Numerical Characterization of Harbor Oscillations in the Port of Ensenada, Mexico  [PDF]
Carlos R. Torres-Navarrete
Open Journal of Marine Science (OJMS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojms.2016.63033
Abstract: A series of numerical experiments from a barotropic configuration of the General Curvilinear Ocean Model (GCOM) was conducted to analyze the response to infragravity (IG) waves of the Port of Ensenada, located within Bahia de Todos Santos (BTS), west coast of Mexico. Experiments with forcing frequencies f = 50?1 min?1, f = 30?1 min?1, f = 25?1 min?1 and f = 16.66?1 min?1 showed the expected increase of energy at the corresponding forcing frequency band and also the appearance of secondary peaks of energy at frequency bands f = 8.33?1 min?1 and f = 4.16?1 min?1 which were identified as modes f1 and f2; being the band at f = 16.66?1 min?1 the zeroth f0 mode. Maximum peak of spectral energy from the numerical experiments was found at frequency band f0 = 16.66?1 min?1 which agreed with the estimated maximum value of the amplification factor and with the T0 mode of oscillation of the port. Distribution of amplitudes inside PE for modes f0, f1 and f2 were also presented. Mode f0 represents a quarter-wave oscillation with amplitudes of the same sign; mode f1 has two nodal lines and mode f2 presents and additional one. Corresponding harbor currents were also calculated, they were in the range 20 - 160 cm?s?1. Finally, in order to elucidate the source of the external signals found in the spectral analysis of this study, the natural oscillation modes of the BTS were estimated. Although more studies are needed, BTS oscillation mode T2 = 16.82 min, was identified as the external forcing that excites larger oscillations within the port.
Modelling Three-Dimensional Winds on a NW Pacific Region of Mexico Using Boundary-Fitted Grids  [PDF]
Carlos R. Torres-Navarrete
Open Journal of Marine Science (OJMS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojms.2017.71009
Abstract: In this study, the momentum equations describing an atmospheric flow over a NW Pacific region of Mexico are solved numerically. In order to capture the complex flow-topography interactions with detail, a combination of a numerical wind model in full 3D curvilinear coordinates, along with a high resolution boundary-fitted grid is used. Boundary conditions were obtained from ten years (2002-2012) of measured offshore wind data. Prevailing winds from April to September during that period of observations were selected for the simulations. For the cases analyzed, it was found that at the points of the study region (PSS, PSM, PM), wind speed increased about 10% to 20% of its offshore values, while inland they decreased about 86% to 96%. This spatial behavior agreed very well with the observed local winds. A coastal jet (CJ), 35 km long with speeds about 1.5 - 2 m/s, emanating from PSS was found for NNW winds. Modeled winds were also used to compute wind stresses, wind stress curl, and CUI fields. Wind stress values agreed very well to those reported in the literature. High values of wind stress curl, and CUI were found at the lee of the points (PSS, PSM, PM). Indirect estimations of sea surface currents were about 15 - 20 cm/s offshore and 5 - 10 cm/s at the coast.

Metallic behavior at YBaCuO7/ZAs interfaces (Z=Ga, Al)
R. Torres,R. Baquero
Physics , 2012,
Abstract: We present the electronic band structure of the interfaces $YBa_2Cu_3O_7/GaAs$ (direct gap) and $YBa_2Cu_3O_7/AlAs$ (indirect gap) in different configurations calculated using the Density Functional Theory as in the Wien2k code within the local density approximation. We have projected the density of states at the atomic layers forming the interface. We concentrated in the semiconductor side. The two first atomic layers in the semiconductor side of the interface present a clear metallic behavior. We found for both semiconductors considered that it converges towards the bulk atomic-layer projected density of states at the fifth atomic layer from the interface. We considered an ideal non-reconstructed interface in the (001) direction in this work. This behavior is interesting and could be used in several technological applications.
Is fever suppression involved in the etiology of autism and neurodevelopmental disorders?
Anthony R Torres
BMC Pediatrics , 2003, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2431-3-9
Abstract: The blockage of fever with antipyretics interferes with normal immunological development in the brain leading to neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism in certain genetically and immunologically disposed individuals.Epidemiological studies to determine associations between the use of antipyretics and neurodevelopmental disorders should be undertaken. Biochemical tests will involve the examination of fluids/serum by mass spectrometry and the determination of cytokine/chemokine levels in serum and cell culture fluids after stimulation with fever-inducing molecules from bacteria, viruses and yeast. Postmortem brain can be examined by immunohistochemistry or other methods such as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to determine altered expression levels of chemokines/cytokines and other molecules.1) The use of antipyretics during pregnancy or in young children may be reserved for more severe fevers. 2) The perplexing genetic findings in autism may be better understood by categorizing genes along functional pathways. 3) New treatments based on immune, cell, pharmacological or even heat therapies may be developed.According to epidemiological studies, autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder, is increasing in the pediatric population [1]. In 1966 the prevalence rate was 4–5/10,000 births [2], while two recent studies show prevalence rates of 14.9/10,000 [1] and 34/10,000 [3]. Although there is no question that more clinical cases are being detected, the increase in prevalence of autism is in dispute as diagnostic practices have changed over the years and this heightened awareness has changed the evaluation of previously unrecognized cases [4]. Increased services have also contributed to the rise as clinicians are inclined to get individuals into autism programs that can help remarkably. Despite these considerations, there is still a concern about a real increase in the prevalence rate.In 1943, Kanner [5] described autism as a neurodevelopmental disorder with impairm

Resolución del problema de dise?o de redes de producción-distribución internacionales para una empresa multinacional colombiana
Montoya Torres,Jairo R.;
Pensamiento & Gestión , 2009,
Abstract: this paper studies the problem of supplying network design for a multinational colombian company leader in designing, manufacturing and distributing clothes, knapsacks, backpacks, purses, briefcases and accessories, with more than 200 selling points in 15 countries. because of the computational complexity and size of the supply network problem, this paper proposes a three-phase resolution approach based on the construction and resolution of linear programming models. such approach is implemented using real-life data provided by the company under study, allowing the actual presentation of alternatives for an efficient and rational decision-making at the enterprise.

On the viability of democracy: Lessons from postwar Iraq
Manuel R. Torres Soriano
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 2009,
Abstract: The aim of this article is to reflect on the viability of democratisation processes in countries lacking in any previous history of political systems based on political pluralism and citizen representation. Iraq’s most recent history represents a paradigmatic example of the factors that explain the success or failure of processes of establishing and consolidating democracy in the world. The article analyses certain factors of the country’s social, political and economic structure which not only help to explain the development of events during Western occupation, they also demonstrate that the democratisation of Iraq was, and continues to be, an unfeasible objective for the short and medium-term future.
