Abstract: fecal samples of 53 white face monkeys (cebus capucinus) from some sites of costa rica were studied for blood and intestinal parasites. animals were anesthetized with darts containing telazol, blood and fecal samples were collected and all the material was studied in the laboratory. for blood parasites, giemsa stain andknott concentration was performed. intestinal parasites were studied by direct examination in 0,85% saline solution and a iodine solution. haematoxylin stain was used for better protozoa identification. strongyloides sp, hookworms, acanthocephalid eggs and other nematodes, as well as tritrichomonas sp (more frequent) and other protozoa were found. the presence of at least one parasites was observed in 33.3% to 100% of the fecal samples with an average of 73.6%. there was not any correlation between sex and infection rate, but the presence of parasite was higher in heavier (older) animals. microfllarias were the only blood organism detected.the reasons for these high infection rates could be explained for feed diversity, contaminated soil and water contact and sociability of these animals, among other factors.

In vitro antimalarial activity of extracts of some plants from a biological reserve in Costa Rica

Revista de Biología Tropical , 2012,
Abstract: Treatment with the usual antimalarial drugs, have induced parasite resistance, reinforcing the need to finding natural antimalarial components that would be found on plants from the forest. Therefore, we decided to look for these components in Costa Rican plants from a protected forest area. Fresh and dry extracts of roots, bark, leaves, flowers and fruits of 25 plants from a biological reserve in Costa Rica, Reserva Biológica Alberto Manuel Brenes (REBAMB), were studied in vitro for the presence of substances with antimalarial activity. By studying the inhibition of P. berghei schizogony, we assessed the antimalarial activity of several plant extracts: Aphelandra aurantiaca, A. tridentata (Acanthaceae); Xanthosoma undipes (Araceae); Iriartea deltoidea (Arecaceae); Neurolaena lobata (Asteraceae); Senna papillosa, Pterocarpus hayessi, Lonchocarpus pentaphyllus (Fabaceae); Nectandra membranacea, Persea povedae, Cinamomum chavarrianum (Lauraceae); Hampea appendiculata (Malvaceae); Ruagea glabra, Guarea glabra (Meliaceae); Psidium guajava (Myrtaceae); Bocconia frutescens (Papaveraceae); Piper friedrichsthalii (Piperaceae); Clematis dioica (Ranunculaceae); Prunus annularis (Rosaceae); Siparuna thecaphora (Siparunaceae); Solanum arboreum, Witheringia solanácea (Solanaceae); Ticodendrum incognitum (Ticodendraceae); Heliocarpus appendiculatus (Tiliaceae) and Myriocarpa longipes (Urticaceae). We used different parts of the plants as well as fresh and dried extracts for testing IC50. The solid content of the extracts ranged from 1-71.9μg/mL. The fresh extracts showed stronger activity than the dry ones. Since the plants showing the strongest antimalarial activity are very common in Central America, and some similar genera of these plants have shown positives results in South America, we considered important to present these findings for discussion. On the other hand, this is the first systematic study of this kind ever realized in a circumscribed and protected area of Costa Rica. Rev. Biol. Trop. 60 (2): 881-891. Epub 2012 June 01.

Abstract: Resumen. Abstract. Defining a global strategy that universities can use in order to fulfill their mission and their vision of the future constitutes a vital task for university authorities. A skill-based University Strategy model is introduced in this paper as a conceptual and methodological resource to be used in the analysis and definition of institutional strategies within a university. We hereby present the fundamentals of the project, describe its strategic scenarios, and explain the process of strategy creation. This is illustrated through the experience of the global process of planning that the Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica, has gone through.
Insolvency Regulations and Economic Recession: An Austro-Libertarian Point of View  [PDF]
Valerio Tavormina
Beijing Law Review (BLR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/blr.2014.52014
Abstract:

Economic recovery after a crisis requires above all capital to support the most efficient investments. It is therefore counterproductive to delay selling off the assets of insolvent debtors through lengthy insolvency proceedings instead of letting the creditors free to enforce their claims in the speediest way.

Contrasting Wrongs by Privates to Keep the Market Rolling  [PDF]
Valerio Tavormina
Beijing Law Review (BLR) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/blr.2015.61009
Abstract: The market must be defended (also) against the countrymen’s offenses, minimizing the costs involved and this minimization requires as a precondition the most precise possible predetermination of the offenses. The more effective regulatory device in preventing wrongs seems the threat of sanctions in excess of the redress, entrusting the decision on their application to the injured party, who should at the same time be the only entitled to reap the benefit, without distinctions between crimes and civil wrongs. The credibility of the threat, as well as any actual restauration of the harm and the prevention of reiteration, requires accuracy, speed and effectiveness in the application of sanctions and therefore: 1) the parties should have the duty to tell the truth and the instruments for finding the facts should be strengthened; 2) the judges’ mistakes should be sanctioned as well; 3) the jurisdiction should be drawn so as to favor a rapid application of sanctions against an incontrovertible finding of the facts; 4) any form of penalties’ remission should be subject to the consent of the injured party.
COSTA RlCA: RECONFIGURACIóN POLíTICA EN UN CONTEXTO DE GOBIERNO DIVIDIDO
ALFARO-REDONDO,RONALD; GóMEZ-CAMPOS,STEFFAN;
Revista de ciencia política (Santiago) , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-090X2012000100006
Abstract: three main features characterize socio-political events in costa rica during 2010 and 2011. first, in the political system, internal divisions within the incumbent party and across other parties in congress, the constant reshuffles in the cabinet under divided government have challenged the new government. s 1'sxsssssecond, the economic situation is improving after the most recent crisis, despite weaknesses remains. finally, in the social realm there is a paradox, on one hand, the traditional human development indicators (life expectancy, education and social security) have improved over time whereas on the other, there have been an increasing trend in social inequality, and crime as well as a worsening in the public capacities to build required infrastructure.
