Studies of Electron Avalanche Behavior in Liquid Argon

Abstract: Electron avalanching in liquid argon is being studied as a function of voltage, pressure, radiation intensity, and the concentrations of certain additives, especially xenon. The avalanches produced in an intense electric field at the tip of a tungsten needle are initiated by ionization from a moveable americium (241Am) gamma ray source. Photons from xenon excimers are detected as photomultiplier signals in coincidence with the current pulse from the needle. In pure liquid argon the avalanche behavior is erratic, but the addition of even a small amount of xenon (>100ppm) stabilizes the performance. Similar attempts with neon (30%) as an additive to argon have been unsuccessful. Tests with higher energy gamma rays (57Co) yield spectra and other performance characteristics quite similar to those using the 241Am source. Two types of signal pulses are commonly observed: a set of pulses that are sensitive to ambient pressure, and a set of somewhat smaller pulses that are not pressure dependent.

Abstract: En este artículo se presenta un método de optimización multiobjetivo para la solución del problema de balanceo de carga en redes de transmisión multicast, apoyándose en la aplicación de la meta-heurística de Simulated Annealing (Recocido Simulado). El método minimiza cuatro parámetros básicos para garantizar la calidad de servicio en transmisiones multicast: retardo origen destino, máxima utilización de enlaces, ancho de banda consumido y número de saltos. Los resultados devueltos por la heurística serán comparados con los resultados arrojados por el modelo matemático propuesto en investigaciones anteriores.

Abstract: This white paper is a condensation of a report by a committee appointed jointly by the Nuclear Science and Physics Divisions at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The goal of this study was to identify the most promising technique(s) for resolving the neutrino mass hierarchy. For the most part, we have relied on calculations and simulations presented by the proponents of the various experiments. We have included evaluations of the opportunities and challenges for these experiments based on what is available already in the literature.
Synthesis and Thermoelectric Properties of Bi2Se3 Nanostructures

Abstract: Bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) nanostructures were synthesized via solvothermal method. The crystallinity of the as-synthesized sample has been analyzed by X-ray diffraction, which shows the formation of rhombohedral Bi2Se3. Electron microscopy examination indicates that the Bi2Se3 nanoparticles have hexagonal flake-like shape. The effect of the synthesis temperature on the morphology of the Bi2Se3 nanostructures has also been investigated. It is found that the particle size increases with the synthesis temperature. Thermoelectric properties of the Bi2Se3 nanostructures were also measured, and the maximum value of dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) of 0.096 was obtained at 523 K.

Abstract: Researchers often rely on census data to provide us with information for local areas. In a study, we came across major discrepancies in rural Nepal between the number of women with a child under the age of two as estimated from the national census and the prevalence rate of this population in our local in-depth household survey. This study highlights why census data might not be as reliable as one would hope. In summary, researchers using census data in developing countries should include an element of quality control of the national dataset. We advise researchers to conduct a small survey from a random sample to provide an estimate of the likely population in the area under study.

Abstract: The management of the abdominal compartiment syndrome is still a controversial point nowadays. Its early diagnosis and treatment constitute a challenge for surgeons and physicians at the intensive care unit who have to face these cases . The physiopathologic changes that can occur can lead to the patients death, constituting pulmonary thromboembolism and multiorgan failure the principal causes of death. This paper presents the principal clinical parameters and technical procedures for its diagnosis and treatment with the aim of diminishing its morbi-mortality raits in our hospitals El manejo del síndrome compartimental abdominal continúa siendo controvertido en nuestros días. Tanto su diagnóstico oportuno como su tratamiento constituyen un reto para los cirujanos e intensivistas que se enfrentan a estos casos. Los cambios fisiopatológicos que ocurren pueden llevar a la muerte al enfermo; el tromboembolismo pulmonar y el fallo multiorgánico constituyen las principales causas. En este trabajo se exponen los principales parámetros clínicos y procedimientos técnicos para su diagnóstico y tratamiento, con el fin de disminuir su morbimortalidad en nuestras instituciones hospitalarias.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Apparatus for Precision Tests of Argon Interactions with Neutrino (CAP- TAIN) program is designed to make measurements of scientific importance to long-baseline neutrino physics and physics topics that will be explored by large underground detectors. The CAPTAIN detector is a liquid argon TPC deployed in a portable and evacuable cryostat. Five tons of liquid argon are instrumented with a 2,000 channel liquid argon TPC and a photon detection system. Subsequent to the commissioning phase, the detector will collect data in a high-energy neutron beamline that is part of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center to measure cross-sections of spallation products that are backgrounds to measurements of neutrinos from a supernova burst, cross-sections of events that mimic the electron neutrino appearance signal in long-baseline neutrino physics and neutron signatures to constrain neutrino energy reconstruction in LBNE's long-baseline program. Subsequent to the neutron running, the CAPTAIN detector will be moved to a neutrino source. Two possibilities are an on-axis run in the NuMI beamline at FNAL and a run in the neutrino source produced by the SNS. An on-axis run at NuMI produces more than one million events of interest in a two or three year run at neutrino energies between 1 and 10 GeV - complementary to the MicroBooNE experiment, which will measure similar interactions at a lower energy range - 0.5 to 2 GeV. At the SNS the neutrinos result from the decays stopped positively charged pions and muons yielding a broad spectrum up to 50 MeV. If located close to the spallation target, CAPTAIN can detect several thousand events per year in the same neutrino energy regime where neutrinos from a supernova burst are. Measurements at the SNS yield a first measurement of the cross- section of neutrinos on argon in this important energy regime.

Abstract: a descriptive and cross-sectional study of 50 women with some kind of alteration in their pap smear results in the last triennium, and who belong to the health area of ¨josé martí pérez¨ university polyclinic from santiago de cuba, was carried out during the first semester of 2008 in order to determine the gynecobstetric risk factors in the cervical cancer course. multiparity and the intergenesic period over a year, as well as the beginning of sexual intercourse in adolescence, the use of hormonal contraceptives, and history of sexually transmitted infections were predominant among them.

Abstract: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal de 50 mujeres con algún tipo de alteración en los resultados de sus pruebas citológicas en el último trienio, pertenecientes al área de salud del Policlínico Universitario "José Martí Pérez" de Santiago de Cuba, durante el primer semestre del 2008, a fin de determinar los factores de riesgo ginecoobstétricos en el desarrollo del cáncer cervicouterino, entre los cuales primaron la multiparidad y el período intergenésico superior a un a o, así como el inicio de las relaciones sexuales en la adolescencia, el uso de anticonceptivos hormonales y los antecedentes de infecciones sexualmente transmisibles.
