Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492004000500005
Abstract: purpose: to evaluate visual acuity improvement with levodopa/benzerazide associated with partial occlusion and followed by total occlusion therapy in patients with amblyopia considered irreversible. methods: a 9-week experimental open study was performed involving 37 patients, between 7 and 40 years old, with strabismic and/or anisometropic amblyopia. all patients were treated with levodopa (0.70 mg/kg/day) and 25% benzerazide associated with 4-hour/day occlusion of the dominant eye for 5 weeks. in the last 4 weeks, only the total occlusion (24 h) of the dominant eye was performed. visual acuity was measured by the early treatment diabetic retinopathy (etdr) table with the logarithmic minimum angle of resolution (logmar) scale before the beginning of the treatment and after 1, 3, 5 and 9 weeks of treatment. adhesions to occlusion therapy and to drug intake were checked through a written questionnaire and capsule counting. adverse effects were evaluated by clinical examination and questionnaire. results: after 9 weeks of treatment visual acuity improved from 0.58 ± 0.16 to 0.23 ± 0.16 logmar (4 lines of improvement in the etdr table). conclusion: levodopa dose of 0.70 mg/kg/day is well tolerated and, when associated with occlusion therapy, significantly improves visual acuity in patients with amblyopia considered irreversible.
Compara??o do teste modificado de fixa??o preferencial com o convencional em pacientes com estrabismo

Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492012000200002
Abstract: purpose: to compare the accuracy of the fixation preference test performed with the patient touching and looking at the fixation target, to the conventional method test done with the patient only looking at it. methods: a pilot transversal and prospective study was done with 40 strabismic patients with deviations greater than 10 prism diopters, from 7 to 30 years old. results: the modified test had a sensitivity of 93% (ic 95%=68.53 - 98.73%) and specificity of 77% (ic 95%=57.95 - 88.97%); while the conventional test had a sensitivity of 93% (ic 95%=68.53 - 98.73%) and a specificity of 46% (ic 95%=28.76 - 64.54%). conclusions: our results suggest that the modification of the fixation preference test by asking the patient to touch the fixation target might reduce the number of false positive results of the test.

Abstract: financial theory and international research show us many reasons for different capital structure decisions. however, very little has been said so far about the relationship between companies' capital structure and their governance. using a sample of bovespa trading companies between 1995 and 2000, this study reveals significant statistic influence of governance on capital structure decisions together with other variables like profitability, size, year and industry.
Bovespa New Markets Adoption - Novo Mercado, Nível 1 and Nível 2, Determinants and Consequences

Revista Brasileira de Finan?as , 2009,
Abstract: This paper studies the determinants and consequences of rms that adopted the Brazilian new stock exchanges – Novo Mercado, Nível 1 and Nível 2. Since 2001 more than 61 companies chose to be traded in these exchanges with the intention to raise their levels of disclosure and corporate governance. In terms of determinants, rms that adopted the new markets are larger, more pro table, more likely to be traded as ADRs and have more dispersed ownership. As for the consequences, shares of rms that adopted the new markets are more liquid than shares of rms traded in the regular exchange (BOVESPA). In addition, rms that adopted the Nível 2 and the Novo Mercado – markets with stricter disclosure and governance requirements - also experienced an increase in liquidity when compared to their liquidity prior to the adoption. Efeitos da asfixia perinatal sobre os horm?nios tireoidianos
Pereira, Denise N.;Procianoy, Renato S.;
Jornal de Pediatria , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0021-75572001000300007
Abstract: objective: to verify the effect of perinatal asphyxia on thyroid hormone levels in term newborn infants. methods: we carried out a case-control study with 17 term and asphyxiated (a) and 17 term and control (n) newborn infants at the hospital de clínicas de porto alegre. patients were paired according to color of skin, sex, type of delivery, gestational age, and weight at birth. we collected umbilical cord plasma t4, t3, free t4, reverse t3, and tsh after 18 to 24 hours of life and from asphyxiated and control newborn infants. results: there were no differences in thyroid hormones of cord blood, with the exception of reverse t3, which was higher in a than in controls [median (25th-75th percentile): a= 2(1.4-2); n= 1.41 (1.13-1.92); p=0.037)]. thyroid hormone levels were lower in a than in controls on samples collected within 18-24 hours after birth, except for reverse t3, which was similar in both groups [average ± sd: t4 a= 9.79 ± 2.59; n=14.68 ± 3.05; p<0.001; median t3 a= 40.83 (37.4-80.4); n= 164 (56.96-222.5); p=0.003; average ± sd: free t4 a=1.85 ± 0.92; n= 2.8 ± 0.74; p=0.004; median: reverse t3 a=1.54 (1.16-1.91); n=1.31(0.87-2); p=0.507; tsh a=9.1 (6.34-12.95); n=14.5(12.9-17.85); p=0.008]. conclusions: our data suggest that lower t4, free t4, and t3 levels are secondary to lower tsh levels in asphyxiated newborns; also, peripheral metabolism of t4 in asphyxiated infants can be altered due to low t3 and normal reverse t3 levels.
Impacto da indexa??o no SciELO e MEDLINE sobre as submiss?es ao Jornal de Pediatria

Jornal de Pediatria , 2005, DOI: 10.2223/JPED.1414
Abstract: objective: to evaluate the impact of scielo and medline indexing on the number of articles submitted to jornal de pediatria. methods: analysis of total article submission, submission of articles from foreign countries and acceptance figures in the following periods: stage i - pre-website (jan 2000-mar 2001); stage ii - website (apr 2001-jul 2002); stage iii - scielo (aug 2002-aug 2003); stage iv - medline (sep 2003-dec 2004). results: there was a significant trend toward linear increase in the number of submissions along the study period (p = 0.009). the number of manuscripts submitted in stages i through iv was 184, 240, 297, and 482, respectively. the number of submissions was similar in stages i and ii (p = 0.148), but statistically higher in stage iii (p < 0.001 vs. stage i and p = 0.006 vs. stage ii) and stage iv (p < 0.001 vs. stages i and ii, and p < 0.05 vs. stage iii). the rate of article acceptance decreased during the study period. the number of original articles published has been stable since the 2001 march/april issue (n = 10), when the journal reached a printed page limit, leading to stricter judgment criteria and a relative decrease in acceptance rate. the number of foreign submissions in stages i through iv was 1, 2, zero and 17, respectively, with p < 0.001 for the comparison of stage iv with previous stages. conclusions:scielo indexing was associated with an increase in brazilian manuscript submissions to jornal de pediatria, whereas medline indexing led to an increase in both brazilian and foreign submissions.
