Abstract: It is possible that physical activity practice affects the quality of life of any subject, independently of age, sex and ethnicity. Therefore, this issue has received increasing attention. The aim of this study was to analyze through systematic review, national data about the relationship between physical activity and quality of life, as well as, to indicate future lines of research. It was carried out a systematic review in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO). Only Brazilian original articles were taken into count. Statistical analysis was composed by signal test and Fisher’s exact test, being significance set at p<5%. In all analyzed studies (n=6; 100%), sample size ranged from 30 to 863 subjects. Higher number of articles was published in last two years, and many analyses involved elderly (66.7%; p=0.404). Quality of life was measured by two questionnaires: SF-36 and World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL). There was less articles analyzing men, comparing with women. In all analyzed articles, physical activity was positively related to better quality of life, independently of age. In summary, quality of life seems positively related to higher physical activity independently of age, however, more studies are necessary.

Abstract: The practice of resistance training (RT) has been stimulated by important societies related to sports medicine and prevention/treatment of some diseases of musculoskeletal order and thus their practice for the treatment of chronic diseases has been discussed. However, there are severe limitations in the experimental design of many studies, this limitation creates bias in its application for such purposes. The aim of this study was to analyze, using a model of systematic review of national literature, the methodological quality of the papers used in weight training in adults and thus identify possible gaps in the national literature. A systematic literature review was conducted in an electronic database. The electronic search was performed in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Among the detected items, inclusion criteria were established: (i) original study involving the practice of weight training, (ii) study conducted in Brazil, (iii) is not a review article, (iv) does not involve other age groups, as children and adolescents. The statistical analysis was made using the chi-square test to compare proportions and the Fisher exact test. Among the studies that examined health-related outcomes, 75% used a control group, while only 26.7% of the studies did not analyze health used a control group. Only 47.8% of the studies used the 1RM test to prescribe intensity. Of the 23 articles analyzed only 30.4% used prior to the familiarization training protocol. There are more scientific studies male samples. Finally, our findings support the conclusion that there is a significant lack of discretion in the conduct of national studies involving RT. In addition, there is little national information on the RT to improve health and that this absence is most felt in specific age groups such as children and adolescents.

Abstract: karate practice can promote beneficial adaptations on the health-related components of physical fitness. among the components, the maximum oxygen uptake (vo2max) is an important indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness, as it is also a strong and independent predictor of the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and all other causes. previous studies have evaluated the heart rate (hr) responses in the karate modality during protocols elaborated by researchers who simulated training. however, the results should be carefully interpreted, since elaborated protocols can compromise the ecological validity of the hr behavior. thus, the aim of the study was to monitor the hr to investigate the distribution of intensity during a karate training session (ts) with ecological validity preserved. nine athletes (m (sd) = 22 (5.2) years; 60.3 (12.9) weight; 170.0 (0.10) height; 170.0 (0.10) cm; 11.6 (5.7) % fat) performed a maximal incremental test (it) and one ts with continuous hr monitoring, subsequently distributed by edward′s method. the mean ts duration was 91.3 (11.9) min (ic95% = 82.0 - 100.5). the values of average and maximum hr of the ts were equivalent to 72 % (ic95% = 66 - 78 %) and 94 % (ic95% = 89 - 99 %) respectively, of maximum hr reached in the incremental test (hrmax). during 79.9 % (ic95% = 65.7 - 94.1 %) of the total time of ts the athletes remained at intensity above 60% of hrmax. thus, it was concluded that the ts lies within the acsm recommendations concerning intensity, duration and weekly frequency, presenting itself as an interesting alternative of exercise to promote cardiorespiratory fitness.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between self-perceived quality of life and physical activity in Brazilian older adults. We investigated 199 individuals (117 men and 82 women) aged between 60 to 70 years old, employees of a public university. Physical activity was estimated by the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Self-perceived quality of life was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Bref) questionnaire composed of four domains: physical, psychological, social relationship and environment. There was no difference in self-perceived quality of life between men and women. In contrast, quality of life was associated with physical activity even after adjustment for gender, schooling and income. The physical domain presented the strongest association with physical inactivity (Odds Ratio = 2.70, 95% CI 1.87 3.52). Only the environment domain evaluated by WHOQOL-Bref was not associated to physical inactivity. Among the older, improved self-perceived quality of life is positively associated to physical activity.

Abstract: This study examined the relationships between nutritional status, physical activity, waist circumference, and fl exibility in boys. The sample comprised 74 boys (11,8 years old, SD= 1,6). The following were measured: body weight, height, waist circumference, physical activity, body fat (bioelectrical impedance) and fl exibility. Body fat percentage was calculated, and the children were classifi ed as well nourished (G1), overweight (G2), or obese (G3) according to the age and sex adjusted cutoffs described by Taylor et al.18. The statistical procedures adopted were: mean, standard deviation, analysis of variance, chi-square test, linear correlation and binary logistic regression. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. There was a statistical difference between G3 and G1 in flexibility scores (p = 0.048). Obese and inactive boys were more than twice as likely to exhibit a poor fl exibility score than well nourished and active boys, respectively (odds ratio= 2.9; p = 0.046, and 5.1; p = 0.047, respectively). This study identifi ed the existence of relationship and association between obesity, physical inactivity and poor performance in fl exibility test. A amostra compreendeu 74 meninos (11,8±1,6 anos).

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between different body fat indicators, habitual physical activity and exposure to sedentary behavior in pre-adolescent males. The sample involved 60 subjects from 10 to 14 years old. The used body fat indicators were: the Body Mass Index, waist circumference, the sum of eight skinfolds, and estimation of percent of body fat using bioelectric impedance. The indicators of physical activity and sedentary behavior were assessed through a questionnaire. Descriptive statistical procedures were: mean, medium, standard deviations, minimum and maximum values, as well as the Spearman correlation. The SPSS software was used and P values lower than 5% were considered statistically signifi cant. None of the body fat indicators presented signifi cant correlation (p> 0.05) with indicators of habitual physical activity, although, all of them were moderately associated with time spent in sedentary activities (Body Mass Index: r= 0.42, waist circumference: r= 0.43, sum of skinfolds: r= 0.43 and percent of body fat: r= 0.43). Therefore, it is concluded that exposure to sedentary behavior correlates with body composition in pre-adolescent males aged 10 to 14 years.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of overweight and obesity among schoolchildren attending private schools in the town of Presidente Prudente, SP, Brazil. The sample comprised 1,215 male and female students with an age range of 10 to 17 years. Body mass and height measurements were evaluated. Nutritional status was identifi ed by means of Body Mass Index and the international table of reference values proposed by Cole et al.12 Data are represented in the form of means, standard deviations and frequencies. The Chi-square test was used to compare frequencies and Student’s t test was applied to and means. P values below 5% were considered statistically significant and all statistical analysis were performed using SPSS 10.0 dedicated software. The observed prevalence rate of overweight and obesity was 35.7% for males, 20% for females (p = 0.001) and 28.6% for the whole sample. Therefore, this study concludes that the high overweight and obesity rates observed among students from the town of Presidente Prudente, particularly among the male sex, should be seen as a warning and indicate the need for interventions by health professional in the school environment.
