Machine-guns and a Competition for the best Revolutionary Project: The Trial of Eduard Limonov

Abstract: The article examines the trial of Eduard Limonov 2001–2003. The writer and founder of the radical National Bolshevik Party was charged with, besides other offenses, terrorism and instigating an uprising against the constitutional order of the Russian Federation. The text “Theory of a Second Russia,” falsely attributed to Limonov and brought forward against him by the prosecution as one of its main pieces of evidence, imaginatively devises an uprising of the Russian minority in Kazakhstan, and the building of a second Russia which subsequently attacks the first. Most likely that theory was originally destined for a “competition for the best revolutionary projects” in the party newspaper Limonka, to figure in a column clearly blurring the lines between literary and political writing. In presenting this whole issue to the reader in a detailed fashion, I also discuss pertinent notions of a more general nature, such as the “aestheticization of politics” and political myth.

Abstract: Pyrido[2′,1′:2,3]imidazo[4,5-c]isoquinolin-5(6H)-ones such as the title compound, C24H21N3O3, can be obtained in a few minutes in a microwave-assisted three-component reaction from 2-aminopyridines, isocyanides and 2-carboxybenzaldehydes. In the title compound, the pyrido[2′,1′:2,3]imidazo[4,5-c]isoquinolin-5(6H)-one ring system is almost planar (mean deviation 0.068 ). The dihedral angle between the benzyl ring and the pyrido[2′,1′:2,3]imidazo[4,5-c]isoquinolin-5(6H)-one ring system is 78.2°. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular C—H...O and C—H...N hydrogen bonds.
An Open Source Approach for Modern Teaching Methods: The Interactive TGUI System

Abstract: In order to facilitate teaching complex topics in an interactive way, the authors developed a computer-assisted teaching system, a graphical user interface named TGUI (Teaching Graphical User Interface). TGUI was introduced at the beginning of 2009 in the Austrian Journal of Statistics (Dinges and Templ 2009) as being an effective instrument to train and teach staff on mathematical and statistical topics. While the fundamental principles were retained, the current TGUI system has been undergone a complete redesign. The ultimate goal behind the reimplementation was to share the advantages of TGUI and provide teachers and people who need to hold training courses with a strong tool that can enrich their lectures with interactive features. The idea was to go a step beyond the current modular blended-learning systems (see, e.g., Da Rin 2003) or the related teaching techniques of classroom-voting (see, e.g., Cline 2006). In this paper the authors have attempted to exemplify basic idea and concept of TGUI by means of statistics seminars held at Statistics Austria. The powerful open source software R (R Development Core Team 2010a) is the backend for TGUI, which can therefore be used to process even complex statistical contents. However, with specifically created contents the interactive TGUI system can be used to support a wide range of courses and topics. The open source R packages TGUICore and TGUITeaching are freely available from the Comprehensive R Archive Network at http://CRAN.R-project.org/.
Consistency of GPS and strong-motion records: case study of Mw9.0 Tohoku-Oki 2011 earthquake

Abstract: GPS and strong-motion sensors are broadly used for the monitoring of structural health and Earth surface motions, focusing on response of structures, earthquake characterization and rupture modeling. Most studies have shown differences between the two systems at very long periods (e.g. >100sec). The aim of this study is the assessment of the compatibility of GPS and strong-motion records by comparing the consistency in the frequency domain and by comparing their respective displacement waveforms for several frequency bands. For this purpose, GPS and strong-motion records of 23 collocated sites of the Mw9.0 Tohoku 2011 earthquake were used to show that the consistency between the two datasets depends on the frequency of the excitation, the direction of the excitation signal and the distance from the excitation source.
Long-period surface motion of the multi-patch Mw9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake

Abstract: We show that it is possible to capture the oscillatory ground motion induced by the Tohoku-Oki event for periods ranging from 3 to 100s using Precise Point Positioning (PPP). We find that the ground motions of the sedimentary basins of Japan were large (respectively > 0.15m/s and >0.15m/s2 for velocity and acceleration) even for periods larger than 3s. We compare geodetic observables with a Ground Motion Prediction Equation (GMPE) designed for Japan seismicity and find that the Spectral Acceleration (SA) is well estimated for periods larger than 3s and distances ranging from 100 to 500km. At last, through the analysis of the displacement attenuation plots, we show that the 2011 Tohoku-Oki event is likely composed of multiple rupture patches as suggested before by time-reversal inversions of seismic data.

Abstract: The purpose of this letter is to present the corrected expressions for the four-pole transmission matrix for a duct with a linear temperature gradient and an exponential temperature profile, described in Sujith [1]. The corrected equations are used in the analyses of a duct that is driven by a piston at one end and a rigid termination at the other end and the gas has a linear and exponential temperature gradients. The acoustic pressure and particle velocity along the duct are calculated and the theoretical results are compared with predictions using finite element analysis.

Abstract:

In order to reduce the ulcerogenic effect of ibuprofen, its carboxylic group has been converted into 5-membered and 6-membered heterocyclic rings. Various 1,3,4-thiadaizo (y), imidazo [2,1-b] [1,3,4] thiadiazoles (1a-d), 1,3-oxazin-2-yl (2), quinazolin-2-yl (3, 4 and 5), hydrazine, pyrazole (6), pyrazone (7, 8) and oxadiazole (9, 12). Derivatives of ibuprofen were prepared by cyclization under various reaction conditions in a very good yield. The microbial inhibitory effect of the new agents has been assessed in vitro against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria activity. Compounds (4, 5, and 8) showed the highest antibacterial activities compared to other compounds and standard drugs. However, compound (1b) showed the lowest antibacterial activity compared to other compounds. All compounds have been characterized by IR, 1H NMR and C.H.N analysis.

Abstract: Rock samples of industrial raw materials that are used in the building, from the West of Saudi Arabia (Arabian Shield), have been investigated using X-ray diffraction to identify the mineral chemical composition. The concentrations of Al%, Bi, Pb, Th, U, and K in ppm were measured by atomic absorption analysis. The activity concentrations in Bq/kg dry weight of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were measured using gamma-ray spectrometry where the range and average were found to be (03.04 - 10.91) 07.90, (03.19 - 13.31) 09.14 and (95.59 - 361.52) 234.81 in Basalt, for Granite (33.81 - 89.13) 80.85, (28.42 - 112.77) 68.50 and (1260.13 - 1629.21) 1376.69, for Gold (00.78 - 11.84) 04.73, (01.48 - 4.69) 02.69 and (13.76 - 445.09) 197.58, for Andesite 05.72, 03.73 and 471.93, and for Marble 01.56, 01.38 and 10.15 respectively. Most results existing within the given values in building materials by UNSCEAR 1993 included Raeq (Bq/kg), D (nGy/h), Deff (mSv/y), Hex and Hin, which meant that it was safe for humans.

Abstract: Universal screening is a critical foundation for school-based prevention and early intervention. This study examined the technical adequacy of the SPF-7, an instrument designed to assist school personnel in the early identification of students at-risk for emotional and behavioral concerns. The SPF-7 differs from other measures used in identifying emotionally and behaviorally at-risk students, as the SPF-7 focuses on protective factors rather than risk factors. The results of this study suggest that the SPF-7 has adequate test-retest reliability and criterion validity, but limited inter-rater agreement. The SPF-7 is a potentially promising tool for identifying students in need of support within a multi-tiered system of increasingly intensive interventions.
Research on Signal of Field Monitor of 7220A Localizer Beacon Subsystem of ILS  [PDF]

Abstract: From the actual perspective of working principle of localizer beacon subsystem of Instrument Landing System (ILS), consideration of the distance information from localizer antenna to field monitor antenna and wide aperture effect of localizer antenna, broke through the limitation of signals synthesized only far-field (FF), established the near-field (NF) model. The three-dimensional mathematical model of localizer beacon was designed, and the signals at both near-field and far-field were analyzed qualitatively. At the environment of Antenna Fault as well as Antenna Distribution Unit (ADU) phase shifter simulation, the characteristics of near-field and far-field were also compared. The simulation results showed that the model met the requirement of theory of localizer beacon, and the gap between two models was so evident, which resulted from the broken geometric symmetry in NF area. The model could provide valuable theoretical basis for performance evaluation and maintenance of the ILS, and meanwhile, provide reference for the further analysis of localizer beacon.
