Background: Previous studies with neuropsychological testing have shown deficits in working memory in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). It is not yet clear if there is correlation with functional activation in neuroimaging such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Objective: To describe a new paradigm of neurocognitive assessment to identify the possible differences in the characteristics of neurofunctional response in patients with BD using a working memory task. Method: Descriptive, correlational, cross sectional study. We evaluated 12 euthymic patients with BD-I (in treatment with lithium or valproate or without treatment at least 2 months prior to the study) and 4 participants with no psychiatric disorder. fMRI was used to correlate their operative memory processes with the changes seen in the BOLD signal using a paradigm that combines the presentation of blocks and related events. Results: Control's brain activation was greater during response condition c

Abstract: objective: to characterize the main psycho pathological findings and neuropsychological profiles in a group of offspring of parents with bipolar disorder of antioquia-colombian ancestry. methods: 20 children of parents with bipolar disorder type i were assessed using the k-sads-pl in order to establish their diagnosis according with dsm-iv-tr criteria. neuropsychological assessment was done by using subtests of the "evaluación neuropsicológica infantil (eni)" and the abbreviated version of wisc iii. bipolar parents and biological co-parents were evaluated with the diagnostic interview for genetic studies (digs). results: the most common psychiatric disorders found were separation anxiety disorder (35%), simple phobia (20%), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (50%), and oppositional defiant disorder (20%). this group of offspring also presented subsyndromal anxiety and adhd symptoms as a common psychopathological finding. none of the children assessed had bipolar disorder and only two cases presented major depressive disorder. however, subsyndromal symptoms for mania were found in a quarter of the sample. the main neuropsychological findings in the offspring were difficulties in memory evocation, memory recall, and long term memory. conclusions: this group of children and adolescents of parents with bd type i from paisa population (colombia) genetic isolate presents dsm-iv-tr diagnoses of anxiety and disruptive disorders and subsyndromal symptoms of several psychiatric disorders including bd. some neuropsychological measures show low performance in memory and attention tests.

Abstract: background: previous studies with neuropsychological testing have shown deficits in working memory in patients with bipolar disorder (bd). it is not yet clear if there is correlation with functional activation in neuroimaging such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fmri). objective: to describe a new paradigm of neurocognitive assessment to identify the possible differences in the characteristics of neurofunctional response in patients with bd using a working memory task. method: descriptive, correlational, cross sectional study. we evaluated 12 euthymic patients with bd-i (in treatment with lithium or valproate or without treatment at least 2 months prior to the study) and 4 participants with no psychiatric disorder. fmri was used to correlate their operative memory processes with the changes seen in the bold signal using a paradigm that combines the presentation of blocks and related events. results: control's brain activation was greater during response condition compared with bipolar patients. when comparing between patient groups there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). discussion: the paradigm we deployed is useful to study activation in brain areas involved in working memory processes. the results with bipolar patients need to be expanded with larger populations to compare other possible cognitive deficits and medication specific effects.

Abstract: background: patients with bipolar disorder show increased activation in limbic and para-limbic areas whereas they show decreased activity in working memory-related areas. the degree to which pharmacological treatment determines these alterations is hard to gage, given that most studies have been done on patients already receiving such treatments. objective: we seek to identify differences and the role of treatment in neurofunctional response in patients with bipolar disorder type i compared to controls, specifically while challenged with working memory tasks. methods: thirtythree euthymic patients with type i bipolar disorder and 10 controls were evaluated in a cross-sectional study; 13 of them were being treated with lithium, 9 with valproic acid, and 10 had not received treatment for at least 2 months prior to the study. correlation was established between functional magnetic resonance (fmri) bold signal and working memory processes. results: there were no significant differences between the groups in demographics or clinical variables except for ymrs score. patients and controls showed significantly different patterns of brain activation in the anterior cingulate (p:0.05) during working memory tasks. conclusion: there are statistically significant differences in the anterior cingulate bold (blood oxygen level dependent) signal of patients with type i bipolar disorder compared to controls.

Abstract: management of malignant obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract constitutes a major challenge. most patients are in a state of profound depletion due to the underlying malignancy and are not ideal candidates for major operative procedures. in recent years, self-expandible metal stents have shown to be an effective and safe, less invasive alternative in the treatment of malignant esophageal and gastroduodenal obstruction. we hereby report a prospective study of 99 esophageal and 60 gastroduodenal stents placed over the past four years, together with a literature review. technical and clinical success rates were 96% and 85%, respectively. the majority of patients tolerated oral feeding within the first 36 hours following placement of the stent. there were no major complications, such as bleeding or perforation, and there were no deaths. thirteen patients developed signs of obstruction of the stent, and they were successfully managed by endoscopy. our data confirm the efficacy of the stent in the palliation of malignant esophageal and gastroduodenal obstruction and the method is associated with low complications rates.

Abstract: this article is the result of the research ''communicative interactions in a learning virtual environment,'' conducted by the e-virtual research group. the purpose of this research is to answer how communicate interactions and students' participation are being generated around a virtual environment. the research was developed through a comprehensive methodology, with an ethno-methodological approach, from dialogs and discussions in fora, chats, and messages, tools from which it has been understood that some participation and interaction used by students are related to the schedule, the order in which the activities have been sent, the request for advice, the use of tags, co-evaluation, and silences in the environment. although findings are related to students who participated in the research, it is possible that they become characteristics common to other groups linked to learning virtual environments.
