Evaluation of XIS-Mobile, a Domain Specific Language for Mobile Application Development  [PDF]
André Ribeiro, Alberto Rodrigues da Silva
Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2014.711081
Abstract: The great evolution of the mobile market during the last years caused some fragmentation of the mobile platforms namely through the existence of different programming languages and software development tools for each platform. This fact can be an obstacle and increases the development complexity and costs when we want to develop mobile applications for multiple platforms. The XIS-Mobile domain specific language (defined as a UML profile) and its MDD-based framework address this problem by proposing platform-independent models to describe mobile applications and from them automatically generate the application’s source code. Many issues arose during an iterative process of evaluation which originated changes and the evolution of XIS-Mobile. This paper presents the results of the evaluation of XIS-Mobile (both the language and the companion framework) obtained through the implementation of a case study and by conducting a user session, and discusses its benefits and challenges.
Data Modeling and Data Analytics: A Survey from a Big Data Perspective  [PDF]
André Ribeiro, Afonso Silva, Alberto Rodrigues da Silva
Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2015.812058
Abstract: These last years we have been witnessing a tremendous growth in the volume and availability of data. This fact results primarily from the emergence of a multitude of sources (e.g. computers, mobile devices, sensors or social networks) that are continuously producing either structured, semi-structured or unstructured data. Database Management Systems and Data Warehouses are no longer the only technologies used to store and analyze datasets, namely due to the volume and complex structure of nowadays data that degrade their performance and scalability. Big Data is one of the recent challenges, since it implies new requirements in terms of data storage, processing and visualization. Despite that, analyzing properly Big Data can constitute great advantages because it allows discovering patterns and correlations in datasets. Users can use this processed information to gain deeper insights and to get business advantages. Thus, data modeling and data analytics are evolved in a way that we are able to process huge amounts of data without compromising performance and availability, but instead by “relaxing” the usual ACID properties. This paper provides a broad view and discussion of the current state of this subject with a particular focus on data modeling and data analytics, describing and clarifying the main differences between the three main approaches in what concerns these aspects, namely: operational databases, decision support databases and Big Data technologies.
Os Objetos ativos de Willys de Castro
Silva, Renato Rodrigues da;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142006000100017
Abstract: willys de castro has developed the objetos ativos (1959-1962) during the neoconcrete phase. in accordance with ferdinand de saussure's linguistics and jacques derrida's concept of "deconstruction", this article supports the idea that the originality of this series of objects is based on the inscription of "signs". thus, the visual and semantic analysis of the artist's discoveries - such as the "positive-negative motif" and the emphasis on the tridimensionality of the support, achieved in soma entre planos i (1959), objeto ativo de 1959, objeto ativo de 1960 and objeto ativo de 1962 - shows that these signs represent consecutive changes of pictorial and sculptural readings. we conclude that the unity of these works is found in the convergence to the "paradigm of perspective" to decline the correlative versions of painting and sculpture.

Abstract: this paper brings forward, in a systematic way, the discussion about realism and anti-realism in science, having as main aims, the reconstruction and the criticism of both proposals.
Retalho de pericárdio pediculado vascularizado autógeno para aortoplastia e corre??o da coarcta??o simples de aorta torácica, ou associada à hipoplasia, atresia ou interrup??o do arco aórtico
Silva, Paulo Rodrigues da;
Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Cardiovascular , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-76382006000400016
Abstract: objective: eighteen years ago, two young male patients of 8 months and 13 years with aortic coarctation associated to aortic hypoplasia between the left subclavian artery and the coarctated area, were submitted to surgical correction using a new world-pioneering surgical technique developed in our service. method: this technique consists of sectioning the patent ductus arteriosus, followed by resection of all the coarctated tissue in the aortic wall and aortoplasty correction by means of the lengthwise implantation of a pediculated autogenous pericardial flap. this flap is inserted into the thoracic aorta, from the root of the left subclavian artery to 2.0 cm below the coarctated area. results: for both patients, the blood pressure and arterial pulses of both arms and legs have been normal since the surgery until the present moment. clinical examination and doppler evaluation evidenced no pressure gradient between arms and legs, normal blood flow and no pressure gradient through the coarctated area. both patients were submitted to other evaluations 18 years after surgery, including cardiac and thoracic aortic catheterization followed by aortography. these evaluations demonstrated normal aortic configuration, with normal diameter, including the areas above and below the coarctated site. there was no evidence of any kind of degenerative lesions of the vascularized pericardial flap or re-coarctation of the lesion and no signs of aneurysms forming or the presence of atherosclerosis of the flap. moreover, and very importantly, it was evident that the pediculated completely vascularized autologous pericardial flap had been kept alive and had grown in diameter as well as in length. conclusion: the surgical technique using a pediculated vascularized autologous pericardial flap is the most complete and adequate for the correction of the different types of simple or complex forms of thoracic aortic coarctation in all age groups, including newborn babies when compared to all t
"Rememora??o"/comemora??o: as utiliza??es sociais da memória
Silva, Helenice Rodrigues da;
Revista Brasileira de História , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-01882002000200008
Abstract: this article deals with national celebrations and their symbolic values, emphasizing the dimension of the future. looking for national consensus, political authorities invest in the remembrance of important dates to find in the past a historical legitimity which allows the consolidation of collective memory. thus, behind national commemorations, we do come across the question of time and its relationship to the past of history and the present of memory. basing on paul ricoeur's analyses, this text tries, on one hand, to tackle the mechanisms of appropriation of historical times, and on the other, the construction and transmission processes of a social memory.
S?bre o modêlo catalítico reversível aplicado ao estudo da cinética epidemiológica da infec??o chagásica
Silva,Guilherme Rodrigues da;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102006000200001
Abstract: the so called "reversible catalytic model" was applied to the study of certain epidemiological aspects of the human infection by tripanosoma cruzi. the deterministic model was fitted to prevalence data obtained from populations living in two distinct geographical areas in south america. in spite of the numerous assumptions, which are basic to the model, it was shown that, in general, it describes reasonably well the epidemiologic cynetics of chagas' infection. the force of infection reflected in 35 effective contacts a year per 1,000 people in a rural area of venezuela was about three times as large as the force acting upon the population groups living in two small fringe areas of salvador city, in brazil. the a. suggests some of the possible further applications of the mathematical model to investigations on the natural history of chagas' disease.

As controvérsias a respeito da participa??o de Rosalind Franklin na constru??o do modelo da dupla hélice
Silva, Marcos Rodrigues da;
Scientiae Studia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-31662010000100004
Abstract: in the double helix, james watson narrated his version of the building of the dna double-helix model, in which he indicates that rosalind franklin, a physicist specialized in x-ray crystallography, developed empirical fundamental works to watson and crick's model construction. watson's report gave rise to a historiographical problem: why franklin, who disposes of the empirical data produced by herself, did not decipher the dna molecular structure? watson himself provides an answer, suggesting that franklin had no theoretical inclination for a helicoidal representation of dna, making strictly experimental work. this suggestion has received replies by historians, so that the historiographical problem subjacent to watson's report maintains its actuality. nevertheless, it is possible to obtain clues that, rather getting involved in the building of a new structure for dna, franklin was concerned with mapping all the aspects of the molecule. this article has two aims: showing that franklin's line of defense adopted by some of her defenders in fact occasionally end up compromising franklin, and presenting an outline of an alternative interpretation which, not attributing to franklin the main goal of building a molecular structure for dna, ends up giving her a much more comfortable role according to the historical point of view (which does not mean denying that she had the secondary goal of reaching a structure for dna).
