The usage of amount, quantity and body in a corpus of biology
Purificación Sánchez Hernández
Ibérica , 2002,
Abstract: Grammars and dictionaries usually offer relevant and accurate information to students of a second language. However, the meaning of a textual element is often dynamic and that information is not always based on real usage patterns. New occurrences on the object level in new contexts can introduce novel semantic potentials, so that existing interpretations may be superseded by new ones. Concordancing has been shown to be one of the most important tools to facilitate the understanding of the usage patterns of a language. In this paper we examine the differences between amount, quantity and body as terms expressing magnitude, sum and size in a corpus of Biology. According to some popular dictionaries and grammars, the terms amount and quantity have always been considered synonymous terms for expressing magnitude, size and sum. We demonstrate that, according to our records, they cannot be always used as synonymous terms since they have different patterns of usage. On the other hand there are other forms, such as body, that appear in our Corpus, implying magnitude, size and sum, that are not usually described as having such meanings in dictionaries.

Abstract: in this work we assume the level of education as an indicator of political elite's quality. our hypothesis is that legislators' education level in some of the latin american countries has not a positive impact on the characteristics of democracy. instead, under social and economic inequalities, a high level of education shows individual or collective privileges and, therefore, it does not have an effect on the general condition of social and political system.

Abstract: The lithium ionic conductingLa0.45Ce0.1Li0.27TiO3 has been synthesized by sol-gel method. This solid is the result of substitutional doping with Ce(IV) in La0.45Ce0.1Li0.27TiO3 compound. The aim of the replacement of La(III) by Ce(IV) is increase the number of vacancies in the structure and favors the ionic mobility. Structural characterization shows that the obtained material have the expected tetragonal P4/mmm perovskite structure. Chemical analysis shows that composition was homogeneus in all the sample. The bulk conductivity measured at room temperature is about the same as previously reported for its related lanthanum lithium titanate. However, the lower activation energy for ionic conduction encourages further searching for better conductors in this system.

DESARROLLO DE COMPETENCIAS EN EL PRáCTICUM CON MATERIALES Y ACTIVIDADES ONLINE

A pesar de todo, lo define como "the ability to make satisfactory and effective decisions in a specific situation" (p.80).

Abstract: This article shows the process taken to design and identify the psychometric properties of the evaluation instrument construct Diversity Attention as a context variable. For that, the starting point is a brief revision of different instruments used to collect information on diversity, not only cultural but also social, linguistic or on capacities. After that, and assuming a classification of the different theoretical approaches, a first instrument is made, committing ourselves to an inclusive approach. After that, its validation is made by experts and its pilot study is carried on. Reliability analysis of the instrument helps us to conclude that the questionnaire is reliable on collecting information regarding how schools face diversity attention.

Abstract: objectives: study the loss or reduction of the cellular adhesion mediated for e-cadherin in oral leukoplakias, oral squamous cell carcinomas and metastatic nodules. study the loss of continuity of the laminin and collagen iv expression in the epithelial basal membrane from the biological development of the oral leukoplakias and oral carcinomas. material and method: we have studied 124 samples of patient payees leukoplakias and oral carcinomas with diverse diagnosis that embrace from normal epithelium (13 samples), mild dysplasias (2), moderate dysplasias (12), "in situ" carcinomas (13), microinvasive carcinomas (11) oral squamous cell carcinomas (64 samples) and metastatic nodules (9). 7 blocks of tissue microarrays were built with needle of 2mm and was carried out a study by means of immunohistochemical technique for e-cadherin (clone 36, biogenex), laminin (078p, biogenex) and collagen iv (phm12, biogenex). results: in mild and moderate dysplasias the results present loss of e-cadherin, laminin, and collagen iv (20%) expression. "in situ" and microinvasive carcinomas, the results presented loss of e-cadherin expression (73%), and loss in laminin and collagen iv expression (57%). in the squamous cell carcinomas , we find e-cadherin underexpression (90%) and discontinuity in the basal membrane. (70%). all the metastatic nodules presented loss of e-cadherin expression and discontinuity in laminin and collagen iv expression. conclusions: the loss of e-cadherin expression is increased when increasing the dysplasia grade of lesions. the loss of continuity in the laminin and collagen iv expression follow a parallel evolution from dysplasias to metastatic nodules. the underexpression of the three markers has been significant in the evolution of the oral lesions.

Abstract: Despite the clinical success of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) therapy, toxicity is frequent. Therefore, it would be useful to identify predictors of adverse effects. In the last years, several studies have investigated the relationship between genetic variation and treatment-related toxicity. However, most of these studies are focused in coding regions. Nowadays, it is known that regions that do not codify proteins, such as microRNAs (miRNAs), may have an important regulatory function. MiRNAs can regulate the expression of genes affecting drug response. In fact, the expression of some of those miRNAs has been associated with drug response. Genetic variations affecting miRNAs can modify their function, which may lead to drug sensitivity. The aim of this study was to detect new toxicity markers in pediatric B-ALL, studying miRNA-related polymorphisms, which can affect miRNA levels and function. We analyzed 118 SNPs in pre-miRNAs and miRNA processing genes in association with toxicity in 152 pediatric B-ALL patients all treated with the same protocol (LAL/SHOP). Among the results found, we detected for the first time an association between rs639174 in DROSHA and vomits that remained statistically significant after FDR correction. DROSHA had been associated with alterations in miRNAs expression, which could affect genes involved in drug transport. This suggests that miRNA-related SNPs could be a useful tool for toxicity prediction in pediatric B-ALL.
