Abstract: In this study, several vegetation indices were examined in order to determine the most sensitive vegetation index for monitoring southern Appalachian wetlands. Three levels of platforms (in situ, airborne, and satellite) for sensors were also examined in conjunction with vegetation indices. Net primary production (NPP) data were gathered to use as a measure of wetland function. Along with the in situ radiometers, National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) data and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) data were gathered in order to calculate vegetation indices at three platforms. At the in situ level, VARI700 was the most sensitive vegetation index in terms of NPP (r2 = 0.65, p < 0.05). At the airborne level, the NDVI was the most sensitive vegetation index to NPP (r2 = 0.35, p = 0.11). At the satellite level, the DVI appeared to have a positive relationship with NPP. For most indices there was a drop in the coefficient of determination with NPP when the platform altitude increased, with the exception of NDVI when increasing altitude from in situ to airborne. This study provides a novel methodology comparing reflectance and vegetation indices at three platform levels.
Vehicle Position Awareness in Roadside-to-Vehicle Communication

Abstract: The roadside-to-vehicle communication system is an infrastructure network to be deployed along the roads, which is an important part of the vehicular Ad Hoc networks for future intelligent transportation systems. Vehicle position estimation is a key technology for roadside-to-vehicle communication. In this study, a roadside-to-vehicle communication system is proposed where a camera is fixed on the roadside infrastructure for taking snapshoot of the target vehicle. Then target detecting and pixels counting is performed through certain image processing technology. After that, the function relationship between the vehicular pixels and the distance between the vehicle and the infrastructure is obtained by using the machine learning method, whose training data comes from our field trial. The vehicle position information acquired will be used for the parameters selection of OFDM transmission. The simulation results show that in the vehicular wireless fading channel model, the roadside-to-vehicle system which has position awareness can effectively implement adaptive modulation and coding scheme and, thereby, achieve greater throughput over a fixed modulation and coding scheme.
Cytogenetical and ultrastructural effects of copper on root meristem cells of Allium sativum L.

Abstract: Different copper concentrations, as well as different exposure times, were applied to investigate both cytogenetical and ultrastructural alterations in garlic (Allium sativum L.) meristem cells. Results showed that the mitotic index decreased progressively when either copper concentration or exposure time increased. C-mitosis, anaphase bridges, chromosome stickiness and broken nuclei were observed in the copper treated root tip cells. Some particulates containing the argyrophilic NOR-associated proteins were distributed in the nucleus of the root-tip cells and the amount of this particulate material progressively increased with increasing exposure time. Finally, the nucleolar material was extruded from the nucleus into the cytoplasm. Also, increased dictyosome vesicles in number, formation of cytoplasmic vesicles containing electron dense granules, altered mitochondrial shape, disruption of nuclear membranes, condensation of chromatin material, disintegration of organelles were observed. The mechanisms of detoxification and tolerance of copper are briefly discussed.
Image-based Position Estimation and Adaptive Modulation Coding in Vehicular Communication

Abstract: Vehicle position estimation is a key technology for Inter-Vehicle Communications, while template matching can be used to get information of vehicular position. In the paper, a simplified template matching, namely area-based template match is considered. A vehicular communication system designed for wireless data application is proposed where a camera is fixed in a vehicle which is served as a base station. By means of comparison between the outline area of vehicular image and reference templates, the base station can obtain the position estimation of the vehicle. The reference templates can be pre-calculated from a group of field experiment data. Based on supervised learning, we develop an image-based vehicle position estimation method and evaluate its effect on an adaptive coding modulation scheme. The computer simulation results show that in the wireless fading channel with the OFDM physical model, compared with fixed modulation coding scheme, the studied adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme taking account of the position estimation can gain greater throughput.
Discovery and SARs of Trans-3-Aryl Acrylic Acids and Their Analogs as Novel Anti- Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) Agents

Abstract: A series of trans-3-aryl acrylic acids 1–27 and their derivatives 28–34 were prepared and evaluated for their antiviral activity against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) for the first time. The bioassay results showed that most of these compounds exhibited good antiviral activity against TMV, of which compounds 1, 5, 6, 20, 27 and 34 exhibited significantly higher activity against TMV than commercial Ribavirin both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, these compounds have more simple structure than commercial Ribavirin, and can be synthesized more efficiently. These new findings demonstrate that trans-3-aryl acrylic acids and their derivatives represent a new template for antiviral studies and could be considered for novel therapy against plant virus infection.

Abstract: This study observed the immune response induced by a HSP65 DNA vaccine fused with UbGR against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. BALB/c mice were inoculated with HSP65 DNA vaccine, UbGR-fused HSP65 DNA vaccine (Ub-GR-HSP65) and blank vector respectively. HSP65 DNA vaccine elicited a Thl-polarized immune response. The Thl-type cytokine (IFN-γ) and proliferative T cell responses from spleen were improved significantly in UbGR-HSP65 group, compared with those in HSP65 DNA vaccine group. Furthermore, this fusion DNA vaccine also led to an increased ratio of IgG2ato IgGl and the cytotoxicity of T cells. IFN-γ intracellular staining of splenocytes indicated that UbGR-HSP65 fusion DNA vaccine could activate CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, with much higher CD8+ T cells. Thus, this study demonstrated that the UbGR fusion could improve HSP65-specific cellular immune responses, which is helpful to protect against TB infection.
Postharvest Low Temperature Conditioning Reduces Peel Browning and Improves Fruit Quality in Storage and Subsequent Shelf Life of Huangguan Pear  [PDF]

Abstract: Huangguan pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd cv. Huangguan) is a pear cultivar that rapidly developed in China. However, rapid postharvest browning appearing in fruit peel and core during storage and shelf life pose a challenge for their marketing. The potential for low temperature conditioning (LTC) treatment to inhibit peel browning and improve quality of Huangguan pears in storage and shelf life was investigated. Pears were treated at 8 - 9 for 1, 3, 6 and 9 d, respectively, physiological indexes, including peel and core browning, core breakdown, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and ethanol content were determined and quality in storage period and shelf life was evaluated in this paper. LTC treatment alleviated peel browning and core browning either in storage or shelf life remarkably; it also delayed the decline of firmness, total soluble solids and titratable acidity in storage to some extent, inhibited ethanol and MDA content both in storage and shelf life effectively and maintained juiciness and crispness of pear fruit in shelf life. These results showed that LTC can serve as an important tool for the regulation of Huangguan pears external and internal quality in storage and shelf life with economic benefits and LTC treatment for 6 d was the optimum condition in the present study.
The Changes of Nutrition Labeling of Packaged Food in Hangzhou in China during 2008~2010

Abstract: Objective To understand the changes of the nutrition labeling of packaged food in China two years after the promulgation of the Regulation for Food Nutrition Labeling, which encourages food manufacturers to identify nutrition labeling. Methods Investigators copied out the nutrition information panel, nutrition claim and nutrient function claim of packaged food in a supermarket with prepared questionnaire and finished normative judgment in 2008 and 2010. Results 4693 and 5526 kinds of packaged food were investigated separately. Nutrition information panel, nutrition claim and nutrient function claim were found on the food label of 27.6%, 13.0% and 1.9% of packaged food respectively in 2008, while 35.1%, 7.7% and 2.3% in 2010. The nutrition information panel which labeled energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate and sodium was 597(43.8%) and 1661(85.9%) in 2008 and 2010, only 134(9.8%) and 985(51.0%) nutrition information panel were totally normalized. Nutrition claim and nutrient function claim focused on vitamin, mineral and dietary fiber. The total qualified proportions for nutrition claim were increased significantly for most of the nutrients, except for cholesterol. There were 6 (6.4%) and 5 (3.9%) nutrient function claims with hinting of therapeutic effects on diseases separately. Conclusion Although the voluntary regulation remarkably improved the level of normalization for nutrition labeling, its role on the prevalence was minus. It's imperative to enforce nutrition labeling for not only China but also other countries, and furthermore, health education on nutrition labeling should be initiated to support the policy.
