Research direction for syndromes of traditional Chinese medicine: differentiating diseases from syndromes and differentiating syndromes from diseases

Abstract: By historical review on integrative research of syndrome differentiation and disease differentiation and considering the scientific research method of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the syndrome is the key subject of clinical study on TCM. During the recent 10 years or more, many new diseases and diagnostic approaches have been found and developed in Western medicine, while in TCM, the advances in research on syndrome can not keep up with the requirements of clinical practice. This problem was caused by three matters as follows: (1) Syndrome differentiation and its classification have been conservative and lack of new discovery; (2) The thinking pattern of clinical practice has been focused on disease differentiation, and only complemented by syndrome differentiation; (3) The treatment has been concentrated on the disease instead of on the syndrome. Considering these problems, the author has put forward the thinking pattern of clinical research, that is "to differentiate diseases from syndromes and to differentiate syndromes from diseases". In this way, many new syndromes and diseases will be discovered with the improvement of disease and syndrome differentiations. These advances will provide rich resources for basic theoretical and pharmacal studies of TCM, and improve the common understanding of TCM in the world.
Nucleation Promoting Factors Regulate the Expression and Localization of Arp2/3 Complex during Meiosis of Mouse Oocytes

Abstract: The actin nucleation factor Arp2/3 complex is a main regulator of actin assembly and is involved in multiple processes like cell migration and adhesion, endocytosis, and the establishment of cell polarity in mitosis. Our previous work showed that the Arp2/3 complex was involved in the actin-mediated mammalian oocyte asymmetric division. However, the regulatory mechanisms and signaling pathway of Arp2/3 complex in meiosis is still unclear. In the present work, we identified that the nucleation promoting factors (NPFs) JMY and WAVE2 were necessary for the expression and localization of Arp2/3 complex in mouse oocytes. RNAi of both caused the degradation of actin cap intensity, indicating the roles of NPFs in the formation of actin cap. Moreover, JMY and WAVE2 RNAi decreased the expression of ARP2, a key component of Arp2/3 complex. However, knock down of Arp2/3 complex by Arpc2 and Arpc3 siRNA microinjection did not affect the expression and localization of JMY and WAVE2. Our results indicate that the NPFs, JMY and WAVE2, are upstream regulators of Arp2/3 complex in mammalian oocyte asymmetric division.

Abstract: In the crystal structure of the title compound, C14H10F2O, the dihedral angles between the benzene rings in the two crystallographically independent molecules are 46.9 (2) and 47.6 (2)°. The molecules are linked into dimers by C—H...F interactions and these dimers are further stacked into columns along the b axis by π–π interactions between the benzene rings [centroid–centroid distance = 3.8221 ; the dihedral angle between the planes of these rings is 4.87 (2)°]. In addition, C—F...π interactions also contribute to the crystal packing (C...centroid distance = 3.5919 ).

Abstract: The title compound, C14H6O7·C10H8N2, has been hydrothermally synthesized. Structural ananlysis indicates that the crystals are produced by cocrystallization of naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid 1,8-anhydride and 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy) molecules. The crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular O—H...N and C—H...O hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions [centroid–centroid distances = 3.5846 (9) ].

Abstract: A probiotic strain of native bacillus has been isolated from maricultural pond of sea cucumber in this study. By observing its colony morphology, sequence analysis of its 16s rDNA, and physiological and biochemical experiments, the strain was identified to be Bacillus thuringiensis, and was named XA-01. It can be used in developing microbial ecological agents for environmental remediation of mariculture.
Stress Corrosion Cracking and Blue Brittleness of Rotor Steels in High Temperature Aqueous Solutions

Abstract: The tensile behaviors of two bolt steels 20Cr12NiMoWV and 25Cr2MoV, and rotor steel 30Cr2Ni4MoV used in a nuclear power plant were studied at different temperatures up to 280 degreesC in air and aqueous solution. The results showed that blue brittleness occurred near 230 degreesC and 180 degreesC for steels 30Cr2Ni4MoV and 25Cr2MoV, respectively. No blue brittleness was found for the steel containing higher Cr content. Susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking.(SCC) for the steels in aqueous solution at the test temperatures was very low except at the blue brittleness temperature. At the blue brittleness temperatures, however, the susceptibility to SCC was very high.

Abstract: The threshold stress, sigma(c), for sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of seven pipeline steels and five other steels, the critical stress, Sc, for seven pipeline steels and two drill rod steels with various strengths and the susceptibility to SCC, I-RA or sigma(f)(SCC)/sigma(f), for four pipeline steels, two drill rod steels and five other steels were measured. The results showed that there are no definite relationships among sigma(c), S-C and I-RA or sigma(f)(SCC)/sigma(f).
Investigation on propagation process of electrically induced fatigue cracking using AFM

Abstract: Propagation process of electrically induced fatigue cracking in BaTiO3 single crystal has been studied using atomic force microscope (AFM). The results show that alternating electric field generates a random domain switching around indentation cracks instead of a cyclic domain switching and an arrest indentation crack can be re-initiated by applying either positive or negative alternating electric field.
Stress corrosion cracking and its anisotropy of a PZT ferroelectric ceramics

Abstract: Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of a PZT ferroelectric ceramics in various media, such as moist atmosphere, silicon oil, methanol, water and formamide, and its anisotropy have been investigated at constant load test using a single-edge notched tensile specimen. The results showed that SCC could occur in all media, and the threshold stress intensity factor of SCC in water and formamide, KISCC, revealed anisotropy. The KISCC for poling direction parallel to the crack plane, KISCC a was greater than that perpendicular to the crack plane, KISCC b similar to the anisotropy of fracture toughness KIC; however, the anisotropy factor of KISCC, which was KISCC a/KISCC b =1.8 (in formamide) and 2.1 (in water), was larger than that of KIC which is K IC a /K IC b =1.4. The stress-induced 90° domain switching causes the anisotropy of KIC and KIC, besides, the resistance of SCC also has anisotropy.
