Abstract: Yttria-Stabilised Zirconia (YSZ) coatings were deposited on a T-22 boiler steel. NiCrAlY was used as bond coat and YSZ as top coat. Hot corrosion studies were conducted on uncoated as well as plasma spray coated specimens in air as well as salt (75 wt.% Na2SO4 + 25 wt.% NaCl) at 900°C under cyclic conditions. The thermogravimetric technique was used to establish kinetics of corrosion. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM/EDAX) techniques were used to analyse the corrosion products. This YSZ overlay coatings enhance resistance to corrosion significantly which can be attributed to formation of zirconium oxides (ZrO2) and yttrium oxide (Y2O3). This coating was more effective in salt environment and there is an extra phase of ZrS.

Abstract: Background: Coronary artery disease is highly prevalent in India with onset at a younger age. Coronary collateral circulation plays an important role in protecting myocardium from infarction, preserving myocardial contractility and reducing cardiovascular events. The objective of the present study is to assess the pattern of coronary collateral circulation in known cases of coronary artery disease with correlation to age, gender and degree of occlusion. Method: This is a retrospective study done on 200 preoperative angiograms in patients with coronary artery disease. Patients were classified according to age, gender and degree of obstruction in major vessels. Collateral vessels were graded according to the Rentrop classification. Patients with collaterals were further classified on the basis of intensity of collaterals into 3 groups: those with no collateralization (Grade 0), poor collateralization (Grade 1) and those with adequate collateralization (Grade 2 - 3). Results: Collateral development was seen in 175 (87.5%) angiograms. Collaterals were seen in 66% for left anterior descending (LAD), 44.5% for circumflex (LCx) and 70.5% for right coronary artery (RCA) block. Coronary collaterals between LAD and posterior descending artery (PDA) via ventricular septal branches were most common pathways. Adequate collaterals were seen in 53% males and 29.3% females (p < 0.001), 53.14% in patients of age > 50 years and in 32% in cases with age < 50 years (p = 0.014) and 54.8% cases with arterial obstruction > 90%. Conclusion: Collateral circulation between LAD and PDA via ventricular septal branches is the commonest pathway to develop. Although prevalence of LAD occlusion is higher but collaterals develop more for RCA occlusion. Adequate collaterals develop more frequently in males, cases above 50 years and in vessels with >90% obstruction.

Abstract: The oxidation behaviour of T-91 steel and T-22 steel in salt of 75wt.% Na2SO4+25wt.% NaCl has been studied under isothermal conditions at a temperature of 900°C in a cyclic manner. Oxidation kinetics was established for the T-91 steel and T-22 steel in salt at 900°C under cyclic conditions for 50 cycles by thermogravimetric technique. Each cycle consisted of 1 hour heating at 900°C followed by 20 min of cooling in air. Both the samples nearly followed the parabolic rate law of oxidation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDAX) techniques were used to characterise the oxide scales. T-91 steel was found to be more corrosion resistant than T-22 steel under salt oxidation.

Abstract: In this work, TiAlN and AlCrN coatings were deposited on Superfer 800H superalloy using Balzer’s rapid coating system (RCS) machine (make Oerlikon Balzers, Swiss) under a reactive nitrogen atmosphere. The corrosion resistance of the substrate, TiAlN and AlCrN coated samples in a 5 wt% NaCl solution was evaluated and compared by salt fog (spray) test for 24 hrs, 48 hrs and 72 hrs. The samples were monitored and analyzed by using weight loss measurement, XRD and SEM/EDAX techniques. There was no weight loss observed for coated as well as uncoated specimens in all test conditions.

Abstract: Polyurethane based anti-graffiti coatings have been developed by incorporating varying amounts of OH-functional Silicone modified polyacrylate. Optimization of Silicone polyacrylate concentration in neat PU was done by testing its performance for graffiti resistance. Tests which include static contact angle measurements with water and spray paint, visual inspection of stain removal and color change measurements were performed. It was observed that 5 wt % of Silicone polyacrylate in the neat PU showed 95% stain removability. These coatings showed excellent graffiti resistance but poor mechanical properties. Hence modification of these coatings was done by nano-particle incorporation. Nano-silica particle concentration was optimized for surface mechanical properties such as surface hardness, elastic modulus and scratch resistance. FEG-TEM revealed that nano-silica particles were uniformly distributed over the surface. 5 wt % nano-silica particle additions in PU-5 wt % silicone polyacrylate base showed superior mechanical properties than other concentrations. Color change measurements showed that nano-silica particle addition had no effect on its graffiti resistance. Hence PU-5 wt % silicone polyacrylate, 5 wt % nano-silica showed excellent graffiti resistance and mechanical properties.
