Abstract: nitrogen and phosphorus are primary nutrients, common constituents of fertilizers, detergents, and domestic and industrial wastewater discharges. these unloadings to rivers and subsequently to lake maracaibo cause nutrient and mineral enrichment, producing a secondary eutrophication on rivers and detained waters at deltas. lake maracaibo system is a basin of extraordinary importance because of its energetic resources, biodiversity and the wide number of aquatic organisms, which represents an important economic source for the country. however, activities being developed on the basin such as agricultural, cattle raising, mining and industrials, have modified the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of both water and soil generating an accelerated eutrophication process, as well as, the appearance of dense populations of the aquatic weed lemna obscura, generating social, environmental and economic impacts. the following river basins were evaluated: limón, palmar, santa ana, catatumbo, escalante, chama, motatán, misoa, machango and pueblo viejo. these rivers contribute with 80% of the freshwater to the lake maracaibo system, being the catatumbo river contribution 60% of the volume. total nitrogen and total phosphorus average of rivers that drain to the lake, was 1.20 and 0.84 mgl-1, respectively, contributing significantly with the process of eutrophication, that combined with the expansion of the agricultural borders, have caused deforestation, erosion and contamination, altering landscape and water availability, as well as an important increase of nutrients in lake maracaibo.

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2008000200010
Abstract: this study evaluates the role of the number of secondary diagnoses for calculating the charlson comorbidity index (cci) in risk adjustment of the 90-day mortality rate after hip fracture surgical repair. comorbidities were selected by reviewing the medical records of 390 patients 50 years of age or older in a teaching hospital in rio de janeiro from 1995 to 2000. logistic regression models were fitted including the variables age, sex, and cci. the cci was calculated based on: (1) all patients' comorbidities; (2) only the comorbidity with the highest weight; and (3) a single randomly selected comorbidity. there was a gradient in the prediction of the cci mortality rate when all comorbidities were used (or = 6.53; 95%ci: 2.27-18.77, for scores 3 3). the predictive capacity of the cci was observed even when it was calculated using only one comorbidity: with the highest weight (or = 2.83; 95%ci: 1.11-7.22); and randomly selected (or = 2.90; 95%ci: 1.07-7.81). using all comorbidities for cci calculation is important. severity indices based on a single comorbidity can be useful for risk adjustment procedures.

Abstract: the objective of the present study was to evaluate, by means of a systematic literature review, the adherence and motivation presented by diabetic patients that participate in health intervention programs, which stimulate the adoption of a healthy life style. the ingestion of an adequate diet and the increase in physical activity, focusing in the disease perception, considering the diabetic patient knowledge, making evident the recommendations that should be followed to reach a better life quality, demonstrating that it is possible to live well even if you have a chronic disease such as diabetes. a literature research in the main public health databases (medline, lilacs, scielo, among others) was conducted from 1994 to 2006. a total of 37 studies focused in the interaction among the subject health and disease versus diabetes were selected. this study mentions some daily difficulties felt by the diabetic patient and his family to control the disease. these difficulties can directly affect the patient adhesion to the prescribed treatment. therefore, the behavioral and emotional factors presented by each patient must be considered when the health activities are being planned to reach total assistance to this population.

Abstract: Pituitary adenomas comprise approximately 10–15% of intracranial tumors and result in morbidity associated with altered hormonal patterns, therapy and compression of adjacent sella turcica structures. The use of functional foods containing carotenoids contributes to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and vascular disorders. In this study, we evaluated the influence of different concentrations of beta-carotene and lycopene on cell viability, colony formation, cell cycle, apoptosis, hormone secretion, intercellular communication and expression of connexin 43, Skp2 and p27kip1 in ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma cells, the AtT20 cells, incubated for 48 and 96 h with these carotenoids. We observed a decrease in cell viability caused by the lycopene and beta-carotene treatments; in these conditions, the clonogenic ability of the cells was also significantly decreased. Cell cycle analysis revealed that beta-carotene induced an increase of the cells in S and G2/M phases; furthermore, lycopene increased the proportion of these cells in G0/G1 while decreasing the S and G2/M phases. Also, carotenoids induced apoptosis after 96 h. Lycopene and beta-carotene decreased the secretion of ACTH in AtT20 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Carotenoids blocked the gap junction intercellular communication. In addition, the treatments increased the expression of phosphorylated connexin43. Finally, we also demonstrate decreased expression of S-phase kinase-associated protein 2 (Skp2) and increased expression of p27kip1 in carotenoid-treated cells. These results show that lycopene and beta-carotene were able to negatively modulate events related to the malignant phenotype of AtT-20 cells, through a mechanism that could involve changes in the expression of connexin 43, Skp2 and p27kip1; and suggest that these compounds might provide a novel pharmacological approach to the treatment of Cushing’s disease.
"Conquistar a terra, dominar a água, sujeitar a floresta": Getúlio Vargas e a revista "Cultura Política" redescobrem a Amaz?nia (1940-1941)

Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1981-81222010000200015
Abstract: the article analyzes the amazon in the social thought of brazilian estado novo (1937-1945), when events and governmental projects as the "marcha para o oeste" and the "discurso do rio amazonas" represented more attention of central government to the region. since 1941, articles about the amazon were published in the journal "cultura política", issued by the departamento de imprensa e propaganda (department of press and publicity), one of the principal means of publicizing the social thought of estado novo. concepts of euclides da cunha, alberto rangel, and alfredo ladislau about climate, race and civilization were suitable for the production of these texts with the aim of building political ideas by the state. thus, our analysis highlight continuities and discontinuities between the literary production of the brazilian first republic and the official ideas formulated by the dictatorship of getúlio vargas.
Evidences from link between quality and loyalty in eservice:an empirical study

Sistemas & Gest?o , 2007,
Abstract: There has been a lot of research validating the link between service quality and customerloyalty in traditional (bricks-and-mortar) services. However, despite the strong growth of eservicesin recent years, there is still little rigorous empirical research examining this link insuch settings. The interest in examining this link in an e-service setting is in validating eservicequality as a lever that managers of e-service operations can employ to drivecustomer loyalty and, ultimately, profitability. Based on data from an online questionnaire ofcustomers of an e-banking service, this study employs structural equation modelling toexamine the link between web site quality and customer loyalty. We found a strong andsignificant link between the two constructs, suggesting that this relationship also holds in eservicesettings. This is an important result, given that loyalty has been generally consideredharder to achieve in e-services than in traditional services.

17 e 41, além do art. 313, IV do Código de Processo Penal, nao devem ser aplicados, pois incompatíveis com a Constituicao Federal.
