On Frost’s Colorful Imagery with Profound Implication
Qian Chen
Theory and Practice in Language Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.4304/tpls.2.2.371-376
Abstract: Robert Frost prefers employing common imagery to help express profound ideas. This leads to the deceptive simpleness of his poetry. The understanding of the imagery is crucial to the understanding of his poetry. Through the analysis of the colorful and ordinary imagery world, the poet’s deep thoughts on nature and society is manifested: he finds nature both benevolent and violent; and facing the chaotic and disordered reality, poetry composition can provide a momentary escape for him and enable him to be courageous enough to treat the reality.
Cultural Differences in Chinese and English Address Terms
Qian Chen
Journal of Language Teaching and Research , 2010, DOI: 10.4304/jltr.1.6.898-900
Abstract: Chinese and English address terms vary in types and characteristics. Chinese address system is more complex with more terms and a wider scope of application. As a special part of language, address terms are closely related to culture. Through the comparison between the Chinese and English address terms, the social and cultural elements embodied in the difference of the two systems can be revealed. The cultural difference in value concept, sense of hierarchy and sense of equality, and the different attitude toward the role of family greatly influence the difference between Chinese and English address terms.

Hangxia Zhou, Qian Liu, Chen Cui
Communications and Network (CN) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/cn.2013.53B2096

A multi-class method is proposed based on Error Correcting Output Codes algorithm in order to get better performance of attack recognition in Wireless Sensor Networks. Aiming to enhance the accuracy of attack detection, the multi-class method is constructed with Hadamard matrix and two-class Support Vector Machines. In order to minimize the complexity of the algorithm, sparse coding method is applied in this paper. The comprehensive experimental results show that this modified multi-class method has better attack detection rate compared with other three coding algorithms, and its time efficiency is higher than Hadamard coding algorithm.

Engineering (ENG) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2014.65029

Through the analysis of the sliding failure form of soil mass under the bearing push-extend reamed of Push-extend Multi-under-reamed Pile, in the paper, the law of coulomb-Mohr is used to establish a stress function and the theory of the sliding line is used to establish Prandtl regional stress field, which determines the stress calculating mode of soil mass and provides a theoretical basis for a further study of this type of pile ultimate bearing capacity of soil mass.

Carbohydrate-Derived Organocatalysts for the Reduction of Imines with Trichlorosilane  [PDF]
Xin Ge, Chao Qian, Xinzhi Chen
Journal of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering (MSCE) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/msce.2015.36008

The backbone of D-glucosamine hydrochloride was fine-tuned and modified by protecting the hydroxyl groups. In order to reduce imines with trichlorosilane, the carbohydrate-derived organocatalysts were prepared and screened. Methyl-4,6-O-benzylidene-2-amino-2-deoxy-α-D-glucopyr anoside was found as the best catalyst. The reduction was proceeded under CHCl3 as solvent at 40?C, affording 68% - 94% yield.

An Application of Heterogeneous Bayesian Regression Models with Time Varying Coefficients to Explore the Relationship between Customer Satisfaction and Shareholder Value  [PDF]
Duncan K. H. Fong, Qian Chen, Zhe Chen, Rui Wang
Open Journal of Statistics (OJS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojs.2017.71004
Abstract: The authors propose new Bayesian models to obtain individual-level and time-varying regression coefficients in longitudinal data involving a single observation per response unit at each time period. An application to explore the association between customer satisfaction and shareholder value is included in the paper. The Bayesian models allow the flexibility of incorporating industry and firm factors in the context of the application to help explain variations of the regression coefficients. Results from the analysis indicate that the effect of customer satisfaction on shareholder value is not homogeneous over time. The proposed methodology provides a powerful tool to explore the relationship between two important business concepts.
The Anti-Proliferative Effect of 5-Fluorouracil on Tumor Is Highly Associated with the Renewal of Peripheral White Blood Cells  [PDF]

Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2015.67064
Abstract: The efficacy of chemotherapy is thought to be direct killing of tumor cells, but documented studies have been shown that immunity plays a role in its effectiveness. In a pilot study to observe the bone marrow suppression and regeneration in tumor bearing mice induced by single dose injection of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), we unexpectedly found that tumors grew fast as bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMC) and peripheral white blood cells (PWBC) were decreased quickly during myelosuppression meanwhile significantly slow as repopulating of BMC and PWBC during bone marrow regeneration after 5-FU treatment, no matter whether in low or high dose administration, but the higher the dose was, the lower of the nadir of BMC and PWBC were reached to, as well as the much more powerful duration and strength of the repopulated BMC and PWBC, suggested that the immunity might be a predominant drive in 5-FU chemotherapy. Due to the fact that BMC is the source of PWBC which is its final maturational and functional form, it could be proposed that the anti-proliferative effect of 5-FU on tumor is highly associated with the renewal of PWBC.
Effects of Runing RecipeⅡ on expressions of p53 and ras oncogene proteins and cell cycle of the transplanted Ca761 breast cancer in mice

Zhong Xi Yi Jie He Xue Bao , 2005,
Abstract: Objective: To explore the mechanisms of Runing RecipeⅡ (a recipe composed of traditional Chinese herbs) in inhibiting the growth of breast cancer by observing its effects on the expressions of p53 and ras oncogene proteins and cell cycle of the transplanted Ca761 breast cancer in mice. Methods: We established the breast cancer model by transplanting Ca761 cells in mice. The mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: normal saline control group, CTX-treated group, Runing RecipeⅡ-treated group, and Runing RecipeⅡand CTX-treated group, with 12 mice in each group. We detected the cell cycle of the cancer cells in the mice’s transplanted tumor with flow cytometry and measured the expressions of p53 and ras oncogene proteins in the transplanted tumor with immunohistochemical methods. Results: The percentages of tumor cells in S-phase of the Runing RecipeⅡ-treated group, CTX-treated group and Runing RecipeⅡand CTX-treated group were significantly lower than that of the normal saline control group respectively (P<0.05). The percentage of tumor cells in G0-G1 phase of the Runing RecipeⅡ-treated group was lower than that of the CTX-treated group (P<0.05), while the percentage of tumor cells in G2-M phase was higher than that of the CTX-treated group. The immunoreactive scores (IRSs) of p53 in the Runing RecipeⅡ-treated group and Runing RecipeⅡand CTX-treated group were significantly lower than that in the normal saline control group respectively (P<0.05). The effect of CTX on the expression of p53 was not significant. The IRSs of ras oncogene protein in the RecipeⅡ-treated group, CTX-treated group and Runing RecipeⅡand CTX-treated group were lower than that in the normal saline control group respectively (P<0.05). Conclusion: Runing RecipeⅡ can inhibit the growth of Ca761 breast cancer in mice by controlling the cell cycle of the transplanted tumor. This may be related to its effect on the gene expressions of p53 and ras in the tumor tissue.

Electronic Journal of Differential Equations , 2007,
Abstract: Using a fixed point theorem of strict-set-contraction, we some established the existence of positive periodic solutions for the neutral logistic difference equation, with multiple delays, $$ Delta x(n)=x(n)Big[ a(n) -sum_{i=1}^{p}a_{i}(n) x(n- au_{i}(n)) -sum_{j=1}^{q}c_{j}(n) Delta x(n-sigma_{j}(n))Big]. $$
Metric Learning across Heterogeneous Domains by Respectively Aligning Both Priors and Posteriors
Qiang Qian,Songcan Chen
Computer Science , 2012,
Abstract: In this paper, we attempts to learn a single metric across two heterogeneous domains where source domain is fully labeled and has many samples while target domain has only a few labeled samples but abundant unlabeled samples. To the best of our knowledge, this task is seldom touched. The proposed learning model has a simple underlying motivation: all the samples in both the source and the target domains are mapped into a common space, where both their priors P(sample)s and their posteriors P(label|sample)s are forced to be respectively aligned as much as possible. We show that the two mappings, from both the source domain and the target domain to the common space, can be reparameterized into a single positive semi-definite(PSD) matrix. Then we develop an efficient Bregman Projection algorithm to optimize the PDS matrix over which a LogDet function is used to regularize. Furthermore, we also show that this model can be easily kernelized and verify its effectiveness in crosslanguage retrieval task and cross-domain object recognition task.
