Estado e economia na Coreia do Sul - do Estado desenvolvimentista à crise asiática e à recupera??o posterior
Guimar?es, Alexandre Queiroz;
Revista de Economia Política , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572010000100003
Abstract: the state and the economy in south korea: from the developmentist state to the asian crisis and later recovery. the article focuses on the institutions of south korean capitalism and on the interactions between the state and the economy. the economic model in south korea was characterized by a very interventionist state, which played a very active role in the process of industrialization. however, south korea suffered a severe crisis in 1997, attributed by many authors to the distortions inherent to strong state intervention. the article shows that the crisis was a result of the combination between internal economic fragilities and a rapid process of financial deregulation, which undermined the state's capacity of control. the crisis, nevertheless, does not disqualify the role of the national institutions in the very successful process of industrialization. despite the reforms, the korean capitalism conserves much of the previous model of business organization and industrial relations. the state continues strong and played active role in the process of economic reforms. there are, nevertheless, doubts about the impacts of the reforms and the new configuration of korean capitalism. they will depend on the current transformations in world economy and in the east asian countries.
The determinants of male retirement in urban Brazil
Queiroz, Bernardo Lanza;
Nova Economia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-63512007000100001
Abstract: i use matched and unmatched pme data to study the determinants of male's retirement over the past two decades. the pme is a very rich source of data, although not very used. the matched data consists of a series of short panel data constructed by matching individual records across adjacent years of the pme. some patterns i find are not surprising. for example, probability of being retired increases monotonically with age, and the strong dependence of labor transition on other individual characteristics such as education. some other patterns are more interesting and surprising. the labor force participation rates of older workers in the main metropolitan areas are lower than what is observed in the rest of the country. the main explanation is that workers in the main metropolitan areas had earlier enrollment into the system and they also have better access to early retirement benefits. i also observed an inverse u-shaped relation between education and retirement. less and more educated workers have similar retirement patterns during the period studied. last, i find that more educated workers, and those in the formal sector, have higher retirement probabilities than less educated and those in the informal labor market.
Entre o canto e a caneta: oralidade, escrita e conhecimento entre os Guarani Mbya
Testa, Adriana Queiroz;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022008000200006
Abstract: the theme of the relations between orality and writing can be found in most studies and programs dedicated to the issue of the school education of indigenous populations, but it has seldom been taken as the central problem in understanding the teaching-learning processes in the contexts where schools take part. in fact, authors that deal with this question emphasize almost exclusively writing, and tend to forget about orality. in this sense, associated to the need for a deeper theoretical discussion, one can observe the lack of analyses dedicated to comprehend the role and meaning of writing and orality among the various indigenous peoples. with the purpose of contributing to expand and advance the debate, this article seeks to discuss the theme based on an approach that allows us to move between the reading of specialized texts and reports that register interpretations by mbya guarani individuals. the testimonies collected and transcribed during seven years of research and living with the mbya in different villages in the south and southeast regions of the country allowed us to reconceptualize orality and writing as important aspects within a wider group of processes of production, acquisition and transmission of knowledge. from this viewpoint, education is conceived in a wide sense that cannot be reduced to schooling.
A reserva de desenvolvimento sustentável Mamirauá
Queiroz, Helder L.;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142005000200011
Abstract: protected areas are still one of the most effective tools to promote bio-diversity protection and conservation in the amazon. the importance of protected areas of sustainable use in the present scenario is increasing. among the proposed conservation models for protected areas of sustainable use, the sustainable development reserve model is not only viable, but extremely successful. in the present paper the main aspects of such model are presented, with some illustration from it most well known representative, the mamirauá sustainable development reserve (msdr), and with some discussion regarding the success and validation of the model through its replication for other sites in the amazon.
Joaquim Murtinho, banqueiro: notas sobre a experiência do Banco Rio e Mato Grosso (1891-1902)
Queiroz, Paulo Roberto Cimó;
Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-21862010000100006
Abstract: the rio and mato grosso bank, founded in rio de janeiro in 1891 and closed in 1902, was the first bank to operate in mato grosso. based upon documents of the bank itself, this paper aims at tracing its trajectory and discussing its connections with economics and politics of mato grosso. it follows that the bank's action in this state corresponded to a broad plan and contributed to the process of modernization and economic growth - although this growth, being limited to primary-export activities, has been characteristically exclusive. it is also suggested how economic activities, in mato grosso, could be affected by political infighting.
Tradu??o criativa, diagrama e cálculo ic?nico
Queiroz, Jo?o;
Alea : Estudos Neolatinos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-106X2010000200010
Abstract: the icon is operationally defined as a sign whose manipulation reveals, by direct observation of its intrinsic property, some information on its object. this definition represents a detrivialization of the concept of icon as a similar entity. here we explore haroldo de campos' concept of "iconic translation", and we develop this concept in a new direction, based on an operational criterion that associates the icon to diagrams, iconic signs of relationship. it is a well-known argument that creative translation recreates isomorphic (or paramorphic) relations between different levels of description (or organization) of the translated sign. this idea is framed here by an operational concept of icon capable of revealing a definite form of a relationship. in the end, i exemplify my argument showing a case of translation of john donne, by augusto de campos
Disposi??es técnicas e diretrizes para projeto de habita??es sociais evolutivas
Brand?o, Douglas Queiroz;
Ambiente Construído , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-86212011000200006
Abstract: the practice of designing housing projects considering only the needs of the construction phase and the first occupation of the dwellings often leads to difficulties and additional costs in adapting the house in order to fulfill changing user requirements. this article highlights the importance of including flexibility in terms of space, building materials and components in the design of social housing projects. the aim of the study is to propose a set of technical recommendations, based on the literature and on problems identified in practice, in order to allow easy and harmonious changes in dwellings in the course of its life cycle. the focus of this study is the typology of detached houses for single families. this study was based on the observation of a sample of houses from the state of mato grosso, between 2003 and 2006, and was divided into two phases. in the first phase, the changes and extensions made by the users were classified and analyzed in order to identify typical changes and the most common problems found in the extension of those houses. in the second phase, the study proposed some technical recommendations, which were connected to a set of flexibility strategies and principles that promote adaptability in house building. the study also aimed to reflect on existing design and production practices in social housing projects in brazil, emphasizing the importance of the concept of adaptable housing, and suggest greater openness to new designs that allow a stronger appropriation of the dwelling by the users.
