Abstract: Objective. This study examined the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), daytime sleepiness, functional activity, and objective physical activity. Setting. Abstract: The validation of NASA Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) satellite precipitation products is important for their credibility and utility within the larger community. This document defines GPM ground validation scientific objectives and several programmatic components for meeting those objectives. Multi-year, multi-sensor ground-based observation programs in a few locations are proposed to generate local observation products and global error covariance products. Focused measurement programs utilizing aircraft, ships, and ground-based measurements would fill in geographic and scientific gaps not addressed by the multi-year observing programs.

Abstract: The observation of the Earth’s free oscillation is an important way to study the Earth’s inner structure and geophysical parameters. Many geophysicists have investigated the Earth’s normal modes with strainmeters and spring gravimeters. Since the superconducting gravimeters appeared, people have gained a new kind of more stable instruments to detect the normal modes. The measurement for the Earth’s free oscillation with the superconducting gravimeters is one of the main goals of the Global Geodynamics Project. In this note, we have investigated the Earth’s normal modes excited by Peru Ms 7.9 Earthquake on June 23, 2001 with the superconducting gravimeter C032 at the Wuhan station. After having completed the subtraction of gravity tides with the 20th order polynomial fitting, and the correction for pressure and the analysis of the noise spectrum of the superconducting gravimeter, we accurately observed all base normal modes from 0 S 0 to 0 S 32 and the splittings of 0 S 2 and 0 S 3. Those results show a good agreement with the HB1 model.
Determination of geocenter variations

Abstract: The theory and methods to determine the geocenter variations by space geodetic techniques, especially by the satellite laser ranging have been discussed. Then the time series of geocenter variations have been derived from 11-year satellite laser ranging data to Lageos by the adopted methods. The results show that the standard deviations of monthly average values of geocenter in theX andY directions are 0.2–0.3 cm, and 1.0 cm in theZ direction. The root mean square of residual of the time series of ΔX, ΔY reaches about 0.7 cm. The amplitude of determined ‘peak to peak’ geocenter variation is about 5 cm.
High resolution bathymetry of China seas and their surroundings

Abstract: Based on the oceanic lithospheric flexure and the worldwide bathymetric data ETOPO5, the high resolution bathymetry of the China seas and their surroundings is computed from altimeter derived gravity anomalies. The new bathymetry obtained by this study is higher resolution and accuracy than the widely used ETOPO5 data, meanwhile it shows clearly the seafloor, the tectonic characteristics and the geodynamical processes in the China seas.

Abstract: A tropical squall line that passed over the ship array of the Global Atmospheric Research Programme's Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) on 9-10 August 1974 is analyzed. This squall line was similar to squall systems that passed over the GATE ship array on four other days. It began as a purely convective cloud line, then developed an associated stratiform cloud and precipitation area. The stratiform rain built up to a maximum amount over a period of 8 h, then gradually diminished over a 6 h period. This stratiform rain is estimated to have accounted for 32% of the squall system's total precipitation. As in other GATE squall lines, the upper-level cloud shield from which the stratiform rain fell, was advected slowly forward of the line during the system's lifetime, the leading line of convective clouds consisted of transient smaller-scale convective elements, which lent the line an irregular shape and pulsatory movement, and the stratiform portion of the system was characterized by the development of a mid-level mesoscale vortex similar to that seen in other GATE cases.
Comprehensive comparison and analysis of the tidal gravity observations obtained with superconducting gravimeters at stations in China, Belgium and France

Abstract: The long-term tidal gravity observations of about 27 a obtained with superconducting gravimeters (SG) at stations in Wuhan (China), Brussels (Belgium) and Strasbourg (France) are analyzed comprehensively. The quality factors of these observations at various stations are obtained and the tidal parameters are determined accurately. The efficiency when using various procedures on improving accuracy of the tidal parameters is discussed. The loading corrections on tidal parameters are carried out based on the global ocean tidal models. The correlations between the observed residuals and air pressure change are studied, the atmospheric gravity admittances in both temporal and frequency domains are determined, and the possible reasons of inducing the discrepancy between the observed tidal parameters and those in the standard tidal models are studied.

AMG 837: A Novel GPR40/FFA1 Agonist that Enhances Insulin Secretion and Lowers Glucose Levels in Rodents

Abstract: Agonists of GPR40 (FFA1) have been proposed as a means to treat type 2 diabetes. Through lead optimization of a high throughput screening hit, we have identified a novel GPR40 agonist called AMG 837. The objective of these studies was to understand the preclinical pharmacological properties of AMG 837. The activity of AMG 837 on GPR40 was characterized through GTPγS binding, inositol phosphate accumulation and Ca2+ flux assays. Activity of AMG 837 on insulin release was assessed on isolated primary mouse islets. To determine the anti-diabetic activity of AMG 837 in vivo, we tested AMG 837 using a glucose tolerance test in normal Sprague-Dawley rats and obese Zucker fatty rats. AMG 837 was a potent partial agonist in the calcium flux assay on the GPR40 receptor and potentiated glucose stimulated insulin secretion in vitro and in vivo. Acute administration of AMG 837 lowered glucose excursions and increased glucose stimulated insulin secretion during glucose tolerance tests in both normal and Zucker fatty rats. The improvement in glucose excursions persisted following daily dosing of AMG 837 for 21-days in Zucker fatty rats. Preclinical studies demonstrated that AMG 837 was a potent GPR40 partial agonist which lowered post-prandial glucose levels. These studies support the potential utility of AMG 837 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Improved isolation of good-quality total RNA from the optic stalk of Mud crab, Scylla paramamosain

Abstract: an improved and efficient protocol was developed based on the takara rnaiso plus kit (code: d9108a) for isolating good-quality total rna from the optic stalk of mud crab, scylla paramamosain. the protocol was based on the trizol method with modifications. the carapace overlapping the optic stalk was retained with rna in regular protocol. in order to remove the abundant deposition correlative with the carapace which makes the isolation of rna particularly difficult, 5m potassium acetate solution (ph = 6.0) was added before the precipitation of rna, and the temperature of rna deposition was also decreased to -70oc to ensure the stabilization of rna. good-quality total rna from the optic stalk of s. paramamosain could be easily isolated with this modified protocol and three conventional methods were also employed to confirm the quality of rna. this improved method would be helpful in facilitating molecular research of crabs involving rna from the optic stalk.
