Are High Energy Cosmic Rays Magnetic Monopoles?

Abstract: We argue that magnetic monopoles can not be associated to the highest energy cosmic rays as recently suggested. Both the observed spectrum and the arrival direction disagree with observation.

Abstract: in cuba, mortality and morbidity of cardiovascular disease is high, justifying the study of physiopathologic mechanisms associating the syndrome of sleep obstructive apnea syndrome (soas) with cardiovascular diseases. patients presenting with soas have anatomic, muscular, and neurologic factors favoring closure of high airway (ha). obstruction provokes hypoxia, increases of a negative intrathoracic pressure, and sympathetic discharges associated with frequent awakenings. the high intrathoracic negative pressure decreases the left ventricular fill, and the cardiac output. as an adaptation response to this dysfunction, it is produced a sympathetic activation as well as a release of atrial natriuretic peptide raising very much the arterial pressure. episodes of hypoxia-re-oxygenation in these patients produce an imbalance in vascular homeostasis, and an endothelial dysfunction, favoring low-density lipoproteins oxidation, generating vascular structural changes and also favoring appearance of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract: En Cuba la morbimortalidad de las enfermedades cardiovasculares es alta, lo que motivó a estudiar los mecanismos fisiopatológicos que asocian el síndrome de apnea obstructiva del sue o (SAOS) con las enfermedades cardiovasculares. Los pacientes con SAOS presentan factores anatómicos, musculares y neurológicos que favorecen el cierre de la vía aérea superior (VAS). La obstrucción provoca hipoxia, incrementos de la presión negativa intratorácica y descargas simpáticas asociadas a los despertares frecuentes. La presión negativa intratorácica elevada disminuye el llenado ventricular izquierdo y el gasto cardiaco. Como respuesta adaptativa a esta disfunción se produce activación simpática y liberación de péptido natriurético atrial que elevan considerablemente la presión arterial. Los episodios de hipoxia-reoxigenación en estos pacientes producen desequilibrio en la homeostasia vascular y disfunción endotelial, favoreciendo la oxidación de las lipoproteínas de baja densidad, lo que genera cambios estructurales vasculares. Todos estos cambios favorecen la aparición de enfermedades cardiovasculares. Application of a distributed physically-based hydrological model to a medium size catchment

Abstract: Physically based distributed models are rarely calibrated and validated thoroughly because of lack of data. In practice, validation is limited to comparison of simulated and predicted discharges in a catchment, or of simulated and observed piezometric levels in some calibrated wells. Rarely, internal noncalibrated wells or discharge stations are included in model evaluation. In this study, the fully distributed physically based MIKE SHE model was applied to the 600-km2 catchment of the Grote and the Kleine Gete, Belgium. Firstly, the MIKE SHE model was calibrated against both daily discharge measurements and observed water levels and then validated using a simple split-sample test. The observed discharges were simulated successfully in both the calibration and the validation period, while results for the piezometric levels differed considerably among the wells. In addition, a multi-site validation test for 2 internal discharge stations and 6 observation wells showed inferior results for the discharge stations and comparable results for the water table wells. As in the calibration and the split-sample test validation, water table fluctuations were predicted well in some wells, but with little agreement in others. This may be due to scale effects and to the poor quality of the data in certain areas of the catchment. Mainly, the lack of data made it difficult to simulate time series of internal catchment variables with acceptable accuracy so that even the calibrated and validated model could not provide reliable predictions of the water table over the entire catchment. Abstract: An important issue was raised for discussion trough the last decade regarding the meaning of brand equity. Different forms of analysis and estimation criteria have been applied, and that is the reason for the current ambiguity on its meaning. In this article, we present a theoretical frame were several forms of study and criteria for brand equity estimation are empirically analysed. Using six different brands of training shoes, seven estimation variables are empirically analysed in accordance with the opinions given by a sample of users for these different brands. By means of this analysis, it is our aim to contribute to a better knowledge on he concept of brand equity.

Abstract:
Carbamates are molecules that have different types of biological activities and provide a particular chemical control against ticks. The new structures of the proposed compounds were optimized and synthetized respectively, through a molecular model using the methods:PM3, HF and DFT applying the B3LYP functional, with the basis 6-31+G(d) and 6-311+G(d,p), BVP86 and PBEPBE with 6-31+G(d) and the vibrational frequencies computed. These calculated frequencies were compared with the experimental ones to determine the most accurate level of theory for the prediction of vibrational frequencies of the compounds. The best results were obtained through HF/631+G(d). Additionally, we report a modification to obtain this type of compounds, and based on the amino-dehalogenation of ethyl chloroformate, different benzyl ethyl carbamates were synthesized modifying the base molecule. The performances obtained were compared to others already reported. The methodology used allowed us to synthesize new carbamates using benzylamine derivatives through a modification on the basic catalysis of the addition-elimination reaction.

Abstract: the problem founded when restoring partially edentulous patients with osseointegrated implants is whether the implants should be connected to, or separated from the natural teeth. this dilemma is caused by the difference in mobility of teeth and osseointegrated implants. brunski reported differences in intrusive stiffness for implants and teeth. however, there are several benefits for implants used in conjunction with natural teeth, which include: reduction of the number of implants needed for restoration, lower cost and maintenance of proprioception. this article presents a review on biomechanical aspects and some considerations of splinting teeth and implants, rigid and no rigid connections between implants and teeth are discussed. there are several areas of interest regarding the connection of implants and natural teeth, wich may provide different amounts of support depending on periodontal status. for a particular clinical situation, the selection of the tipe of the restorative interproximal connection, and quality of implant and teeth support are main issues.
Caracterización de Plásmidos de Acinetobacter Baumannii en tres centros hospitalarios

Abstract: acinetobacter baumannii is an important etiological agent causing nosocomial infections. antibiotics resistance patterns and plasmid profiles analysis of selected 34 nosocomial strains isolated from three hospitals were determined. the majority of isolates (50%) were recovered from respiratory tract and intensive care unit. high level of resistance for different kind of antimicrobials has been observed, incluindg imipenem, meropenen and beta-lactam antibiotics. plasmid profiles suggested a high variability. a plasmid < 23 kb was associated with the resistance in some isolates. plasmid dna analysis proved to be useful in epidemiological typing of a baumannii strains and may serve as a complementary typing system to traditional epidemiological methods.
