Abstract: syphilis is an infectious disease transmitted through sex or vertically during pregnancy. it is characterized by periods of activity and latency, disseminated systemic involvement, and progression to acute complications in patients that remain untreated or have been inadequately treated. syphilis is known since the 15th century and studied by all medical specialties, particularly by dermatology. the etiologic agent treponema pallidum has never been cultured and was described over 100 years ago. the disease has been effectively treated with penicillin since 1943, but it remains an important health problem in developed and developing countries. given its transmission characteristics, the condition has accompanied the behavioral changes in society in recent years and has become even more important due to the possibility of increasing the risk of transmitting acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. new laboratory tests and methods of control aimed at appropriate treatment of patients and their partners, use of condoms, and dissemination of information to the population comprise some measures to control syphilis adopted by health program organizers.
Estimation of genetic parameters in the analysis of square lattice experiment group

Abstract: aiming to demonstrate how to obtain unbiased estimates of genetic parameters of base populations, unaffected by genotype x environment effects, this paper presents the variance and covariance components of the intra-block analysis of a group of square lattice experiments and the estimators of the components associated to treatment effect. random model and mixed models with environment effect fixed and other effects random are considered. in the analysis with treatments not corrected for blocks/replications/environments, the estimators of the variance and covariance components due to treatment effect are different from those of the analysis considering the complete block model. data from two experiments of a breeding program of eucalyptus pyrocarpa were used for genetic analysis. the analysis of variance of height and diameter indicated absence of interaction between progeny and environment. due to this result, the prediction of the direct and indirect genetic gains was based on the mean of the two environments. the high estimates of narrow sense heritabilities and additive genetic correlation indicate that selection of the superior families will be effective in changing the means of the base population for both traits.

Abstract: Two main perspectives of investigation emerge from the study of a territory’s rurality: a geographical approach and a sociological approach. The research examines the sub-regional study case of ‘Nuovo circondario imolese’. The analysis shows that the combination of traditional institutional criteria with detailed informations about the territory, generates more accurate results which determine a better comprehension of the characteristics of restricted areas’ rurality. Over the period 1991-2001, the study highlights an increase in rural areas. This result could be interpreted as an effect of urban sprawl’s intensification, that increases the competition between non-farm residences and agricultural activities.
