This study was conducted at the C.N.!. Tibaitatá in 1980, to determine the effect of divergent mass selection for ears per plant on internode pattern of two subpopulations derived from the synthetic Harinoso Mosquera I Sin.2. The results corresponded to the selection cycles from 12 to 20 of each subpopulation. Arando. mized complete block design with 22 treatments, 10 blocks was used. From each plot a random sample of ten plants were taken and the following characteristics were measured: number of internodes, interhode lenght and number of internodes above and below the upper ear. The internode patterns allowed to analize in a integral way, the changes in the characteristics considered: the plants of the prolific subpopulation were higher because they had more and longer internodes than the non-prolific population. The increase of the internode number ocurred below the upper ear. It was also observed that the internode patterns of the non prolific population, were similar to the original variety. Therefore, the response to mass selection to increase prolificacy, was accompanied with a collateral r

A Feedforward Controller to Regulate the Chemical Composition of Molten Steel in a Continuous Casting Tundish  [PDF]

Intelligent Control and Automation (ICA) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ica.2013.43029

A feedforward controller for the automatic regulation of chemical composition of molten steel in the tundish of a continuous casting machine is proposed in this work. The flow of molten steel inside the tundish is modeled as a distributed parameter system, and the resulting partial differential equation is transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations by means of the finite differences technique. From the above set and using a proper boundary condition, a feedforward control law is synthesized. No experimental tests are reported, however, the dynamic performance of the controller is illustrated by means of numerical simulations.

Abstract: in the last 30 years, the production of ethanol from sugar cane in brazil reached 17 million cubic meters and it is expected to achieve 35.7 million cubic meters by 2012-2013. this growth has taken place due to great technological support by means of production, imports, adaptations and internal transferences. an analysis of the different phases of this development, with the evolution of its technological parameters and the great competition of the sector, is presented in the article. nowadays, foresights state that the sector may keep evolving with continuous improvements, but sudden technological boosts are also possible through the development of technologies directed towards a better use of the residual biomass of sugar cane (which represents about two thirds of the total biomass). studies in progress indicate that the sugar cane contribution to energy supply may be superior and more diversified than the current one. they also affirm that this may happen together with bio-refinery development, which will result in products of higher aggregate values.

Contribution of graduate programs in plant breeding to the education of plant breeders in Brazil

Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology , 2012,
Abstract: The success of agribusiness in Brazil in recent decades is unquestionable. Although the country has always had favorable conditions for agriculture (land, water and climate), this success has only come about recently, due to scientific research, which has resulted in considerable increases in yield and in improvement of product quality, as well as making the occupation of new agricultural frontiers possible. A decisive factor for development of agriculture in the country was the creation of EMBRAPA in 1973, which, in a few years, led to considerable demand for researchers with training in graduate programs. Among them are plant breeders, who came to exercise their activity throughout the country and in all ecosystems. The training of plant breeders was only possible because, as from the middle of the 1960s, the country began a wide-ranging education program, with the creation of several graduate programs in genetics and plant breeding.

Abstract: This article, making use of discourse analysis, sough to cast an eye the use and impacts caused by the media in Brazil Foreign Policy Good Neighbor government of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President of the United States of America - USA from 1933 to 1945. Carring out a survey to identify the importance and applications of media and cultural instruments in Foreign Policy Good Neighbor, justified and finds its relevance to better use and extensive knowledge of various instruments of International Relations. The media communication and culture, not infrequently, are overlooked in the formulation of foreign policy of states, however, when used strategically, are able to act on the collective and nations, forging lines of influence in a given situation. First, the study sought to give an overview on the key of discourse analysis, using, primarily the studies of Michel Foucault. Later, there was a brief bibliography and history of primary and secondary sources, with a view to presenting the discursive production of the Foreign Policy Good Neighboor and its main guidelines for Latin America, especially to Brazil. The article sought, moreover, synthesize, in the third part of the text, the fundamental premises of the use of the media, essentially, advertising, radio and cinema in addition to its informative character and its entertainment function. Armed with this set of elements, the research brought verify the period in question, the relevance of the communication mechanisms for building values, understandings, ideals and identities. The study concluded, finally, that the cultural aspects, produced by the Foreign Policy Good Neighbor and sold to the other Latin American countries issued lifestyles, concepts, visions and it was one of the first exports of an idealized versions of American Way of Life. La crisis Colombiana y Peru.

Colombia Internacional , 2004,
Abstract: This article analyzes Peruvian foreign and security policies regarding the Colombian conflict in the context of the discourses on securitization emerging in the region in the late twentieth century. Specifically, it compares the governments of Fujimori and Toledo to argue that, in spite of their differences in political genealogy (authoritarian and democratic, respectively), both governments have responded to the Colombian crisis in similar ways by following U.S. security discourses regarding the "war on drugs" and the "global war on terrorism". However, while Fujimori attempted to mobilize the Colombian conflict as part of his strategy to remain in power for an unconstitutional third term, Toledo has used it to assure the survival of his constitutional mandate.
