por la misma incisión un segundo trocar. Resultados: Entre mayo de 2008 y febrero de 2009, 12 mujeres cumplen los criterios de inclusión, 9 con colelitiasis y 3 con pólipos vesiculares. No hubo conversión a cirugía laparoscópica tradicional, el tiempo operatorio varió de 160 minutos al comienzo a 45 minutos en los últimos casos; el dolor fue similar a la cirugía laparoscópica tradicional. No hubo complicaciones intra ni post operatorias, el tiempo de estadía post operatoria fue de 12 a 48 horas. Conclusión: La colecistectomía laparoscópica transumbilical con mínimo trauma, es comparable a la cirugía laparoscópica tradicional en relación a dolor post operatorio y estadía hospitalaria, sin embargo, ofrece mejores resultados estéticos. Isolation and pathogenicity of fungi associated to ambrosia borer (Euplatypus segnis) found injuring pecan (Carya illinoensis) wood  [PDF]

Abstract: Euplatypus segnis is an insect pest of economic importance in pecan (Carya illinoensis) trees grown at Parras, General Cepeda and Torreón Coahuila, Mexico. The objectives in this study-were to identify the fungal strains associated to ambrosia borer body and diseased pecan wood and determine their pathogenicity. The results showed that the associated fungi to Euplatypus segnis and damaging the pecan wood were identified as: Helminthosporium sp., Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., Phoma sp., Ascochyta sp., Phaecylomices sp., Umbeliopsis sp., Torula sp., Fusarium solani, Alternaria alternata, Fusarum oxysporum, and Lasiodiplodia theobromae. The pathogenicity tests on healthy 3 year old pecan trees cv. western using Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Alternaria alternata and Lasiodiplodia theobromae suspension conidia shown die back tree branches after 84 days inoculation. The insect in combination with the fungal invasion eventually cause the death of trees. Additionally, the insect contributes to the spread of fungi in pecan nut orchards.

Abstract: This paper introduces a methodology of characterization of nanostructured systems in which trans- mission electron microscopy is used as a central element of the study. Experimental studies of HREM are performed in parallel with studies in the Simula TEM program to stimulate high-resolution images and diffraction patterns. To confirm the accuracy of the results, studies of X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed. In order to illustrate the methodology, bismuth oxide Bi2O3 nanoparticles are synthesized by a method of biosynthesis because this sample is rich in structural information.

Abstract: a cross-sectional, descriptive, and retrospective study of 45 patients under 15 years of age, who were hospitalized at the pediatric intensive care unit from the teaching southern children's hospital in santiago de cuba with cranioencephalic trauma diagnosis and surgically treated due to this condition, was carried out from january, 2005 to june, 2009. results were as follows: this kind of injury prevailed in children aged 5-10 years, children under 4 years of age died to a greater extent, and lower score of glasgow coma scale was consistent with the worst post-operative results. an adequate neurological anesthetic control contributed to a decreased morbidity and mortality in the case material, and to a low delay between the developed condition and the surgical treatment.

Abstract: according to the definition given by the united nations food and agriculture organization (fao), prebiotics are non live components of food that grant a health benefit to the host, associated with the modulation the intestinal microbiota. prebiotic compounds include, among others, oligosaccharides (fructooligosaccharides, galactooligosaccharides, xylooligosaccharides, pecticooligosaccharides), lactosaccharose, sugar-alcohols, glucooligosccharides, levans or fructans, resistant starch, and xylosaccharides. the recovery, synthesis and/or purification processes are specific for each group. microflora metabolism produces formation of gases such as h2, co2 and ch4, and organic compounds (short chain fatty acids and ethanol) as products of prebiotic fermentation. the effects on the health of the consumer produced by the action of the prebiotics can be manifested locally, as by an increase of fecal mass, colon absorption of some minerals, and folic acid synthesis. they can also be observed systemically, as by a decrease of cholesterol, triglycerides, ammonium, and urea, among other activities. one of the applications with the greatest potential in the study of pre and probiotics is the formulation of symbiotic food; probiotics also promise to fulfill the present needs of comsumers, who demand functional food.
Alkaline Cooking Quality of Polyembryonic and Non-Polyembryonic Maize Populations

Abstract: Polyembryony is the formation of several embryos in a seed and is present in many plants, included maize. In the present study the chemical, physical and rheological properties of nixtamalized maize flour, masa and tortilla of maize kernel with high polyembryony levels and brachytic population were evaluated and compared to three control populations. The nixtamalized maize flour and tortillas of brachytic population were similar to the control population in most of the tests. The retrogradation in nixtamalized maize flour of brachytic population was lower than the control nixtamalized maize flour showed 191.77 RVU; the protein content of nixtamalized maize flour of brachytic population was greater and content of ash in tortilla was lower than the controls. The flour made from maize brachytic population is an option for the flour and tortilla industry.
